I synthesize the conclusions of various studies prompted by the 2004 Haitian bicentennial in order to challenge the claims that nineteenth- century Haitian poems are banal parodies of French texts and simple preludes to twentieth- Copyright © by Amy Reinsel 2008 century Haiti literature. I argue that imitation becomes an impossible label with which to understand the complexities of Haitian poetry and national sentiment. Considering Haiti’s ambiguous relationship to modernity and the clairvoyance with which Haitian poets expressed national concerns, Haitian poetry constitutes a deliberate practice in the construction, legitimization and expression of national identity. In each of the three chapters I rely on historical context in order to situate the poetry and examine it through textual analysis. I explore in an initial chapter how political changes in Haiti in the 1820s, along with recognition of independence from France, coincided with the subsequent birth of Haitian Romanticism in the 1830s. The poetry of Coriolan Ardouin and Ignace Nau documents the development of poetic subjectivity and the inaugurating of iii national history which make this a pivotal period in Haitian poetry. A second chapter focuses on Haiti’s most prolific nineteenth-century poet, Oswald Durand, whose collection Rires et Pleurs includes poetry from the 1860s through the 1880s. Haitian theories of racial equality are expressed in Durand’s corpus and set within the thematic and aesthetic norms of French Romanticism, but the effort to inscribe a national and racial specificity enriches as much as it complicates his poetic project. In the final chapter, I document the shift that occurs for the last Haitian Romantic poet, Massillon Coicou. In his 1892 collection Poésies Nationales, the confident project of asserting national identity gives way to the sense of national failure due to an increasingly triumphant imperialism and internal corruption. On the eve of the Haitian centennial, Coicou’s verse demonstrates the ways in which political crisis in Haiti are inherently tied to the notion of poetry. You have permanently transformed for me the experience of friendship. vii 1.0 INTRODUCTION The events of January 1, 2004, marking the bicentennial of Haiti’s independence from France and the founding of the world’s first black republic, occasioned celebration but also protest against the government of then Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. When unrest turned to armed struggle just two months later, the echoes of Haiti’s historic revolution, the result of the only successful slave revolt in history, combined with its subsequent legacy of political instability and relentless poverty to capture media attention around the world. Reflecting on the intense media coverage of those months, Martin Munro and Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw state: Suddenly, too, everyone has an opinion on Haiti. Curiously, these opinions are themselves echoes of the past, shaped as they are around long-standing proprietary misinterpretations of just what Haiti “represents.” 1 For many observers, they note, these opinions translated into recycled fears of Haitian violence, albeit at a safer distance via the television screen than two hundred years before. Spain landed on the island on 5 "L'union fait la force" (French) [2] December 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher "Inite se fòs" (Haitian Creole) Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus "Union makes strength" initially landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found Anthem: La Dessalinienne (French) [13] India or China. On Christmas Day 1492, Columbus' Desalinyèn (Haitian Creole) flagship the Santa Maria ran aground north of what is "The Dessalines Song" 0:00 MENU now Limonade.[14][15][16][17] As a consequence, Columbus ordered his men to salvage what they could from the ship, and he created the first European settlement in the Americas, naming it La Navidad after the day the ship was destroyed.

    Panel: Labour Migration and the Caribbean Literary Imagination The Vzejo and the Congo: The Haitian Migrant Cane Worker in some Haitian fictions Marie-Jose N'Zengou-Tayo (Dr.) Lecturer Department of Modern Languages & Literatures U.W.I.,Mona Campus Caribbean Studies Association Annual Conference St. Marteen, Maho Beach Resort May 27-June 2, 2001 Until the turn of the twentieth century, labour migration was something unknown to Haitians. The experience of 'migration' was known only to the upper class through the experience of 'exile' at worst or at best, the formative journey abroad (Lahens, 1990). This experience had shaped the narrative of travel in Haitian literature in a way that could not account for the peasant migration abroad. In this chapter, I would like to analyse the literary representation of the sugar cane workers by Haitian novelists against the historical background of this migration. Three major events surrounding this migration contributed to shape what I will call the Haitian 'sugar cane narrative.' Though most historians present Haitian labour migration as the consequence of the American Occupation of Haiti (1915), some documents indicate an earlier date (end of the nineteenth century, Laville, 1933) as mentioned in our introduction. Because the prevailing ideology always wanted to prevent the Haitian peasants from leaving the countryside, their migration toward a foreign country was considered a disaster and a tragedy. The circumstances leading to this migration, i.e., the policies of the American Occupation Authorities, offered a propitious ground to the Haitian intellectuals to express their nationalism and resistance to the occupants. After the Occupation ended another tragic event, the slaughter of the sugar cane workers ordered in October 1937 by the Dominican dictator, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (1 930-61), marked deeply the Haitian imagination and gave its final shape to the narrative of Haitian sugar cane migration as well as contributing to the criticism of the post-Occupation governments (Vincent, 1934-1940; Lescot, 1940- 1946).

    HAITI UNBOUND A SPIRALIST CHALLENGE TO THE POSTCOLONIAL CANON H Both politically and in the fields of art and literature, Haiti has long been relegated to the margins of the so-called ‘New World’. Marked by exceptionalism, the voices of some of its AITI most important writers have consequently been muted by the geopolitical realities of the nation’s fraught history. In Haiti Unbound, Kaiama L. Glover offers a close look at the works of three such writers: the Haitian Spiralists Frankétienne, Jean-Claude Fignolé, and René Philoctète. While Spiralism has been acknowledged by scholars and regional writer- intellectuals alike as a crucial contribution to the French-speaking Caribbean literary tradition, the Spiralist ethic-aesthetic has not yet been given the sustained attention of a full-length U study. Glover’s book represents the first effort in any language to consider the works of the three Spiralist authors both individually and collectively, and so fills an astonishingly empty NBO place in the assessment of postcolonial Caribbean aesthetics. Touching on the role and destiny of Haiti in the Americas, Haiti Unbound engages with long- standing issues of imperialism and resistance culture in the transatlantic world. Glover’s timely project emphatically articulates Haiti’s regional and global centrality, combining vital ‘big picture’ reflections on the field of postcolonial studies with elegant analyses of the U philosophical perspective and creative practice of a distinctively Haitian literary phenomenon. Most importantly, perhaps, the book advocates for the inclusion of three largely unrecognized ND voices in the disturbingly fixed roster of writer-intellectuals who have thus far interested theorists of postcolonial (francophone) literature.

This word, which connotes both connection and disconnection, accurate- ly describes your condition as a Haitian American[, d]iscon- nected from the physical landscape of the homeland. You get so you can jump between worlds with the same ease that you slide on your nightgown every evening. (Hyppolite 7–11) Edwidge Danticat’s The Dew Breaker (2004) and Myriam Chancy’s The Spirit of Haiti (2003) both confront and are formally shaped to reflect the condition of “dyaspora.” The Haitian transnational community, which spans Caribbean islands (such as Cuba and the Bahamas), the United States, Canada, and France, is designated by the term “dyaspora.” Haitians within this community retain strong links to Haiti not only emotionally but often through familial and financial obligations (Pégram 127).1 “Dyaspora,” however, whilst identifying dispersal, also indicates alienation as it functions as a disparaging label to designate outsiders (Danticat, Butterfly xiv). Both writers are “dyaspora” in this double sense. But how has this inflected the re-evaluations of notions of belonging and identity in their texts? Haitian American writer Edwidge Danticat lived in Haiti for twelve years before moving to the United States to join her parents in New York.     HAITI ---AN UPDATE TO ITS ADMINISTRATIVE/POSTAL ORGANIZATION By Wally Deltoro In 2007, I came across an interesting website devoted to information concerning the administrative divisions of the countries of the world. My curiosity led me to the section pertaining to HAITI. The country section contained much information that directly or indirectly is pertinent to the knowledge we as collectors of Haiti philately should be familiar with. Specifically several pieces of information were of philatelic interest: 1- Haiti is no longer divided into 9 departments but rather 10 departments 2- The new department, NIPPES, was created in 2003 3- A listing of all of Haiti’s Arrondissements was provided that included the first 2 digits of the postal code. Overall, the information provided I found it to be interesting and useful. It certainly would be for those of us interested in town cancellations. Thus, in my desire to share it with our membership, I requested and obtained approval to publish information from the Haiti pages from the producer of the web site, Mr. Gwillim Law from Chapel Hill, NC, USA. His web site, Administrative Divisions of Countries ("Statoids") (http://www.statoids.com), provides similar information on all countries of the world. *** The Postal Codes of Haiti Haiti uses four-digit postal codes, always prefixed with "HT". The first digit represents the department; the first two, the arrondissement; the first three, the commune. The Departments of Haiti The eastern half of the Grand' Anse department was evidently split off to form Nippes department. The capital is Miragoâne. The electoral decree of 2005-02-03 states that the department of Nippes was created by a law of 2003-09-04.

McFarlane’s essay “The Black Hole of Trauma” resonate throughout all post-colonial nations. The histories of these communities recount the experiences of living under imperialism as well as the chaotic aftermath of having been a colonized nation. These stories are told, not just in the history, but also in the literature that reflects such communities. The stories from such countries tell of the blood stained history and the embedded colonial trauma that exists in the lives of individuals and the collective. Post-colonial nations often experience rupture due to their traumatic beginnings. The populations within such nations suffer from a trauma in which the individual and collective identities of their people are shattered and replaced with an imposed identity from an outside imperial power. Throughout colonization the people are told that their native identities are false and they must rediscover themselves through the framework they have been given.
