In previous studies on the relation of iodine to the thyroid, as de- termined by the effects produced by feeding this substance and its compounds to larval Anurans, 1 the following conclusions were either stated or implied, all of which have a direct bearing on the present experiments. (1) Inorganic iodine and its compounds, iodoform and potassium iodide, greatly accelerate metamorphosis of tadpoles. (2) Animals from which the thyroid gland had been removed at its inception (i.e. 6 ram. larwe), and which under normal conditions never undergo metamorphosis but grow to an abnormal size, quickly transform into frogs when fed iodine. (3) The follicles of the thy- roids of tadpoles on an iodine diet show a greater colloid content than do the glands of normally fed animals. These facts led to the conclusion that iodine is essential for amphibian metamorphosis, that it is the active constituent of the thyroid glands of these ani- mals, and, judging by its action on thyroidless tadpoles, that it exerts its action directly upon the cells and tissues of the organism without the necessity of undergoing transformation in the gland tissue; i.e., that iodine is capable of functioning as the thyroid hor- mone itself within the body, or else is transformed into this hor- mone through the activity of tissue other than that of the thyroid. -

(February 26, 2021) — In response to the devasting winter storms across many communities in the U.S., Mars, Incorporated announced a donation of nearly $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations, inclusive of a $100,000 donation to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. Grant F. Reid, CEO of Mars said: “We’re grateful that our Mars Associates are safe following the recent destructive and dangerous storms. But, many of them, their families and friends have been impacted along with millions of others We’re thankful for partner organizations like the American Red Cross that are bringing additional resources and relief to communities, people and pets, and we’re proud to play a part in supporting that work.” Mars has more than 60,000 Associates in the U.S. and presence in 49 states. In addition to the $100,000 American Red Cross donation, Mars Wrigley, Mars Food, Mars Petcare and Royal Canin will make in-kind product donations to help people and pets. As an extension of Mars Petcare, the Pedigree Foundation is supporting impacted pets and animal welfare organizations with $25,000 in disaster relief grants. Mars Veterinary Health practices including Banfield Pet Hospital, BluePearl and VCA Animal Hospitals are providing a range of support in local communities across Texas. Water in Pre-Christian Beliefs in Pomerania (Northern Poland) of the Early Medieval Period
20 S TUDIA MYTHOLOGICA SLAVICA 2017 15 – 32 Water in pre-Christian beliefs in Pomerania (northern Poland) of the early medieval period Kamil Kajkowski, Andrzej Kuczkowski Based on written sources and archaeological evidence, ethnographic and linguistic ma- terial, and the knowledge of the rest of Slavonic-occupied regions, the authors research early medieval Pomeranian communities in which water played a significant role. Water, as a life-providing element on the one hand, and a destructive element on the other, was not only essential for the economy, but also indispensably carried symbolic meaning and played an important role in religious ceremonies and magical rites. An attempt at characterizing Pomeranian water ritual also defining the sacred spaces of pre-Christian sanctuaries is made in the following article. One of the dominant features of this type of landscape is numerous, relatively small lakes and a predominantly longitudinally-oriented network of rivers. As drinking water reserves, as well as habitats of species utilized by the early medieval economy, they must have played an important role in the cultural landscape and religious ideas. Fagan, Ph.D Summary The main issue with creatine supplementation is that creatine supplements are not regulated by the FDA and so there is almost no uniformity among products. In addition, the labels are difficult for most individuals to understand, which makes trying to ascertain what people put into their body even more difficult. There is a strong dissociation between people taking supplements and accepting the risks that come along with them. A sample size of 31 individuals were randomly selected to fill out surveys for a research study that examined the association between the perceived risks and the willingness of people to take creatine as a supplement to aid them in their attempt to increase lean body mass. When it came to the negative side effects such as suffering from severe dehydration, kidney and liver damage, heart problems, or dying at a young age, people were not willing to pay as much money. Purpose: To determine whether Cr/Gly-induced thermoregulatory and cardiovascular responses are maintained when the majority (~75%) of the Glu in the Cr/Gly supplement is replaced with the insulintropic agent alpha lipoic acid (Ala). Methods: 22 healthy endurance trained cyclists were randomly assigned to receive either 20 g/day (4 × 5 g/day) of Cr, 2 g .kg-1 BM per day (4 × 0.5 g .kg-1 BM per day) of Gly and 150 g/day (4 × 37.5 g/day) of Glu or 20 g/day (4 × 5 g/day) of Cr monohydrate, 2 g .kg-1 BM per day (4 × 0.5 g .kg-1 BM per day) of Gly (100 g/day (4 × 25 g/day) of Glu and 1000 mg/day (4 × 250 mg/day) of Ala for 7 days for 7 days. -

Research Article The most severe brain damage associated with thyroid dysfunction during development is observed in neurological cretins from areas with marked iodine deficiency. The damage is irreversible by birth and related to maternal hypothyroxinemia before mid gestation. However, direct evidence of this etiopathogenic mechanism is lacking. Rats were fed diets with a very low iodine content (LID), or LID supplemented with KI. Other rats were fed the breeding diet with a normal iodine content plus a goitrogen, methimazole (MMI). The concentrations of -thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3'triiodo-- thyronine (T3) were determined in the brain of 21-d-old fetuses. The proportion of radial glial cell fibers expressing nestin and glial fibrillary acidic protein was determined in the CA1 region of the hippocampus. T4 and T3 were decreased in the brain of the LID and MMI fetuses, as compared to their respective controls. The number of immature glial cell fibers, expressing nestin, was not affected, but the proportion of mature glial cell fibers, expressing glial fibrillary acidic protein, was significantly decreased by both LID and MMI treatment of the dams. These results show impaired maturation of cells involved in neuronal migration in the hippocampus, a region known to be affected in cretinism, at a stage of development equivalent to mid gestation in humans.
