RALEIGH, NC – The will host their 2018 Prospect Development Camp from June 26 to June 30, 2018.

Players will go through off-ice training and educational sessions during the week, as well as on-ice sessions at PNC Arena. Attendees include Hurricanes prospects who are under contract and recent Hurricanes draft picks who have not yet signed. In addition, several undrafted and free agent amateur players will be in attendance.

All on-ice sessions are open to the public and media. Players will be available to the media at the conclusion of the final on- ice session each day. The full on-ice schedule can be found below.

Development Camp Notes Back Again – Fourteen players attending this year’s development camp also attended last year’s camp: , David Cotton, Brendan De Jong, Matt Filipe, Morgan Geekie, Jeremy Helvig, Jack LaFontaine, Eetu Luostarinen, Luke Martin, Stelio Mattheos, Martin Necas, Ville Rasanen, Luke Stevens and Max Zimmer.

Welcome to Raleigh – All six Hurricanes selections from the 2018 NHL Draft will attend this year’s development camp. Carolina selected right wing Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie, OHL) second overall, center Jack Drury (Waterloo, USHL) 42nd overall, center Luke Henman (Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) 96th overall, right wing Lenni Killinen (Blues U20, Finland-jr) 104th overall, defenseman Jesper Sellgren (Modo, Sweden-2) 166th overall and goaltender Jake Kucharski (Des Moines, USHL) 197th overall.

Svechnikov at Second – Right wing Andrei Svechnikov, taken second overall by the Hurricanes at this year’s draft, recorded 72 points (40g, 32a) in 44 games with Barrie (OHL) last season, and won both OHL Rookie of the Year and the CHL Top Prospect Award. His 0.91 goals per game led the league, and he was the only rookie in the OHL to reach the 40- mark. The Barnaul, Russia, native is only the eighth Russian in NHL history to be taken in the top two of the draft, and the first since Edmonton selected Nail Yakupov first overall in 2012. Svechnikov is the first Russian player drafted by Carolina since the Hurricanes took Igor Knyazev in the first round of the 2001 NHL Draft (15th overall).

World Juniors – Five players attending this year’s development camp represented their countries at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship (WJC) in Buffalo. Defenseman Jake Bean had three assists in seven games in his second straight appearance at the tournament for Canada, winning a gold medal in 2018 and a silver medal in 2017. Newly acquired Carolina Hurricanes 2018 Development Camp Guide defenseman Adam Fox played in his second straight WJC with Team USA, winning gold in 2017 and bronze while serving as an alternate in 2018. Center Martin Necas made his second consecutive appearance at the tournament for the Czech Republic, tying for the tournament lead in points (11) and leading in assists (8). Necas recorded at least one point in all seven games played at the 2018 WJC. Right wing Andrei Svechnikov made his WJC debut for Russia, posting five assists in five games.

Making the Jump – Four attendees from the Hurricanes’ 2017 Development Camp went on to make their NHL debut with Carolina in 2017-18 (Warren Foegele, Janne Koukkanen, Martin Necas and ). Eight players from last year’s camp appeared in at least one game with Charlotte (AHL) in 2017-18 (Jake Bean, Callum Booth, Foegele, , Kuokkanen, Steven Lorentz, Roy and Nick Schilkey), while three attendees played at least one game with Carolina’s ECHL affiliate, the (Booth, Lorentz, Spencer Smallman).

Starting Point – Out of the 31 players who appeared in at least one game with Carolina in 2017-18, 20 of them attended at least one Hurricanes Development Camp: Sebastian Aho (2015), (2013-14), Phillip Di Giuseppe (2012- 14), Justin Faulk (2010), Haydn Fleury (2014-16), Warren Foegele (2014-17), (2015), Janne Kuokkanen (2016-17), Elias Lindholm (2013), Brock McGinn (2012-14), Roland McKeown (2015-16), Martin Necas (2017), Brett Pesce (2013-15), Victor Rask (2013), Nicolas Roy (2015-17), Jeff Skinner (2010), Jaccob Slavin (2012, 2014), (2014), (2002) and (2016).

Wild West – Right wing Stelio Mattheos, picked 73rd overall by the Hurricanes in 2017, registered 90 points (43g, 47a) in 68 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), finishing second on his team in scoring. Mattheos tied for second in the WHL in game-winning goals with 10, and he had 29 multi-point performances. Center Morgan Geekie, taken 67 th overall in 2017, led the Tri-City Americans in points (84) for the second straight season (30g, 54a). Geekie’s teammate with the Americans, defenseman Jake Bean, was Carolina’s first-round pick in 2016 (13 th overall). Bean tied for the team lead in postseason assists, with 17 in 14 games, as Tri-City advanced to the conference finals for the first time in six years.

Earning a Spot – Forward Nick Schilkey attended last year’s development camp on an invite and signed a one-year AHL contract with Charlotte four days after the conclusion of camp. Schilkey, who played four seasons of college hockey at Ohio State, re-signed with the Checkers on June 1, 2018.

Shoot Your Shot – Camp invitee Alex Whelan, who plays for Quinnipiac, finished fourth in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (4.61) in 2017-18 and scored a team-high 16 goals. Whelan registered 175 shots in 38 games last season and recorded five or more shots 24 times.

Age Gap – Newly acquired defenseman Michael Fora is the oldest attendee of this year’s camp (born October 30, 1995). The youngest player is Lenni Killinen (born June 15, 2000).

Player Bios

Jake Bean Defenseman (24) Drafted by CAR in the first round, 13th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Bean registered 48 points (12g, 36a) in 57 WHL regular-season games split between and Tri-City in 2017-18. In 14 playoff games with Tri-City, Bean tied for the team lead in assists (17), including a five- assist performance on April 10, 2018 against Victoria. He was named WHL and CHL Player of the Week on April 15, 2018, after recording eight assists in two games. Bean represented Team Canada at both the 2017 (Silver) and 2018 (Gold) IIHF World Junior Championship, and he made his pro debut with Charlotte (AHL) in Game 3 of the Checkers’ second-round series against Lehigh Valley on May 8, 2018.

Brendan Budy Left Wing (84) Camp Invitee

Budy captained the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2017-18, leading the team in goals (22), assists (34) and points (56) while playing in 49 games. He finished tied for fourth in the BCHL in power play goals (10), and during the playoffs he posted five points (2g, 3a) in six games. He is committed to play for the University of Denver beginning this fall.

Theo Calvas Defenseman (78) Camp Invitee

Calvas appeared in 68 games with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL in 2017-18, registering 23 points (3g, 20a), including four multi-point games. He finished fifth in the OHL and first on the Sting in minutes (103), and he was second on the team in plus/minus (+29). In 12 playoff games, he posted five points (2g, 3a), with one of his two goals coming shorthanded.

David Cotton Center (83) Drafted by CAR in the sixth round, 169th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft

Cotton finished second in scoring for Boston College (Hockey East) during his sophomore campaign, registering 28 points (9g, 19a) and appearing in all 37 games for the Eagles. Cotton recorded a seven-game point streak from Dec. 2, 2017 to Jan. 14, 2018, earning nine points (4g, 5a) during that span. He tallied six multi-point games in 2017-18, including a four-point effort (1g, 3a) in a 4-4 tie against Harvard on Nov. 24.

Mario Culina Goaltender (90) Camp Invitee

Culina appeared in 30 regular-season OHL games in 2017-18, including 10 with Sudbury and 20 with Kitchener. Culina posted a 15-11-2 record with two shutouts, a 2.89 GAA and .913 save percentage last season. In the playoffs, he played in all 19 of Kitchener’s games, posting a 11-7 record with a 2.79 GAA and .917 save percentage. He posted back-to-back shutouts against Niagara (Jan. 17, 2018) and Erie (Jan. 19, 2018), making a combined 70 saves, and recorded his first career playoff shutout with a 24-save effort in Game 3 of the OHL Western Conference Finals against Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2018.

Brendan De Jong Defenseman (62) Drafted by CAR in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

De Jong registered 25 points (6g, 19a) in 68 games with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks in 2017-18. After scoring just two goals in his first 58 games of the season, he scored four goals in his final 10 games of the year. De Jong registered a career-long four-game point and assist streak from Dec. 27-31, 2017, with seven assists during that span.

Jack Drury Center (72) Drafted by CAR in the second round, 42nd overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Drury captained the of the USHL in 2017-18, leading the Black Hawks and finishing fourth in the USHL in scoring with 65 points (24g, 41a) in 56 games. He is the son of former NHLer and the nephew of U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer , and he is committed to play at Harvard in the fall.

Mitch Eliot Defenseman (82) Camp Invitee

Eliot skated in 16 games with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL in 2017-18, posting three points (2g, 1a) and adding three assists in 12 playoff games. He played the 2016-17 season and the first half of 2017-18 with Michigan State (Big Ten), appearing in 61 games over two years with eight points (2g, 6a). His father, Darren Eliot, spent parts of five seasons as a goalie in the NHL from 1984-89, playing for Los Angeles, Detroit and Buffalo.

Matt Filipe Center (47) Drafted by CAR in the third round, 67th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Filipe played 31 games in his sophomore season with Northeastern (Hockey East), scoring five goals and adding eight assists for 13 points in 2017-18. He helped the Huskies capture their first Beanpot title since 1988, and he was held without a shot on goal in just four games all season. In his freshman season (2016- 17), Filipe appeared in all 38 games for the Huskies, with nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points.

Michael Fora Defenseman (26) Signed by CAR as a free agent on June 14, 2018

Fora completed his third full season with HC Ambri-Piotta of the top-Swiss league, NLA, in 2017-18, ranking 11th among defensemen in scoring with 27 points (6g, 21a) in 50 games played. He joined his country’s national team following the season, and played in all 10 tournament games as Switzerland advanced to the gold medal game of the 2018 IIHF World Championship before falling to Sweden in a shootout.

Adam Fox Defenseman (32) Acquired via trade with Calgary on June 23, 2018

Fox completed his sophomore season at Harvard in 2017-18, recording 28 points (6g, 22a), and was named a First Team All-American for the second consecutive year. As a freshman in 2016-17, he led all NCAA defensemen in scoring with 40 points (6g, 34a), and was named ECAC and Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Originally drafted by the Flames in third round, 66th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft, Fox appeared in back- to-back IIHF World Junior Championships with Team USA, winning gold in 2017 and bronze in 2018.

Morgan Geekie Center (45) Drafted by CAR in the third round, 67th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Geekie led the WHL’s Tri-City Americans in scoring, notching 30 goals and 54 assists for 84 points in 68 games during the 2017-18 season, marking the second consecutive year that he both scored 30 goals and led Tri-City in points. In the 2018 WHL Playoffs, he led the league with 17 goals in 14 games, as the Americans advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2012. He was named the WHL Player of the Month for March, after putting up 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points during the month.

Gordie Green Right Wing (61) Camp Invitee

Greeg registered 33 points (15g, 18a) in 37 games with Miami (Ohio) of the NCHC last season. His goal and point totals led the RedHawks, and he also led the team in plus/minus (+8). He was named NCHC Player of the Week on Oct. 23, 2017 and NCAA First Star of the week on Oct. 24, 2017 after putting up seven points (2g, 5a) in a weekend split at Maine. He appeared in all 36 games as a freshman in 2016-17, putting up eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points.

Jeremy Helvig Goaltender (50) Drafted by CAR in the fifth round, 134th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Helvig appeared in 56 games for the OHL’s in the 2017-18 season, recording a new career-high in wins with 31, while posting a 2.68 GAA and .916 save percentage with two shutouts. He posted at least 30 saves on 26 occasions last season, including a career-high 49 saves in a 4-3 shootout loss at Hamilton on Oct. 14, 2017. He went 9-7 with a 3.06 GAA and .909 save percentage in the playoffs, backstopping the Frontenacs to the OHL Eastern Conference Finals, which marked the first time Kingston had advanced that far in the playoffs since 1993.

Luke Henman Center (52) Drafted by CAR in the fourth round, 96th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Henman appeared in 61 games with Blainville-Boisbriand of the QMJHL in his first full season of major junior in 2017-18, recording 47 points (9g, 38a). Henman also posted 14 points (6g, 8a) in 20 playoff games last season, including an eight-game point streak to open the postseason, with 10 points (3g, 7a) during that stretch.

Lenni Killinen Right Wing (54) Drafted by CAR in the fourth round, 104th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Killinen spent the majority of the 2017-18 season with Blues U20 of the Jr. A SM-, posting 41 points (13g, 28a) in 28 games. He also played ten games with Espoo United in Finland’s second division (), registering four points (2g, 2a). Killinen also represented Finland at the 2018 IIHF World U18 Championship, appearing in seven games and winning a gold medal.

Jake Kucharski Goaltender (40) Drafted by CAR in the seventh round, 197th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Kucharski played 26 games with Des Moines of the USHL in 2017-18, posting a record of 8-13-2 along with a 3.56 goals-against average and .881 save percentage. In the 2016-17 season, he appeared in 34 games for the Austin Bruins of the NAHL, going 13-13-4 with a 3.31 GAA and .894 save percentage. Kucharski is committed to Providence College.

Jack LaFontaine Goaltender (80) Drafted by CAR in the third round, 75th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

LaFontaine made 11 appearances as a sophomore with Michigan (Big Ten) in 2017-18, posting a 4-4-0 record with a 3.51 GAA and .889 save percentage. He recorded 40 or more saves four times in 22 career collegiate appearances, most recently stopping 49 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss at Penn State on Oct. 27, 2017. He spent the 2015-16 season with the NAHL’s Janesville Jets, posting a 24-8-7 record in 41 games, finishing fifth in the league in GAA (2.16), ninth in save percentage (.921) and tied for third in shutouts (4).

Eetu Luostarinen Center (43) Drafted by CAR in the second round, 42nd overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Luostarinen played 55 games for KalPa (Liiga) in 2017-18, scoring six goals and adding 14 assists for 20 points in his second season in Finland’s top league. He has played a total of 87 regular season games and 23 playoff games in two seasons with KalPa, with 27 career regular season points (9g, 18a) and six career playoff points (2g, 4a). He led the team in penalty minutes last season with 58.

Luke Martin Defenseman (39) Drafted by CAR in the second round, 52nd overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Martin recorded one goal and seven assists for eight points in 40 games in his sophomore season with Michigan of the Big Ten in 2017-18, helping the Wolverines reach the Frozen Four for the first time since 2011. He has led Michigan in blocked shots in both of his collegiate seasons, with 67 in 2017-18 and 76 in 2016-17, and he was named an alternate captain for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

Stelio Mattheos Right Wing (51) Drafted by CAR in the third round, 73rd overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Mattheos played 68 games with Brandon of the WHL in 2017-18, finishing second on the team in goals (43), assists (47) and points (90). He was named WHL and CHL Player of the Week on Dec. 10, 2017 after recording nine points in three games (3g, 6a). He had 29 multi-point games in 2017-18 and scored three or more points 12 times. His 10 game-winning goals last season ranked tied for second in the WHL, and he scored his first playoff GWG in a 5-4 win over Lethbridge on April 10, 2018. He finished the 2018 playoffs with six goals and six assists for 12 points in 11 games.

Martin Necas Center (88) Drafted by CAR in the first round, 12th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Necas led all junior-aged players in the Czech Extraliga with nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in 24 games with HC Kometa Brno. He scored four goals and added five assists for nine points in 14 playoff games, helping HC Kometa Brno win their second consecutive championship. He won Rookie of the Year in the Extraliga in 2016-17, with 15 points (7g, 8a) in 41 games. Necas played for the Czech Republic at both the IIHF World Junior Championship and the IIHF World Championship in 2018, tying for the tournament lead at World Juniors with three goals and eight assists for 11 points in seven games.

Ville Rasanen Defenseman (77) Drafted by CAR in the seventh round, 197th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft

Rasanen appeared in 28 games for Jukurit’s U20 team in the Jr. A SM-liiga (Finland) in 2017-18, registering six assists. He also played nine games in Finland’s second division, Mestis, playing on loan for RoKi and posting a goal and two assists for three points, and he made his Liiga debut with Jukurit, playing four games last season.

Jesper Sellgren Defenseman (56) Drafted by CAR in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Sellgren spent the majority of the 2017-18 season with Modo in Sweden’s second division (Allsvenskan), recording 12 points (3g, 9a) in 43 games. In the 2016-17 season, he played 50 games for Modo, posting 10 points (5g, 5a). Sellgren won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, appearing in seven games with one assist.

Luke Stevens Left Wing (67) Drafted by CAR in the fifth round, 126th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft

Stevens posted six goals and five assists for 11 points in his sophomore season with Yale of the ECAC in 2017-18 while appearing in 30 of the Bulldogs’ 31 games. He had two multi-point games last season, with a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win at Harvard on Nov. 3, 2017, and a two-assist night in a 5-3 win at Union on Dec. 2, 2017. While playing prep hockey at Noble and Greenough, he was a three-time Independent School League All-Star.

Andrei Svechnikov Right Wing (37) Drafted by CAR in the first round, 2nd overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft

Svechnikov scored 40 goals and added 32 assists for 72 points in 44 games with Barrie (OHL) last season, winning OHL Rookie of the Year and the CHL’s Top Prospect Award after being named OHL Rookie of the Month four out of the six times the award was handed out in 2017-18. He finished the regular season with a 23-game point streak where he produced at two-points-per-game pace, with 24 goals and 22 assists for 46 points. He was held without a point in six games all season and had 24 multi-point games. In 2016-17, he won USHL Rookie of the Year, putting up 29 goals and 29 assists for 58 points in 48 games with Muskegon.

Alex Whelan Right Wing (81) Camp Invitee

Whelan led Quinnipiac (ECAC) in goals with 16 in the 2017-18 season, adding three assists for 19 points while appearing all 38 games for the Bobcats. He averaged 4.61 shots on goal per game, good for fourth in the NCAA, and he recorded at least five shots on goal 24 times last season. Quinnipiac went 9-4-2 when he scored a goal in 2017-18, opposed to 7-14-2 when he was held without a goal. He had a four-game goal- scoring streak from Jan. 19 to Feb. 2, 2018.

Max Zimmer Left Wing (41) Drafted by CAR in the fourth round, 104th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

Zimmer scored three goals and added four assists for seven points in his sophomore season with Wisconsin (Big Ten) in 2017-18, appearing in 25 games without taking a penalty. He had a three-point weekend with a goal and two assists when the Badgers hosted Penn State on Jan. 26-27, 2018, and he was held without a shot on goal just four times last season. He played in the 2015 for Team USA, helping the Americans win bronze with a tournament-high five goals in five games.
