    Interview with Dan Mangan Carla Bergman and Sylvia Mcfadden Dan is a local Vancouver singer-songwriter who spends much time on the road. He is soon to release his second album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice. We did this interview via the internets because he was on the road . When Dan Mangan performs he gently takes over the room. Everyone’s voices hush and all attention goes to him. His music resonates out of his whole body, starting from his toes. His songs evoke introspection: leaving you sipping tea and looking out whatever window is nearest. His words are tinged with a universal melancholy. His music is a direct link to the heart, his lyrics a direct link to the mind. Listening to Dan is a whole body experience. “I want to be around people/I want to mention the things that bring out the tears in us” -Ash Babe RAIN: Tell us about yourself, what do you play? DAN: Music, primarily, I was never all that good at sports… though I do enjoy ice hockey. I live in Vancouver and spend most of my time on the road, telling everyone how pleasing it is to live in Vancouver. R: How long have you been playing? D: I played novice B – that’s what you play when you’re 8 years old and not very good at hockey.. In terms of music, I picked up the guitar now and then as a young kid – as they were often leaning against the walls in my home – but I started taking it seriously around 12..

    BIO // DAN MANGAN // NICE, NICE, VERY NICE Album: Nice, Nice, Very Nice Catalogue #: A&C055 Format: LP / DD / CD CD/Digital/LP Release Date: August 10, 2010 Heralded as a favorite among Canada's new breed of independent musicians, Dan Mangan’s travels initially took him everywhere but home. Spending most of the last six years toting guitar and merch-sack, Dan experienced Vancouver as more of a resting place than roost. He toured nearly non-stop in support of his debut album Postcards And Daydreaming, testing his words, honing his craft, and building a dedicated following. Graciously, if un-strategically, Mangan pretty much accepted every gig that came his way. He train’d and plane'd on his own throughout North America, Europe and Australia because he couldn’t afford to bring a band along. When he cobbled together funds to get a second album made, he enlisted Toronto based producer John Critchley and spent weeks at Green Door Studios, bringing in musical collaborators from around the country. By the time that sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice (named in reference to a Kurt Vonnegut calypso) hit the airwaves across his homeland, Dan had already cut his teeth on the road. Recently signed to Arts & Crafts, the trail-blazing indie label that brought us Broken Social Scene, Feist, and Stars, Dan Mangan is the first on their roster from the Pacific Northwest. Though Vancouverites once envied the thriving music scenes of Montreal and Toronto, Mangan’s rain-soaked hometown has since developed a potent scene of its own – in recent years, its eclectic and supportive musical community has produced the likes of The New Pornographers, Ladyhawk, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Black Mountain, and Japandroids.

They switch instruments, obsess over sound levels and noodle inces- santly across the past six decades of popular tunes. Zeus have been touted by Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett as the next great Ca- nadian rock band and now they’re headlining Friday night’s marquee event at the end of Canadian Music Week. For the four musi- cians from small town Ontario, the group may finally be arriving at a sound they’ve been working toward since they were kids. “I woke up the other day and something felt different.
