The Juno nominated artist’s new album, ‘Compostela,’ which translates to Field of Stars, teeters on psychedelic folk and welcomes you into a balladry of melodic storytelling. Grant is joined by her talented band of players who help to create the colors and textures of her captivating live show. Inspired by the wilderness of the forest and eastern seas of her new home in Nova Scotia, ‘Compostela’ explores time, courage, healing, wonder, and of course love. Toronto-based, Great Lake Swimmers, have established themselves as a beloved indie folk act in Canada and beyond. Their new album ‘The Waves, The Wake’ sees the group branching out to include new sounds such as harp, lute, pipe organ, woodwinds, and percussion, alongside the more familiar flecks and chimes of the banjo, piano, and electric guitar. He learned his chops at an early age mentored by some of the legendary greats of the area, performing all over Prince Edward Island in halls, clubs, barns and kitchens. ‘Hi How Are You’ was released in the mid 90’s and the accolades rolled in, the awards, the touring, the interviews and appearances, the persona took shape and the legend took hold. Ashley continues today with the same passion and dedication to his fans, his craft and his country. Beck’s multi award-winning debut lures listeners into an ethereal and enveloping soundscape, as the songs take you on a trek across a wide emotional range – from regret and grief to wonder and joy. Adapted by Cory Bowles, with original live music by Nick Fraser, this work gives new breath to one of Shakespeare’s best known and loved works. Decidedly Jazz Danceworks is one of the only companies worldwide with jazz dance and music as its raison d’etre. Performing both in its hometown of Calgary and on tour across Canada and beyond, they’ve produced more than 60 original works since its inception in 1984, many with live music. The company’s high energy and unique style have caused people to describe their work as “music for the eyes.” 9 Saturday, November 2 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari A Special film screening with live orchestration Featuring members of Symphony New Brunswick and Resonance Tickets - $26 Members - $23 Students - $13 Symphony New Brunswick joins forces with New Brunswick-based experimental and new classical music company Resonance for this innovative performance. A nine-piece live orchestra performs an original score by New Brunswick composer Andrew Miller alongside the screening of the 1920 silent horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This German Expressionist film shares the story of a murderous hypnotist and is considered one of the most influential films of all time. Resonance supports the creation and production of experimental music, improvised music, artistic collaborations and new classical music in New Brunswick. Almost 100 works have been premiered for various projects: written by composers across Canada. 10 Thursday, November 7 Tara MacLean’s Atlantic Blue The Stories of Atlantic Canada’s Iconic Songwriters Tickets - $34 Members - $31 Students - $17 Celebrated PEI born singer/songwriter, Tara MacLean, takes you on a journey into the past, telling the story of how music arrived and thrived on the East Coast of Canada. Atlantic Blue is about the place and the people behind classic songs like Sonny’s Dream, Put Your Hand in the Hand, Fare Thee Well Love, Movin’ on, Working Man, and many more, who found a way to create beauty from the challenging experiences in their own lives.

Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

The word is often simultaneously used as both an umbrella term for all Indigenous people with complex genders or sexualities, and with the specific, literal understanding that two-spirit means someone who has two spirits. This thesis discusses findings from a series of qualitative interviews with young trans, queer and two-spirit Indigenous people living in Toronto. Exploring the ways in which participants understand the term two-spirit to be a meaningful and complex signifier for a range of ways of being in the world, this paper does not seek to define the term two-spirit; rather, following the direction of research participants, the thesis instead seeks to trouble the idea that articulating a definition of two-spirit is a worthwhile undertaking. ii Acknowledgments There are many people without whom I would not have been able to complete this research. Settler colonialism seeks to deny Indigenous Peoples a ‘contemporary’ by asserting both a temporal and spatial boundary. The temporal and spatial boundaries intended for Indigenous Peoples foster expectations from the dominant white culture regarding Indigeneity. Cree Mennonite cellist Cris Derksen and Wolastoqi singer Jeremy Dutcher mobilise settler expectations and institutional opportunities in their distinctive musical practices. These musical practices are the results of exchange and dialogue between Euro-American classical music and Indigenous musics, resulting in what Dawn Avery calls ‘Native Classical Music’. Such dialogues are negotiated through these musicians’ resistance to Euro- American classical music hierarchies, settler logics about authenticity and their resourcefulness in navigating settler institutions.

    THE MUSIC DISTRIBUTION INDUSTRY IN CANADA 2006 BY LARRY LEBLANC FEB. 2006 This report has been prepared by Larry LeBlanc for the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). The purpose of this document is to provide a profile of the English and French-language components of distribution of the Canadian-owned label and artist sector as well as Canadian artists signed or distributed by multinationals in Canada. The report specifically discusses changes in the music distribution sector in Canada since 1998. As well, such newly emerging factors as the rise of widespread Internet-based downloading; the rise of music subscription services; and the use of ringtones, ringtunes and podcasting in affecting music sales are also discussed. The report indicates that Canadian music retail has become more consolidated and more selective with product choices. Major music retailers carry a different product mix today than a decade ago. There are fewer music CDs, and more film-related DVD and computer game product. Although radio remains a critical vehicle for the Canadian record industry, labels and retailers cite a waning impact of the medium on overall sales. The study is based on a review of existing documentation, secondary research as well as analysis and findings drawn from 11 interviews conducted by Larry LeBlanc, as the principal source of primary research. Music OVERVIEW Canada's small market size, and a sizable support infrastructure is enabling the domestic industry to develop distinct acts for audiences home and abroad.
