  • Water in Pre-Christian Beliefs in Pomerania (Northern Poland) of the Early Medieval Period
20 S TUDIA MYTHOLOGICA SLAVICA 2017 15 – 32 Water in pre-Christian beliefs in Pomerania (northern Poland) of the early medieval period Kamil Kajkowski, Andrzej Kuczkowski Based on written sources and archaeological evidence, ethnographic and linguistic ma- terial, and the knowledge of the rest of Slavonic-occupied regions, the authors research early medieval Pomeranian communities in which water played a significant role. Water, as a life-providing element on the one hand, and a destructive element on the other, was not only essential for the economy, but also indispensably carried symbolic meaning and played an important role in religious ceremonies and magical rites. An attempt at characterizing Pomeranian water ritual also defining the sacred spaces of pre-Christian sanctuaries is made in the following article. KEYWORDS: water, pre-Christian beliefs, Pomerania, Poland, Slavonic beliefs, pre- Christian rituals, archaeology 1. INTRODUCTION The area of Pomerania, the north-western part of modern Poland, is symbolically restricted by three major rivers: the Vistula from the east, the Oder from the west, the and Noteć from the south. The northern barrier of this post-glacial area is the southern coast of Baltic Sea. One of the dominant features of this type of landscape is numerous, relatively small lakes and a predominantly longitudinally-oriented network of rivers. As drinking water reserves, as well as habitats of species utilized by the early medieval economy, they must have played an important role in the cultural landscape and religious ideas. In the following article, we intend to take a closer look at the significance of water in pre-Christian Pomeranian beliefs of the early medieval period, i.e.

The phenomenon of over a hundred years of Slavic domination over the Baltic Sea http://dx.doi.org/10.12775/SIT.2019.003 The term “Dominion over the Baltic Sea” (Dominion maris Baltici) began to appear in Polish sources as early as in the 15th century. Initially, it was used primarily in the context of defending one’s own ports and coasts1. It should be remembered, however, that the phe- nomenon of defending one’s own coastal territories against Baltic tribes, or their maritime expansion in the form of pirate expeditions undertaken to plunder or seek to conquer areas on the other side 1 At the beginning of the previous century, Adam Szelągowski, a student of the eminent Polish historian Tadeusz Wojciechowski, claimed that the battle for the Dominion maris Baltici had begun already in the middle of the 13th century, i.e. from the establishment of the first commercial and political power on the Baltic Sea, which was the Hanseatic League. This struggle lasted continuously until the first half of the 18th century as a form of competition between the northern powers: Sweden and Denmark, Moscow and Sweden, Poland and Sweden and Moscow, id., Walka o Bałtyk (1544–1621), in: Sprawa północna w wiekach XVI i XVII, part 1, Lwów 1904, pp. IX–X.

Crras s - -N ob d l^aureate Gelrwttm Comsci ence or Polish Patri ct? by Paul Kulas Gflnter Grass, the German novelist, poet, and artist, was named winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature in September. Grass is considered the most prominent post-war German writer to confront his countrymen about their Nazi past. He was bom in the Free City of Danzig (now Gdafsk, Poland) n 1927 and he lived there until he began military service n 1944. He served in a tank cotps, was wounded and hospitalized, and later intemed in an American POW camp. His widely acclaimed "Danzig Trilogy"- Die Blechtommell (1959, English translation: The Tin Drurn, 1962); Katz und M aus ( 1 961, C at and M ouse, I 963); Hundejahre ( 1 963, The Dog Years,1965)-are regarded as his most important works. Grass writes with Rabelaisian humor and a fascination for the bizaffe and grotesque. He is at times, beautifully poetic and at others, starkly graphic. His most famous work, Die Blechtommell [The Tin Drurn], was also made into a popular movie. The novel is a vivid description of the horror of the Nazi years. Set primarily in Danzig/Gdafisk, it covers the years 1899 to 1954 though it concentrates primarily on the years 1933 to 1945. Events are seen through the eyes of Oskar Matzerath (or is he Oskar Bronski?), a dwarf who refuses to grow and mature and to take part in the absurdities of war.

ZINĀTNISKIE RAKSTI https://doi.org/10.22364/lviz.110.01 VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN GERMANS AND WENDS IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE TENTH CENTURY1* Mihai Dragnea PhD, Balkan History Association, President, Bucharest; Editor-in-Chief of Hiperboreea, an online academic journal published biannually by the BHA. Research interests: relations between Germans and Wends during the High Middle Ages, focusing especially on crusading and conversion. This study has provided a brief analysis of the linguistic interactions and ver- bal communication between Germans and Wends. What we noticed is that there is no Slavic language which has been unaffected by political and social influences from other dominant cultures. In the second half of the tenth cen- tury, cultural identity was linked more with political alliances than with lan- guage. Learning of German was a political reality which varied according to time and context. In order to maintain good relations with the Saxon nobi- lity, the Wendish elites needed to know German. This would have ensured a direct, unambiguous communication. Translators could interfere with the messages and generate conflicts. Some of the Wendish elites could have known Latin as well. As tributaries of Saxon margraves and dukes, they could have signed documents regarding their obligations. Therefore, a sort of ethnic consciousness was more developed among the Wendish upper classes than lower class. Key words: linguistic interactions, cultural borders, Wends, Duchy of Saxony, Thietmar of Merseburg, Adam of Bremen, Helmold of Bosau. * This research was conducted at the Faculty of Catholic Theology within the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and it was supported by the EU-funded project “Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies – ReI- ReS” (Scholarships for Transnational Access), grant agreement ID: 730895.

Archaeology of the Slavic Migrations Michel Kazanski Most archaeologists associate the Roman-period Proto-Slavs with the Kiev culture in the middle and upper Dnieper basin, kindred to it sites of the type Zaozer´e in the upper Dnieper and the upper Dvina basins, and finally the groups of sites of the type Cherepyn–Teremtsy in the upper Dniester basin and of the type Ostrov in the Pripyat basin. The fate of the early Slavs was much influenced by the events on the early stage of the Great Migration, when the Huns attacked the Goths in 375 CE. In the Dnieper area, from the mid-5th century CE on, the lands of the Goths were gradually taken by the populations of early Slavic cultures, who moved there from the upper Dnieper region.
