The reader should, rather, read the texts presented here as a wide-ranging kaleidoscope showing some aspects of the impressive breadth and depth of contemporary intermedia research. There are two obvious reasons for publishing this collection of contemporary contributions concerning intermedia research. First of all, the articles included mark a state of the art, at least in the shape of a small sample, of the intermedial research produced today. And secondly, the book is meant to honour our friend and colleague Hans Lund, a crucial person in Scandinavian and Western interarts and intermedia research. But there is a third, and better, reason, too. Contemporary art and literature are marked by an increased intermedial interest, and – perhaps as a result of this – a growing amount of academic research is being done, with or without the term “ intermedial” directly attached, inside and outside and on the borders of the “proper” interart institutions. It could be argued that contemporary academic research is being pushed forward by the wave of (a renewed) interest in mixing the genres and media in a veritable expression of the dream of the Sister Arts – or ut pictura poesis. Or perhaps one should argue that contemporary art and literature is striving to, once and for all, bury the dream of the loving relationship between the arts? Is a paragone between the arts based on the dream of a similar existential or aesthetic foundation, leading to marriage or fi ght – or are the different arts simply internally untranslatable? No matter: any reader orienting herself/himself in the artistic and academic landscape in the western countries will realize that the epoch of isolated art products as well as art and media studies belongs to the past. And the idea that musicologists, literary scholars and art historians, to name but a few of the important scholars in cultural analysis, must

  • Operaharmony
#OPERAHARMONY CREATING OPERAS IN ISOLATION 1 3 WELCOME TO #OPERA HARMONY FROM FOUNDER – ELLA MARCHMENT Welcome to #OperaHarmony. #Opera Harmony is a collection of opera makers from across the world who, during this time of crisis, formed an online community to create new operas. I started this initiative when the show that I was rehearsing at Dutch National Opera was cancelled because of the lockdown. Using social media and online platforms I invited colleagues worldwide to join me in the immense technical and logistical challenge of creating new works online. I set the themes of ‘distance’ and ‘community’, organised artist teams, and since March have been overseeing the creation of twenty new operas. All the artists involved in #OperaHarmony are highly skilled professionals who typically apply their talents in creating live theatre performances. Through this project, they have had to adapt to working in a new medium, as well as embracing new technologies and novel ways of creating, producing, and sharing work. #OperaHarmony’s goal was to bring people together in ways that were unimaginable prior to Covid-19. Over 100 artists from all the opera disciplines have collaborated to write, stage, record, and produce the new operas. The pieces encapsulate an incredibly dark period for the arts, and they are a symbol of the unstoppable determination, and community that exists to perform and continue to create operatic works. This has been my saving grace throughout lockdown, and it has given all involved a sense of purpose. When we started building these works we had no idea how they would eventually be realised, and it is with great thanks that we acknowledge the support of Opera Vision in helping to both distribute and disseminate these pieces, and also for establishing a means in which audiences can be invited into the heart of the process too .

  • Jewel Is an Acclaimed American Singer, Songwriter, Actress, Poet, Painter, Philanthropist and Daughter to an Alaskan Cowboy Singer-Songwriter
WORLDWIDE SPEAKERS GROUP LLC YOUR GLOBAL PARTNER IN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP JEWEL Jewel is an acclaimed American singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter, philanthropist and daughter to an Alaskan cowboy singer-songwriter. From the remote ranch of her Alaskan youth to the triumph of international stardom, the four-time Grammy nominee, hailed by the New York Times as a “songwriter bursting with talents” has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. Her singular style and beauty continuously land her on the covers of such diverse magazines as TIME, People, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, In Style, Glamour and Seventeen. Stuff listed her among its “102 Sexiest Women in the World” while Blender went further, crowning her “rock’s sexiest poet.” Jewel launched her musical career early on, performing as a father-daughter act in Alaskan biker bars and lumberjack joints. Her solo career took off after she moved to San Diego, where she experienced moderate success in the folk-coffeehouse scene while living out of her car. Her first record, a deeply introspective, modern folk collection called Pieces of You, sold about 3,000 copies, nearly all in San Diego, in the nine months after its February 1995 debut. She then hit the road, touring with and opening for the likes of Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, and Neil Young. She followed up her debut album with a succession of albums that steadily built her reputation and fan base: Spirit, This Way, and 0304. After a tremendous amount of success as a singer-songwriter and over 27 million albums sold, Jewel returned to her roots with the release of two country albums Perfectly Clear and Sweet and Wild.
