Minke is a native youth, purebred Javanese. While Annelies is a mixed-Dutch girl, the daughter of a nyai mistressThis Earth of Mankind Ontosoroh. Minke's father, who has just been appointed as regent, is always against Minke's closeness to the Nyai's family, because a Nyai's position at the time is seen to be as low as pet animals. But this one nyai, Nyai Ontosoroh, Annelies' mother, is different. Minke admires all of her thoughts and struggles against the arrogance of colonial hegemony. To Minke, Nyai Ontosoroh is the reflection of modernization, which at the time is just beginning to rise. When the arrogance of colonial law tries to wrench Annelies from Minke's side, Nyai Ontosoroh is also the one who urges Minke to keep going and shout the word, "Fight! In general, the script is strong, it can keep the audience watch up to 3 hours. Acting wise, the connection between Iqbaal and Ine is extraordinary; Kelly Tandiono's cameoship is nice, but Christian Sugiono's is a waste. Minke faces a complex and dangerous world when he meets Nyai Ontosoroh, a njai or concubine of a Dutch man. In that period, it was common for women to become the concubines of Dutch men living in the East Indies. They were considered to have low morals because of their status as concubines, even if, as in Nyai Ontosoro's case, they had no choice in the matter. Their children had uncertain legal status - either considered illegitimate "natives" with a corresponding lack of legal rights, unless legally acknowledged by their father, in which case they were considered "Indos", and their mother lost all rights over them in favor of the father. As a concubine, Nyai Ontosoro suffers because of her low status and lack of rights, but, significantly, is aware of the injustice of her suffering and believes education is the route by This Earth of Mankind her basic humanity can be acknowledged. She believes that learning is the key to opposing indignity, stupidity, and poverty.     116 Why you should read ‘This Earth of Mankind’* Max LANE IN JANUARY 2014 JOSHUA OPPENHEIMER’S FILM on Indonesia, The Act of Killing, was nominated for an Academy Award, reflecting its penetration into mainstream film watching. Many people will be introduced to Indonesia by this vivid study of the country’s ruling lumpen elite. Another, very different, introduction to Indonesia might be reading Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s historical novel Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind). The English language edition of This Earth of Mankind was published by Penguin in 1983. The sequels to this novel, Child of All Nations, Footsteps and House of Glass, were published over the following several years by Penguin in Australia and the United Kingdom. They were launched into the United States by William Morrow, Hyperion and Penguin in the 1990s. As their translator, I am very pleased to see that they are still in print 30 years later, having had many reprints. The four novels are likely to appear soon as eBooks, Penguin USA having bought the eBook rights. They appear already to be advertised as eBooks for Kindle on Amazon.com. Pramoedya’s work has, on the whole, met with critical acclaim in the West, in particular the United States. The publication of other translations followed, such as Silent Songs of a Mute, Fugitive, Girl from the Coast and collections of short stories. In 1992 the New York Times reviewer wrote: “Now comes a book of far greater scope and depth from independent Indonesia’s greatest but still most controversial fiction writer, whose career spans more than 40 years.

Based on traditional notions of womanhood, these duties were used by the Indonesian State to restrict women's activities to the private sphere, that is, the family and domesticity. Linked with the Five Duties was kodrat wanita (women's destiny), an unofficial code of conduct, loosely based on biological determinism. Kodrat wanita became a benchmark by which women were measured during this period, and to a large extent this code is still valid today. I have consulted sources written in languages other than Dutch, all of which I have translated personally and included, in the original, in the footnotes. These translations are imperfect and necessarily do some harm to the original. I ask the reader to indulge my renditions with patience and magnanimity. I have also consulted numerous translations, most notably Max Lane’s rendition of the Boeroe tetralogy and Willem Samuels (highly edited) version of Nyanyi Sunyi (The Mute’s Soliloquy). Given the significance of bahasa Indonesia to the formation of the Indonesian nation, the mediation of these works by their translators renders them in a fundamentally different way. The works I analyze, however, are the translations; I refer to them as such by their English names. Christopher GoGwilt has discussed the implications of translating Pramoedya’s work into English in a thoughtful essay, to which I direct the reader’s attention.1 In this essay, I have tried to preserve the original spelling of those words that have no English translation, or carry special significance in their original context: the ‘u’ (as in ‘blue’) in bahasa Indonesia and Dutch is written as ‘oe’, so that ‘Buru’ becomes ‘Boeroe’ and ‘Pramudya’ becomes ‘Pramoedya’.

In his novel, Pramoedya organized a selection of historical facts and filled the gaps with stories to construct a sense of nation inside his characters. Linking the subjective experience of a man and the objective history of a nation, this historical novel reflects the condition of early twentieth century colonial Indonesia during the conception of nation and the start of national awakening period. The author coded the novel based on the character‘s idea of nation and connected it with the concept of truths in order to answer the research question. This paper concludes that Pramoedya created an idea of nation through experiences of the character. It also became apparent that Footsteps‘ conception of nation stresses the use of Malay as a national language, Islam as a uniting identity, and anti-colonialism.
