CAROLINA HURRICANES 2018 DEVELOPMENT CAMP GUIDE PNC Arena • Raleigh, NC • June 26 – June 30 RALEIGH, NC – The Carolina Hurricanes will host their 2018 Prospect Development Camp from June 26 to June 30, 2018. Players will go through off-ice training and educational sessions during the week, as well as on-ice sessions at PNC Arena. Attendees include Hurricanes prospects who are under contract and recent Hurricanes draft picks who have not yet signed. In addition, several undrafted and free agent amateur players will be in attendance. All on-ice sessions are open to the public and media. Players will be available to the media at the conclusion of the final on- ice session each day. The full on-ice schedule can be found below. Welcome to Raleigh – All six Hurricanes selections from the 2018 NHL Draft will attend this year’s development camp. Carolina selected right wing Andrei Svechnikov (Barrie, OHL) second overall, center Jack Drury (Waterloo, USHL) 42nd overall, center Luke Henman (Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL) 96th overall, right wing Lenni Killinen (Blues U20, Finland-jr) 104th overall, defenseman Jesper Sellgren (Modo, Sweden-2) 166th overall and goaltender Jake Kucharski (Des Moines, USHL) 197th overall. Svechnikov at Second – Right wing Andrei Svechnikov, taken second overall by the Hurricanes at this year’s draft, recorded 72 points (40g, 32a) in 44 games with Barrie (OHL) last season, and won both OHL Rookie of the Year and the CHL Top Prospect Award. His 0.91 goals per game led the league, and he was the only rookie in the OHL to reach the 40- goal mark. The Barnaul, Russia, native is only the eighth Russian in NHL history to be taken in the top two of the draft, and the first since Edmonton selected Nail Yakupov first overall in 2012. Svechnikov is the first Russian player drafted by Carolina since the Hurricanes took Igor Knyazev in the first round of the 2001 NHL Draft (15th overall). World Juniors – Five players attending this year’s development camp represented their countries at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship (WJC) in Buffalo. Defenseman Jake Bean had three assists in seven games in his second straight appearance at the tournament for Canada, winning a gold medal in 2018 and a silver medal in 2017. Newly acquired Carolina Hurricanes 2018 Development Camp Guide defenseman Adam Fox played in his second straight WJC with Team USA, winning gold in 2017 and bronze while serving as an alternate captain in 2018. Center Martin Necas made his second consecutive appearance at the tournament for the Czech Republic, tying for the tournament lead in points (11) and leading in assists (8). Necas recorded at least one point in all seven games played at the 2018 WJC. Right wing Andrei Svechnikov made his WJC debut for Russia, posting five assists in five games. Making the Jump – Four attendees from the Hurricanes’ 2017 Development Camp went on to make their NHL debut with Carolina in 2017-18 (Warren Foegele, Janne Koukkanen, Martin Necas and Nicolas Roy). Eight players from last year’s camp appeared in at least one game with Charlotte (AHL) in 2017-18 (Jake Bean, Callum Booth, Foegele, Julien Gauthier, Kuokkanen, Steven Lorentz, Roy and Nick Schilkey), while three attendees played at least one game with Carolina’s ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades (Booth, Lorentz, Spencer Smallman). Starting Point – Out of the 31 players who appeared in at least one game with Carolina in 2017-18, 20 of them attended at least one Hurricanes Development Camp: Sebastian Aho (2015), Trevor Carrick (2013-14), Phillip Di Giuseppe (2012- 14), Justin Faulk (2010), Haydn Fleury (2014-16), Warren Foegele (2014-17), Noah Hanifin (2015), Janne Kuokkanen (2016-17), Elias Lindholm (2013), Brock McGinn (2012-14), Roland McKeown (2015-16), Martin Necas (2017), Brett Pesce (2013-15), Victor Rask (2013), Nicolas Roy (2015-17), Jeff Skinner (2010), Jaccob Slavin (2012, 2014), Lucas Wallmark (2014), Cam Ward (2002) and Valentin Zykov (2016). Wild West – Right wing Stelio Mattheos, picked 73rd overall by the Hurricanes in 2017, registered 90 points (43g, 47a) in 68 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), finishing second on his team in scoring. Mattheos tied for second in the WHL in game-winning goals with 10, and he had 29 multi-point performances. Center Morgan Geekie, taken 67 th overall in 2017, led the Tri-City Americans in points (84) for the second straight season (30g, 54a). Geekie’s teammate with the Americans, defenseman Jake Bean, was Carolina’s first-round pick in 2016 (13 th overall). Bean tied for the team lead in postseason assists, with 17 in 14 games, as Tri-City advanced to the conference finals for the first time in six years. Earning a Spot – Forward Nick Schilkey attended last year’s development camp on an invite and signed a one-year AHL contract with Charlotte four days after the conclusion of camp. Schilkey, who played four seasons of college hockey at Ohio State, re-signed with the Checkers on June 1, 2018. Shoot Your Shot – Camp invitee Alex Whelan, who plays for Quinnipiac, finished fourth in the NCAA in shots on goal per game (4.61) in 2017-18 and scored a team-high 16 goals. Whelan registered 175 shots in 38 games last season and recorded five or more shots 24 times. Age Gap – Newly acquired defenseman Michael Fora is the oldest attendee of this year’s camp (born October 30, 1995). The youngest player is Lenni Killinen (born June 15, 2000). Carolina Hurricanes 2018 Development Camp Guide Player Bios Jake Bean Defenseman (24) Drafted by CAR in the first round, 13th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft Bean registered 48 points (12g, 36a) in 57 WHL regular-season games split between Calgary and Tri-City in 2017-18. In 14 playoff games with Tri-City, Bean tied for the team lead in assists (17), including a five- assist performance on April 10, 2018 against Victoria. He was named WHL and CHL Player of the Week on April 15, 2018, after recording eight assists in two games. Bean represented Team Canada at both the 2017 (Silver) and 2018 (Gold) IIHF World Junior Championship, and he made his pro debut with Charlotte (AHL) in Game 3 of the Checkers’ second-round series against Lehigh Valley on May 8, 2018. Brendan Budy Left Wing (84) Camp Invitee Budy captained the Langley Rivermen of the British Columbia Hockey League in 2017-18, leading the team in goals (22), assists (34) and points (56) while playing in 49 games. He finished tied for fourth in the BCHL in power play goals (10), and during the playoffs he posted five points (2g, 3a) in six games. He is committed to play for the University of Denver beginning this fall. Theo Calvas Defenseman (78) Camp Invitee Calvas appeared in 68 games with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL in 2017-18, registering 23 points (3g, 20a), including four multi-point games. He finished fifth in the OHL and first on the Sting in penalty minutes (103), and he was second on the team in plus/minus (+29). In 12 playoff games, he posted five points (2g, 3a), with one of his two goals coming shorthanded. David Cotton Center (83) Drafted by CAR in the sixth round, 169th overall, in the 2015 NHL Draft Cotton finished second in scoring for Boston College (Hockey East) during his sophomore campaign, registering 28 points (9g, 19a) and appearing in all 37 games for the Eagles. Cotton recorded a seven-game point streak from Dec. 2, 2017 to Jan. 14, 2018, earning nine points (4g, 5a) during that span. He tallied six multi-point games in 2017-18, including a four-point effort (1g, 3a) in a 4-4 tie against Harvard on Nov. 24. Mario Culina Goaltender (90) Camp Invitee Culina appeared in 30 regular-season OHL games in 2017-18, including 10 with Sudbury and 20 with Kitchener. Culina posted a 15-11-2 record with two shutouts, a 2.89 GAA and .913 save percentage last season. In the playoffs, he played in all 19 of Kitchener’s games, posting a 11-7 record with a 2.79 GAA and .917 save percentage. He posted back-to-back shutouts against Niagara (Jan. 17, 2018) and Erie (Jan. 19, 2018), making a combined 70 saves, and recorded his first career playoff shutout with a 24-save effort in Game 3 of the OHL Western Conference Finals against Sault Ste. Marie on April 23, 2018. Carolina Hurricanes 2018 Development Camp Guide Brendan De Jong Defenseman (62) Drafted by CAR in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2017 NHL Draft De Jong registered 25 points (6g, 19a) in 68 games with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks in 2017-18.
