NIELSEN MUSIC 20I7 YEAR-END MUSIC REPORT CANADA 1 INTRODUCTION The music industry in Canada has never been stronger, with record consumption, growing live music attendance and a new class of emerging artists. Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Welcome to the Nielsen Music Year-End Report, which examines the trends that shaped the Paul Shaver Canadian music industry in 2017 with definitive consumption figures and charts. Vice President/ Head of Nielsen Music Canada Overall consumption of albums, songs and On-Demand Audio streaming grew 13.6% year-over- year. On-Demand Audio streaming offset decreases in track and album sales and, on December 3, for the first time in history, it surpassed the 900 million per week mark. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week. Also, six of the group’s albums re-entered the Billboard Canadian Albums chart.

Our local radio station was playing Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone) in heavy rotation and my sister went to see them in concert at the Galt Arena Gardens in Cambridge. It wasn’t until their second album that I www.TheBulletinMagazine.com really discovered their music when Diamond Sun came out. I bought most Editor: of their singles on vinyl 45s, and I had a variety of Glass Tiger cassettes and Blair Matthews CDs over the years as the technology changed. • The Sneak Preview Official Biography
The Sneak Preview Official Biography The Sneak Preview was a melodic punk rock band from Maple, Ontario. They formed in the summer of 2000, after Joel Bath (drums) and Mike Mucci (guitar) broke up their band “Then Who Is the Liar?”. The duo started writing new songs alone in Joel’s parent’s basement in Thornhill, Ontario, with influences from Dinosaur Jr., Elliot, Sunny Day Real Estate and a few more local Ontario bands. They then invited Mark “Augie” Petja, to join as bassist as he had previously played in Five Finger Discount with them. The final addition would be Marco Fardella on vocals. Now a complete band, they moved their rehearsal space to Mike’s parent’s house in Maple, Ontario, where they continued to practice until the end. With their first few songs composed, The Sneak Preview were invited to play at a field party somewhere north of Toronto. The details of this have faded with time. But their second should would be well documented. Mike and his girlfriend (now wife) Vicki Bonanno had been booking a few shows for local bands at The Masonic Lodge in Maple, Ontario. It was there that they had booked one of Then Who Is the Liar?’s show in May of 2000 with The China White. The Sneak Preview at their first real show, September 30th 2000 at The Masonic Lodge in Maple, Ontario. Photo courtesy of Vicki Bonanno Eager to play with Chris Gray again, the couple contacted him to book his new band, Zyon, with The Sneak Preview at The Masonic Lodge on September 30th.
