4. Dan Mangan Easter weekend concert at Charlotte Street Arts Centre Apr 21

Tickets are on sale for a great Easter weekend show, Thursday, April 21, 2011 with Dan Mangan at the Charlotte Street Arts Center, doors open 7pm, show 8pm.

Heralded as a favourite among Canada’s new breed of independent musicians, the British Columbian song smith has had little time to spend at home lately. The acclaim from Nice, Nice, Very Nice has already earned Mangan a handful of international record deals, and he has long since cut his teeth on the road. The new age troubadour has shared the stage with the likes of Patrick Watson, Elliott Brood, Great Lake Swimmers and Basia Bulat, and his playing caused CHARTattack to exclaim: “Feels so beautiful and personal that time ceases to exist,” – a sound no doubt perfectly matched to the elegant Charlotte Street Arts Center.

2

Advance tickets for this concert are on sale at Backstreet Records (384 Queen Street), Read’s Newsstand (435 King Street) and online at http://www.danmangan.eventbrite.com/ $20 advance (+service fee) / $25 at the door. http://www.myspace.com/danmangan

28. New Executive Director appointed to New Brunswick Arts Board

New Brunswick Arts Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Akoulina Connell as Executive Director.

Connell returned to New Brunswick four years ago after five years in British Columbia and an eight-year stint in Montreal. She completed a B.A. in English Literature at St.F.X, followed by a year of Interior Design at Ryerson, and then an M.A. in English Literature at McGill.

9 Over the years, she has worked in both the private and public sectors — as tech writer, marketing writer, freelance tutor, editor, project manager, communications advisor, and most recently as managing editor at Goose Lane Editions.

Her early years were lived in northern Ontario, southern France, Western Australia, and in Sussex, New Brunswick. Championing the arts has deep significance for her. She grew up in a community of artists just outside Sussex, N.B. The practice and discussion of art, sculpture, dance, theatre, literature, and music — and its relevance to the economy, polemics, science, psychology, sociology, etc. was an integral part of life.

Her father is a geologist who grew up in Woodstock, and her mother is French — a painter who had trained at l'école des beaux arts in Paris, where she met Connell’s great-aunt, Lucy Jarvis, who was co-founder of the Art Centre at UNB (Lucy’s contemporaries were Pegi Nicol Macleod, Jack Humphreys, Tom Forestall, Fred Ross, and the Bobaks). The Deichmanns, Pownings, and Lee Saunders were part of the rich milieu in which she grew up.

She is thrilled to be back in New Brunswick, making a tangible contribution to the flourishing, richly diversified arts community in the province. “Taking on the role of Executive Director at ArtsNB is an exhilarating opportunity. I’m looking forward to working with the full spectrum of players in our arts scene, government, and the greater public. New Brunswick’s arts community has gained a lot of momentum in the past 20-30 years — and the outlook, to me, is burgeoning with possibility and promise.

3. The New Brunswick Arts Board the next deadline for juried programs: June 15

The New Brunswick Arts Board (artsnb) has announced the next deadline for its juried programs. June 15, 2011 is the deadline for nominations under the Lieutenant-Governor’s Awards for High Achievement in the Arts. These awards will recognize exceptional work by artists who have committed their professional lives to the advancement of art in the province and abroad.

10 Three prizes are awarded annually: one in the visual arts, one in the performing arts, and one in the literary arts. In the literary arts category, prizes alternate between Anglophones and Francophones each year. This year, the French Language Literary Arts will be awarded.

Peer juries are organized and the members are specialized professionals from within the province and from outside. A jury has the right not to award a prize if the applications received do not attain the high level of excellence that is expected.

The prizes are valued at $20,000 each and will be given to artists who were born in New Brunswick or who have been residents of the province for at least 5 years and who have contributed in an exceptional manner to the advancement of their artistic discipline in New Brunswick as well as outside the province.

This competition is open to those working in visual arts (craft, media arts, photography, and visual arts), in performing arts (dance, music, storytelling and theatre), and literary arts (including literary translation). The names of the awardees will be made public before an official ceremony in the fall 2011.

A detailed program description, nomination forms or further information are available through Robert Bryar, the programs officer, at artsnb, 61 Carleton Street, Fredericton, NB, E3B 3T2 or by calling (506) 444-4444 or 1-866-460- 2787 (toll free in New Brunswick) or by visiting our web site at www.artsnb.ca.
