In his novel, Pramoedya organized a selection of historical facts and filled the gaps with stories to construct a sense of nation inside his characters. Linking the subjective experience of a man and the objective history of a nation, this historical novel reflects the condition of early twentieth century colonial Indonesia during the conception of nation and the start of national awakening period. The author coded the novel based on the character‘s idea of nation and connected it with the concept of truths in order to answer the research question. This paper concludes that Pramoedya created an idea of nation through experiences of the character. It also became apparent that Footsteps‘ conception of nation stresses the use of Malay as a national language, Islam as a uniting identity, and anti-colonialism.     116 Why you should read ‘This Earth of Mankind’* Max LANE IN JANUARY 2014 JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER’S FILM on Indonesia, The Act of Killing, was nominated for an Academy Award, reflecting its penetration into mainstream film watching. Many people will be introduced to Indonesia by this vivid study of the country’s ruling lumpen elite. Another, very different, introduction to Indonesia might be reading Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s historical novel Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind). The English language edition of This Earth of Mankind was published by Penguin in 1983. The sequels to this novel, Child of All Nations, Footsteps and House of Glass, were published over the following several years by Penguin in Australia and the United Kingdom. They were launched into the United States by William Morrow, Hyperion and Penguin in the 1990s. As their translator, I am very pleased to see that they are still in print 30 years later, having had many reprints. The four novels are likely to appear soon as eBooks, Penguin USA having bought the eBook rights. They appear already to be advertised as eBooks for Kindle on Amazon.com. Pramoedya’s work has, on the whole, met with critical acclaim in the West, in particular the United States. The publication of other translations followed, such as Silent Songs of a Mute, Fugitive, Girl from the Coast and collections of short stories. In 1992 the New York Times reviewer wrote: “Now comes a book of far greater scope and depth from independent Indonesia’s greatest but still most controversial fiction writer, whose career spans more than 40 years.

A prolific author, Pramoedya has written short fiction, novels, histories, and social and cultural commentary about his native land. He is frequently mentioned as a leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Pramoedya’s perennial candidacy for this award is almost certainly based on his epic tetralogy about the birth of Indonesian nationalism, the Buru quartet. In these novels, which tell the story of Raden Mas Minke, a native journalist and founding member of several political and social organizations in the Indies, Pramoedya draws a vivid picture of the colonial period: approximately 1900-1915.

Based on traditional notions of womanhood, these duties were used by the Indonesian State to restrict women's activities to the private sphere, that is, the family and domesticity. Linked with the Five Duties was kodrat wanita (women's destiny), an unofficial code of conduct, loosely based on biological determinism. Kodrat wanita became a benchmark by which women were measured during this period, and to a large extent this code is still valid today. In this thesis, I have analyzed female characters in Indonesian literature with specific identities that are on the periphery of this dominant discourse.

In order to construct ideology in the novel, Eagleton’s theory of six ideological features is employed as the tool to analyze the text. This study finds that there are two dominant class ideologies which are constructed in the novel, which are capitalism and feudalism. This study also finds that the characters are attributed with five ideological features, which are legitimation, rationalization, action-oriented, universalization, and naturalization to maintain the domination and advantages of the dominant classes and their ideologies.
