Interactions of Patagonian Toothfish Fisheries With
CCAMLR Science, Vol. 17 (2010): 179–195 INTERACTIONS OF PATAGONIAN TOOTHFISH FISHERIES WITH KILLER AND SPERM WHALES IN THE CROZET ISLANDS EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE: AN ASSESSMENT OF DEPREDATION LEVELS AND INSIGHTS ON POSSIBLE MITIGATION STRATEGIES P. Tixier1, N. Gasco2, G. Duhamel2, M. Viviant1, M. Authier1 and C. Guinet1 1 Centre d’Etudes Biologiques de Chizé CNRS, UPR 1934 Villiers-en-Bois, 79360 France Email – [email protected] 2 MNHN Paris, 75005 France Abstract Within the Crozet Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) longline fishery is exposed to high levels of depredation by killer (Orcinus orca) and sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). From 2003 to 2008, sperm whales alone, killer whales alone, and the two species co-occurring were observed on 32.6%, 18.6% and 23.4% respectively of the 4 289 hauled lines. It was estimated that a total of 571 tonnes (€4.8 million) of Patagonian toothfish were lost due to depredation by killer whales and both killer and sperm whales. Killer whales were found to be responsible for the largest part of this loss (>75%), while sperm whales had a lower impact (>25%). Photo-identification data revealed 35 killer whales belonging to four different pods were involved in 81.3% of the interactions. Significant variations of interaction rates with killer whales were detected between vessels suggesting the influence of operational factors on depredation. When killer whales were absent at the beginning of the line hauling process, short lines (<5 000 m) provided higher yield and were significantly less impacted by depredation than longer lines. -

Unfortunately, many of the states and people least responsible for the levels of climate changing greenhouse gas emissions will suffer the most severe consequences. Increased flooding -

Steven Stern Matt Naylor
Music by America's Veterans We are proud to announce the release of Unsung Heroes, a collaboration between America’s combat veterans and APM songwriters. Unsung Heroes was born out of the experiences of veteran Richard Casper whose moving story led him to dedicate his life to helping other wounded veterans through the healing power of music through an organization he co-founded, (www.creativets.org). Working together, an American veteran and an APM songwriter write a song inspired by the veteran’s wartime experience and they share songwriting credit and reve- nues from licensing of their music by APM. This first release includes nine powerful songs with both vocal and non-vocal versions. We hope you will be inspired to find a place for these songs in your productions. A percentage of APM’s profits are donated to CreatiVets. Keane, for Allowing Us to Come and Visit with You Today
BIL KEANE June 28, 1999 Joan Horne and myself, Ann Townsend, interviewers for the Town of Paradise Valley Historical Committee are privileged to interview Bil Keane. Mr. Keane has been a long time resident of the Town of Paradise Valley, but is best known and loved for his cartoon, The Family Circus. Thank you, Mr. Keane, for allowing us to come and visit with you today. May we have your permission to quote you in part or all of our conversation today? Bil Keane: Absolutely, anything you want to quote from it, if it's worthwhile quoting of course, I'm happy to do it. Ann Townsend: Thank you very much. Tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you to hot Arizona? Bil Keane: Well, it was a TWA plane. I worked on the Philadelphia Bulletin for 15 years after I got out of the army in 1945. It was just before then end of 1958 that I had been bothered each year with allergies. I would sneeze in the summertime and mainly in the spring. Then it got in to be in the fall, then spring, summer and fall. The doctor would always prescribe at that time something that would alleviate it. At the Bulletin I was doing a regular comic and I was editor of their Fun Book. I had a nine to five job there and we lived in Roslyn which was outside Philadelphia and it was one hour and a half commute on the train and subway. I was selling a feature to the newspapers called Channel Chuckles, which was the little cartoon about television which I enjoyed doing. -
Keyshia Cole Her Boyfriend and Best Friend Are Having an Affair, Something She’S Never Experienced
NOVEMBER 2012 ISSUE MMUSICMAG.COM when I think too much, I could be feeling something and not want to say it because of what people are going to think. When I drink, my emotions flow. So almost every night was a wild night—a debate night.” Although Cole has a solid, loving family life with her husband, NBA star Daniel Gibson, and their toddler son, she knows the album’s content may place her in the crosshairs of tabloid gossips that ache to connect the songs to her personal life. She considers the scrutiny a small price to pay for reaching out to fans with such songs as “Enough of No Love” and “Can’t Make U Love Me.” Cole had to change her writing and recording style to fully immerse herself in others’ pain, and admits the process was emotionally taxing. For starters, she’s not one to embrace collaboration with other S iren Digital 2 songwriters or producers. “I usually think, ‘Just let me work. I don’t need other writers or producers,’” she says. “This is the first time I sat down with writers in the studio, and it was a learning process. We’d sit there and say ‘I feel this,’ or ‘I heard that.’ If they were sharing something I’d never experienced, I was able to relate, to feel the pain.” One song, “Trust and Believe,” is about a woman who discovers KEYSHIA COLE her boyfriend and best friend are having an affair, something she’s never experienced. The R&B singer-songwriter learns the value “Still, I definitely feel if you’ve been hurt you of collaboration can feel pain from others’ relationships.” Cole hopes her fans can relate to her KEYSHIA COLE IS IN HER MANHATTAN Angeles and Cleveland where she wrote songs in the same way. -
