Thank you for respecting the hardwork of this author. About the Book Narendra Modi, the present Prime Minister of India, is a true blue RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or National Volunteers Organization) swayamsevak or volunteer. More importantly, he is a product of prachaarak system, a unique institution of RSS. More than his election campaigns, his conduct after becoming the Prime Minister really tells us how a responsible RSS worker and prachaarak responds to any responsibility he is entrusted with. His rise is also illustrative example of submission by author in this book that RSS has been able to design a system that can create ‘extraordinary achievers out of ordinary people’. When the first edition of Secrets of RSS was released, air was thick with motivated propaganda about ‘Saffron terror’ and RSS was the favourite whipping boy as the face of ‘Hindu fascism’. Now as the second edition is ready for release, environment has transformed radically.

  • By Koenraad Elst
History of Hindu India for everyman By Koenraad Elst Nowadays, multiculturalist state authorities in Western countries encourage the newer and more exotic religious denominations to produce textbooks explaining in simple language their own traditions and doctrines. While formally serving as textbooks for the religion’s own followers and their children, their interest for the authorities lies in the religion’s self-presentation to society at large. This way they know what gestures to make and what gaffes to avoid, and what holidays to acknowledge in the official calendar. An additional benefit is that it streamlines the religions’ self- understanding in a multiculturalism-friendly sense: even religions with a record of intolerance find they cannot get away with a straightforward restatement of their monopolistic claims on truth, and end up teaching pluralism to their children in spite of their inherited dogmas. This latter consideration is really quite unnecessary in the case of Hinduism, because the Hindus never needed any prodding from outside to take a pluralistic view of religion. Hinduism itself is already a commonwealth of communities, doctrines and practices, so it is thoroughly comfortable with peaceful co-existence in spite of differences. The Dutch, British and American textbooks of Hinduism that we have seen are simply being authentic when they declare unisono that Hinduism has a hoary tradition of heartfelt pluralism. Thus also the latest Hinduism textbook, under review here, The History of Hindu India from Ancient to Modern Times, by the editors of Hinduism Today magazine (Kauai, Hawaii) and Prof. em. Shiva Bajpai. It says: “Hinduism does not dictate one way as the only way.

Manas Patra M. A. in History (University of Hyderabad), Haringhata, Nadia, West Bengal (India) ARTICLE DETAILS ABSTRACT Article History The character of Golwalkar is still shrouded in deep controversies as it is constantly being Published Online: 10 January 2019 portrayed one way or another in political or historical discussions. While many argue that his ideological roots always stayed in touch with true findings through a proper assessment and Keywords the myth of Golwalkar being a mere Hindu propagandist in both social and political fields, M.S. Golwalkar, Hindutva, Rashtriya emerged as a result of the misinterpretations of his teachings or limiting it to one particular Swayamsevak Sangh, Hindu Rashtra, ideological or racial connotation by a group of people, others point out the unilateral Caste system approach and lack of diversity which in turn converted him into a belligerent hardliner who *Corresponding Author developed a pugnacious feeling towards anything other than Hindutva? Is Golwalkar‟s idea Email: patramanas90[at]gmail.com of Hindu Rashtra an enlightened nationalism which was grossly misjudged and thus created a myth of his vilified character based on vague generalisation? Or is it a circumscribed theory, clung to racial supremacy and therefore truly reflects his intentions? The aforementioned doubts led to numerous portrayals of the leader and gave birth of a myriad of interpretations. Whether he was a preacher of true findings or a propagandist built on an apocryphal sense of ideological reintervention, remains a matter of speculation.

103 Barbarous Brute: The Representation of Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur in Hindu Nationalist Historiography (1990-1999) Nathalie PAARLBERG Leiden University “Wise men have called an illustrious name a second life.”1 Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur’s life (1483-1530) hugged the turn of the sixteenth century yet, recently, his name has been voiced with unprecedented resonance. It is as if Babur, having lain dormant for centuries, has awoken from his slumber to the toils of the new states of Central and South Asia; to a second life. Emerging from the ruins of empire, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India each link Babur to their modern national and cultural identity. In so doing they emphasize different aspects of the Emperor and attest to his variegated appeal. I am fascinated by Babur’s second lives. No longer merely a historical individual, Babur has become the embodiment of an ideology, a past and a future. In this paper, I will analyze the representation of Babur in Hindu nationalist historiography in the run-up to and following the destruction of the Babri Masjid (1990-1999), Babur’s mosque, in the north Indian town of Ayodhya. Following a brief theoretical discussion of historical representation, I will describe Babur’s representation in the texts, and contextualize it within a socio-political framework so as to make explicit both the ideological narratives that inform the representation and the power structures it supports. I will argue that Babur’s representation in Hindu nationalist historiography is best seen within the context of the articulation of national identity in India, the aggressive assertion and delineation of a majoritarian Hindu body politic, and its hegemonic aspirations.
