AHLTV.COM OPENING COURSE: YOUTH IS SERVED 2020-21 In the days leading up to the Chicago Wolves’ opener Friday night against the Grand Rapids Griffins, TALE OF THE TAPE head coach Ryan Warsofsky promised that his youngest players would be thrown right into the fire. REGULAR-SEASON SERIES Sure enough, when the Wolves took the ice, their 12-man forward group featured four players who 0-0-0-0 Rockford | 0-0-0-0 Chicago would normally be playing in juniors. LAST MEETING March 8, 2020 But with the juniors on hold until further notice due to COVID-19, four 19-year-olds — Seth Jarvis, Jamieson Rees, Ryan Suzuki and Phil Tomasino — found themselves in the thick of the action during the Wolves’ 3-1 victory over the Griffins that served as their professional debuts. Each youngster was placed on a different line with more experienced players. But when the power plays came... 0-0-0-0 1-0-0-0 Jarvis, who turned 19 Monday, delivered the game-winning goal when he deposited a power-play goal past Griffins goaltender Pat Nagle at the 2:09 mark of the second period. Tomasino and rookie LEADING SCORERS LAST YEAR Dominik Bokk (who turned 21 Wednesday) set up Jarvis with a perfect tic-tac-toe while Suzuki was ROCKFORD CHICAGO also part of that power-play unit. The only non-rookie, defenseman Jeremy Davies, showed some Skater G A Pts Skater G A Pts veteran savvy as he went out of his way to pick up the puck as a souvenir for Jarvis.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips February 28, 2014 Sharks-Sabres Preview By Nicolino DiBenedetto Associated Press February 28, 2014 The San Jose Sharks picked up where they left off before the Olympic break. Joe Pavelski is glad he didn't. Pavelski looks to build on a hat trick, as the Sharks attempt to beat the last-place Buffalo Sabres for the first time in four years Friday night. San Jose (38-16-6) has won four of five after routing Philadelphia 7-3 on Thursday in its first game in 20 days. The Sharks were outshot 10-5 and trailed 2- 1 after one period before outscoring the Flyers 5-0 in the second. "We didn't have a lot of purpose in our game in the first period, especially in their zone," coach Todd McLellan said. "Kind of skating around waiting for something to happen. We got our forecheck going in the second (and) a lot more pucks to the goaltender, which created second and third chances." Pavelski made his chances count Thursday, scoring on all three of his shots in the second period for his second hat trick of the season. The outburst also came after he had one goal in eight games prior to joining the United States in Sochi. "They were just going in," said Pavelski, who is tied with Toronto's Phil Kessel for second in the league with 32 goals. "Life is good. Hopefully they keep coming." That hasn't been the case against the Sabres (17-34-8), as Pavelski has three goals in seven career meetings and none in the past four.

  • Czarnik Hits Milestone in P-Bruins 5-3 Loss to Charlotte
Providence Bruins Nathan Roberts [email protected], 401.680.4734 Eddie Pannone [email protected] CZARNIK HITS MILESTONE IN P-BRUINS 5-3 LOSS TO CHARLOTTE Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins fell to the Charlotte Checkers Friday night 5-3, dropping down to fourth place in the Atlantic Division. The P-Bruins got goals from Austin Czarnik, Ryan Fitzgerald and Zach Senyshyn while Jordan Binnington made his 27th start of the season in net. Providence scored the first goal of the night, but Charlotte fired back with back-to-back goals. Czarnik opened the scoring on the power play with a wrist shot from the dot for his 24th goal of the season. Agostino earned the primary assist with a cross ice pass and Tommy Cross picked up the secondary helper at 13:54 to give the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute after Cznarik’s goal, Charlotte’s Haydn Fleury answered with the game-tying tally by taking a feed from Andrew Miller and beating Binnington back door. Just 53 seconds later, the Checkers scored again to snag the lead. Nicolas Roy scored at 15:21, tipping home a shot from Josiah Didier to give Charlotte a two goal advantage heading into the first intermission. Fitzgerald grabbed his 20th goal of the season just 36 seconds after the team hit the ice for the second period. Fitzgerald was assisted by both his linemates, Jordan Szwarz and Czarnik, catching the spin around pass from Szwarz and tying the game 2-2. Despite a strong effort, neither team was able to find the back of the net until the final five minutes.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips January 6, 2015 Sabres-Devils preview By Taylor Bechtold Associated Press January 6, 2015 After Jaromir Jagr's historic effort helped them emerge from their offensive slump, the New Jersey Devils should have an opportunity to keep it going against the defensively challenged Buffalo Sabres. Jagr and the Devils will try to win consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months Tuesday night against a visiting Buffalo team that is hoping to avoid its ninth loss in 10 games. Already one of the league's lowest-scoring clubs, New Jersey (14-20-7) came into Saturday's game against Philadelphia averaging 1.5 goals over a 3-8-3 stretch since last scoring more than three in a 5-3 victory at Toronto on Dec. 4. The 42-year-old Jagr got three by himself against the Flyers, passing Gordie Howe to become the oldest NHL player to record a hat trick in a 5-2 home win. "It's not easy to score in this league anymore," said Jagr, now three goals shy of Phil Esposito (717) for fifth all- time. "With the videos, the preparation, the systems they play, plus the goaltenders are so good." The line of Jagr, Adam Henrique and Scott Gomez combined for four goals and eight points Saturday as the Devils ended a two-game losing streak with their third win in their last 11 home games. Jagr, who had one goal over his previous 12 games, hasn't produced a point in his last five meetings with Buffalo dating to his time with Philadelphia.
