SECOND to NONE Wigan St Judes 46 St Annes 30 #COYS SECOND TO NONE Wigan St JUdES 46 St Annes 30 15th January 2019 Friendly Saints started their pre-season in December, and it was time for a run out, and blow off the cobwebs prior to the season starting. The hosts, St Judes held the position of play off finalists in NCL Division 2 last season, so a tough test was at stake for the visitors. It was the Saints who were much the better side in the opening 20 minutes, punishing the home side with some great defence and attacking rugby. It was the visitors who scored first through a strong drive towards the line by Joe Hartley, who showed enough strength and guile to touch down. Matt Whitehead hit the conversion from wide out to give the Saints a much deserved lead. The lead was held for 15 minutes before the hosts replied after constant pressure of the Saints line. In true spirit, Saints didn’t let that affect their dominance, and three minutes later they went ahead once more thorough the rampaging John Deakin who powered through the defence to score. White- head, again was on hand to add the extras. What ever was said by the St Judes coaching staff after the try worked, as for 30 long minutes, St Judes were rampant down the flanks racing in 7 tries and 7 goals in that timeframe, shell shocking Saints as they trailed 46 to 12. Now most sides would give up, but the extra fitness that the visitors had put in at Tandle Hills and the gym during December came to the fore, and in the last 20 minutes were equally dominant scoring 3 tries in the process. The first came on 55 minutes, when the hard running prop, Rhys Wareing ran with full force against the Judes defence, who had no answer apart from the Saint scoring a well deserved try. Four min- utes later, it was that man, Deakin who claimed his second try scoring wide on the Judes left. The final try came to fullback Rob Charles who followed a towering kick from Matt Whitehead, saw that the home side fumbled the ball, and was the first to the ball to touch down. Whitehead continued his 100% kicking record of the day striking over his fifth conversion. All in all good run out for the Saints which will give both Paul Ashton and Sean Whitehead some ideas for the season ahead. The Saints best performer of the day was hooker Ryan Powell who was not just outstanding with ball in hand, but equally was as solid in defence, putting his body on the line time and time again. A warm welcome to our friends and local rivals, Waterhead who hopefully can build on the foundations that Jon Perks and Keith Brennan formed last season. With both teams winning their respective home NCL games against each other last term, today will be a tough encounter with both outfits looking to get their season off to a positive start. Our NCL side had a pre-season run out last week end against NCL Division 2 side, Wigan St Judes which was much needed after some tough pre-season workouts at Tandle Hills and in the gym. The scoreline of 46 to 30 in favour of the home side didn’t reflect the dominance the Saints had in the early stages of the game, but to their credit, the Saints came out on top in the last quarter scoring three tries. As you can see, during the off season the club has seen more improvements such as the refurbishment of the toilets, the new decking area and the resurfacing and marking out of the rear car park. By reinvesting in our facilities, we are becoming a venue that cannot be rivalled. On behalf of Oldham St Annes, many thanks for your continued support, and enjoy the game. The season has really had a shocking start weather wise for some clubs, this is only Saddleworths second game of the season and no doubt they will be hoping to get off the mark after a defeat at Askam two weeks ago. We have been more fortunate with no postponements but after our flier in the first game away at Leigh East we have come a bit unstuck with defeats at home to Dewsbury Moor and away last week at Wigan St Judes.

Today, we welcome the players, supporters and officials from Wigan St Jude’s, for today’s Kingstone Press NCL Division Two Round Fifteen game. St Jude’s have beaten us twice already this season. In the Coral Challenge Cup First Round, we went down 15-14 back in January, then in the reverse league fixture in May, we lost 41-30. Their recent form has seen them rise to second in the table. Gavin Rodden is the stand-out player, with 6 man of the match awards and 16 tries, whilst Dan Fallon’s 44 goals and 1 try makes him top points scorer. Crosfields have dropped to 8th in the league, having won 6 and lost 7. Last time out, though, it was a tremendous victory at leaders Ince Rose Bridge, 6-25, with two brilliantly taken tries by Nathan Taylor. John Whittaker and Jack Reid also crossed the whitewash, with Jack adding 4 conversions and a drop goal, for a man of the match performance.

The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.
