Post-Colonial Study of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s This Earth of Mankind: Oppressed Thought and Suppressed Voice of a Writer. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University. This Earth of Mankind by Pramoedya Ananta Toer is one of the greatest novels of its time, and like other great novels such as Romeo and Juliet, it is controversial. Written in post-independence era and during Pramoedya’s exile in Buru Island, the novel has gained international attention, despite being blasted by the nation’s majority on its release. This research answers one research problem which is how the existing external factors during the time Pramoedya wrote this novel affected the outcome. It was to verify a pre-conceived hypothesis that the novel is a reflection directed to the oppressing government at the time. This research employed a biographical research as proposed by Rohrberger and Woods (1976), with a touch of post-colonialism. It also made reference to an interview between Penguin Publishing House and Pramoedya Ananta Toer as an insight to how Pramoedya considered his own novel. Based on the result, the writer verified that This Earth of Mankind is indeed a reflection directed to the government at the time - a post-colonial administration that was still thick with colonial oppressing nature. This research also highlighted Pramoedya’s purpose of writing, in which he cited that he wrote for the greater good. Post-Colonial Study of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s This Earth of Mankind: Oppressed Thought and Suppressed Voice of a Writer. Yogyakarta: English Language Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University. It highlights Pram’s work in This Earth of Mankind, including the theme and storyline, and the socio-political tension during the time Pram wrote the story. A. Background This Earth of Mankind is an acclaimed Indonesian novel written by one of Indonesian literature legends, Pramoedya Ananta Toer. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with introduction. This chapter is divided into eight parts, namely, background of the study, literature review, problem statement, limitation of the study, objectives of the study, benefits of the study, research method and research paper organization. A. Background of the Study Human beings are born free and equal. Equal means has the same right, status or advantages to another. To live happily in this world, equality is important for human being. Equality refers to the state of being equal in opportunities, status or right. It may also refer to the condition of being equal in amount or number or it may be a symbolic expression of the fact that two quantities in an equation are equal. According to Anderson (in Mandell, 1995: 5), “In Principle, every person is to be given equal opportunities and civil rights, in which every person should be allowed to exercise freedom of choice, unfettered by either public opinion or law.” Equality basically means access or provision of equal opportunities, where individuals are protected from being discriminated against. Discrimination in equality can occur in race, sex, health, religion, family structure, age, politics, disability, culture, sexual orientation or in terms of believes. Equality refers to the state of being equal in opportunities, status or right. It may also refer to the condition of being equal in amount or number or 1 2 it may be a symbolic expression of the fact that two quantities in an equation are equal. Christiano (2008: 13) says that once equality is properly understood it can be shown to be the basis of a constitutional order in which each person has an equal say over the world she shares with others and which respects fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.

116 Why you should read ‘This Earth of Mankind’* Max LANE IN JANUARY 2014 JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER’S FILM on Indonesia, The Act of Killing, was nominated for an Academy Award, reflecting its penetration into mainstream film watching. Many people will be introduced to Indonesia by this vivid study of the country’s ruling lumpen elite. Another, very different, introduction to Indonesia might be reading Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s historical novel Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind). The English language edition of This Earth of Mankind was published by Penguin in 1983. The sequels to this novel, Child of All Nations, Footsteps and House of Glass, were published over the following several years by Penguin in Australia and the United Kingdom. They were launched into the United States by William Morrow, Hyperion and Penguin in the 1990s. As their translator, I am very pleased to see that they are still in print 30 years later, having had many reprints. The four novels are likely to appear soon as eBooks, Penguin USA having bought the eBook rights. They appear already to be advertised as eBooks for Kindle on Amazon.com. Pramoedya’s work has, on the whole, met with critical acclaim in the West, in particular the United States. The publication of other translations followed, such as Silent Songs of a Mute, Fugitive, Girl from the Coast and collections of short stories. In 1992 the New York Times reviewer wrote: “Now comes a book of far greater scope and depth from independent Indonesia’s greatest but still most controversial fiction writer, whose career spans more than 40 years.

A prolific author, Pramoedya has written short fiction, novels, histories, and social and cultural commentary about his native land. He is frequently mentioned as a leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Pramoedya’s perennial candidacy for this award is almost certainly based on his epic tetralogy about the birth of Indonesian nationalism, the Buru quartet. In these novels, which tell the story of Raden Mas Minke, a native journalist and founding member of several political and social organizations in the Indies, Pramoedya draws a vivid picture of the colonial period: approximately 1900-1915.

Teeuw, Modern Indonesian Literature (The Hague: Nijhoff, 1967)] PERBURUAN 1950 AND KELUARCA GERILYA 1950* Pramoedya Ananta Toer Translated by Benedict Anderson I've been asked: what is the creative process for me, as a writer? This is not an easy question to answer. Whether "formulated" or not, the creative process is always a very private and personal experience. Each writer will have his own ex perience, again whether "formulated" or not. I've been asked to detail the creative process which produced the novels Perburuan [The Fugitive] and Keluarga Gerilya [Th e Guerrilla Family]. Very well. I'll answer— even though there's no real need for other people to know what goes on in my private kitchen. My willingness to respond in this instance is based purely on the public's right to some comparisons . to limit undue onesidedness. 1948. I was 23 at the time— a pemuda who believed wholeheartedly in the nobil ity of work— any kind of work— who felt he could accomplish^ anything, and who dreamed of scraping the sky and scooping the belly of the earth: a pemuda who had only just begun his career as a writer, publicist, and reporter. As it turned out, all of this was nullified by thick prison walls. My life was regulated by a schedule determined by authorities propped up by rifles and bayonets. Forced labor outside the jail, four days a week, and getting cents for a full day's labor. Not a glimmer of light yet as to when the war of words and arms between the Re public and the Dutch would end.

Based on traditional notions of womanhood, these duties were used by the Indonesian State to restrict women's activities to the private sphere, that is, the family and domesticity. Linked with the Five Duties was kodrat wanita (women's destiny), an unofficial code of conduct, loosely based on biological determinism. Kodrat wanita became a benchmark by which women were measured during this period, and to a large extent this code is still valid today. In this thesis, I have analyzed female characters in Indonesian literature with specific identities that are on the periphery of this dominant discourse.

This undergraduate study analyses the motivation changing in the character of Nyai Ontosoroh in the novel This Earth of Mankind (Bumi Manusia) written by a famous Indonesian author named Pramoedya Ananta Toer. Therefore, there are two problems discussed in this study. The first one is how Nyai Ontosoroh as one of the main characters is described in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s This Earth of Mankind. The second one is to find out the reasons of Nyai Ontosoroh’s motivation changing for breaking her expected roles as a Dutch concubine in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s This Earth of Mankind.

A CRISIS OF PERSONALITY: Working Through Problems of Memory, Authenticity and Modernity in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Buru Tetralogy Daan de Kruijf Quest Summer Fellowship Program 2018 Supervisor: Dr. André Lambelet 17 August 2018 2 A Crisis of Personality A Note on Spelling and Translation This essay concerns an episode in modern Indonesian and Dutch history, and requires as such some careful thought about the implications of language. I have consulted sources written in languages other than Dutch, all of which I have translated personally and included, in the original, in the footnotes. These translations are imperfect and necessarily do some harm to the original. I ask the reader to indulge my renditions with patience and magnanimity. I have also consulted numerous translations, most notably Max Lane’s rendition of the Boeroe tetralogy and Willem Samuels (highly edited) version of Nyanyi Sunyi (The Mute’s Soliloquy). Given the significance of bahasa Indonesia to the formation of the Indonesian nation, the mediation of these works by their translators renders them in a fundamentally different way. The works I analyze, however, are the translations; I refer to them as such by their English names. Christopher GoGwilt has discussed the implications of translating Pramoedya’s work into English in a thoughtful essay, to which I direct the reader’s attention.1 In this essay, I have tried to preserve the original spelling of those words that have no English translation, or carry special significance in their original context: the ‘u’ (as in ‘blue’) in bahasa Indonesia and Dutch is written as ‘oe’, so that ‘Buru’ becomes ‘Boeroe’ and ‘Pramudya’ becomes ‘Pramoedya’.

In his novel, Pramoedya organized a selection of historical facts and filled the gaps with stories to construct a sense of nation inside his characters. Linking the subjective experience of a man and the objective history of a nation, this historical novel reflects the condition of early twentieth century colonial Indonesia during the conception of nation and the start of national awakening period. The author coded the novel based on the character‘s idea of nation and connected it with the concept of truths in order to answer the research question. This paper concludes that Pramoedya created an idea of nation through experiences of the character. It also became apparent that Footsteps‘ conception of nation stresses the use of Malay as a national language, Islam as a uniting identity, and anti-colonialism.
