Oldham St Annes #COYS SECOND TO NONE St Annes 34 Salford Roosters 18 2nd March 2019 NCL A resurgent Roosters side under a new head coach came to Higginshaw Road to banish the hiding they received there last season, and the ninety plus mauling they received on the reverse fixture later in the season. With a loss at Gatehead last week, the Saints were out for their first win of the season, whilst the Roosters had a great opening win against Dewsbury Celtic. Both teams started out trying to gauge each other for strengths and weaknesses, and it was the Saints who dominated the opening quarter, with Dom Bryan racing in a hatrick of tries in 30 minutes, Luke Skilling adding three conversions. Salford did have some great field position during that time, but some poor options and great defence kept the visitors at bay. On the stroke of half time the Roosters crossed under the posts through the young stand off after the Saints field to defuse a high kick to the left corner. Half time score 18-6. It only took three minutes for the Roosters to score after the restart through the stand off once more under the posts, and then on 54 minutes, the centre broke through some flimsy defence to touch down. Both the conversion found the target leaving the score deadlocked 18 all. The home side had to act fast, otherwise they would have been staring at another defeat. But three tries through the impressive John Deakin, Joe Hartley and an out- stretched Jaimie Dalloway plus 2 conversion rescued the Saints pride, and in turn, securing the win. Today should be a tight affair as both sides have had a similar start to the season. Since our last home encounter where we had a much needed win against Salford Roosters, a narrow loss at Leigh East and a tough draw up in Cumbria against Millom is the form we find ourselves in at present. Hopefully the Saints can create a fortress at home, and start to improve our away form to start to climb the table. It’s been a frustrating start for our Division One NWML side as they haven’t played any games of yet due to the weather and last minute cancellations, but hopefully they can get their 2019 campaign underway today against a strong Wigan St Cuthberts away from home. Both sides are on familiar terms, as in recent seasons they have faced each other in league games and cup finals, with Saints having the edge where it counts. Good luck to everyone today, and enjoy your rugby. The waggon trailer was purchased and work began. The driving force behind the work on the cabin was another ex-player Paul Garrett, who not only designed the layout of it but also completed the work with his trusted companion Paul Green. The overall project was complete in approximately six months and the end product is situated behind the goal at the Shaw Road end. The club cannot thank enough the people who gave up their time to work on it and it just shows you don’t need a lot of money, just hard work and a lot of good lads! With Thanks to the following, Paul Garrett, Paul Green, Jason Hopwood, Terry Hester, Graham Sykes, Leo Casy, Neil Woodcock, Rob Proudman, Andy Foy, Rick Badby, Andy Spencer (ALCO), Geoff Woodcock and Lee’s Brewery.

Honours were even last time we played in 2016, Saddleworth winning at their place 42 – 22 and we got the points at home 16 – 10. The season has really had a shocking start weather wise for some clubs, this is only Saddleworths second game of the season and no doubt they will be hoping to get off the mark after a defeat at Askam two weeks ago. We have been more fortunate with no postponements but after our flier in the first game away at Leigh East we have come a bit unstuck with defeats at home to Dewsbury Moor and away last week at Wigan St Judes.

The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.

#COYS SECOND TO NONE Saddleworth 22 Oldham St Annes 16 09.02.18 Standard Cup Semi Final As semi finals and derbies go, it doesn’t get much tougher going to Saddleworth Rangers on a cold, wet February afternoon. With Saints boasting a strong squad, Saddleworth opted to go with experience rather than youth in their line up and it was that quality that would be important in the result. The early exchanges were fierce, and Saddleworth certainly ramped up the pressure in the early stages pinning Saints in their own quarter. With ball in hand, Rangers thwarted the Saints attack with some strong defence, pushing them back time and time again. It was relentless, and it would take a great play to unlock the defence. As both sides were toughing it out through the middle, it took until the 23rd minute before the deadlock was broken, and it was the home side who scored in the right hand corner through Sam Hart. The conversion missed, Ranger lead 4 nil. This lead was short lived, as Saints started to get some better field position deep in the Saddleworth half. The visitors made this pay when Billy Barnes went from dummy half and bulldozed his way over the line to plant the ball over the line. Matt Whitehead added the extras, taking the Saints to a 6 points to 4 lead. 7 minutes later, Saints struck again as a chip over the top was collected by Dom Bryan who found Whitehead on his inside, and it was the stand off who romped under the posts to touch down an excellent worked move.
