TONIGHT’S GAME

The Flyers start a four-game road swing tonight as they visit the New York Rangers in their 26th game of the year and 12th on the road. The Flyers are 13-9-3 on the year after a 5-4 loss to Washington on Saturday night, which stretched a downturn that has seen the club drop four of its last five contests. This is the first game of a stretch where the Flyers play their next eight games against the three New York metro teams – four against the Rangers, three against the Islanders and one against the Devils. The Flyers are back here on Wednesday night before hopping out to Long Island for a pair of games against the Islanders on Thursday and Saturday.

FLYERS VS. RANGERS

This is the third of eight games between the teams this season and is Philadelphia’s first visit of the season to Madison Square Garden. The clubs will knock out four of their remaining six games over the next 12 days.

The Flyers and Rangers have a somewhat extensive history of large season series. This is the sixth time the two teams will meet eight times in a season – they did so in 1978-79 and 1981-82, and again in three consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2007-08. They also faced one another seven times a year for the decade-long Patrick Division alignment from 1982-83 through 1992-93 that also saw them take on several other teams seven times per season.

Last year the clubs only met three times due to the final meeting being cancelled by the COVID stoppage. That was the first time since the Flyers joined the league in 1967 that the two clubs had met fewer than four times in a season.

The Flyers are 10-2-1 against the Rangers over the past three seasons, plus this year’s first two meetings, after recording a perfect 3-0 record last year. It was only the second time in franchise history they had a 1.000 points percentage in a given season against the Rangers, joining the 1984-85 team that went 7-0 in the season series. It was also the first time since a 4-0-0-1 season series in 2000-01 that they did not record at least one regulation loss to the Blueshirts.

SEASON SERIES

Thursday, February 18, 2021 – NY Rangers 3, Flyers 2 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Joel Farabee tied the game during a goalmouth scramble with 1:14 to play, but the Rangers took the shootout and the extra point in the first meeting of the season between the teams. Nicolas Aube-Kubel opened the scoring just 59 seconds into the contest, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead that held until Chad Blackwell tipped home a shot on the power play 3:24 into the second. Brendan Smith put the Rangers ahead 8:21 into the third period, but with an extra attacker on in the waning minutes, the Flyers forced overtime when Farabee pushed a puck over the line. Artemi Panarin and Kappo Kakko tallied in the shootout for the Rangers, while Sean Couturier was the only one of three Flyers shooters to beat Aleksander Georgiev after the netminder made 20 saves in regulation and overtime. Carter Hart took the SOL with 31 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Artemi Panarin; 2 – Joel Farabee; 3 – Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 – Flyers 4, NY Rangers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: A strong start paced the Flyers to a first-intermission lead and they were able to hold off the Rangers the rest of the way to take the one-goal victory. Erik Gustafsson started off the scoring 7:48 into the first period off an assist from Shayne Gostisbehere; after the Rangers tied it on a power play goal by Chris Kreider less than two minutes later, Gustafsson returned the favor when he set up Gostisbehere for a power play goal with 4:29 left in the period. James van Riemsdyk potted a power play goal 4:05 into the second, but it was matched by Kreider almost exactly four minutes later. Kevin Hayes then picked up the eventual game-winner with 5:23 left in the second period, making it 4-2 at the second intermission. Kreider completed the hat trick 3:27 into the third, but it was the last puck Brian Elliott would let by as he took the win with 24 saves. Igor Shesterkin made 35 saves in the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Chris Kreider; 3 – Shayne Gostisbehere.

LAST GAME

Saturday, March 13, 2021 – Washington 5, Flyers 4 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers mounted a late comeback attempt for a second consecutive game but had the same unfortunate outcome, this time in a 5-4 setback to the Caps. Washington scored twice in the opening period to take a 2-0 first- intermission lead, getting goals from Daniel Sprong 4:40 into the game and from with 6:39 left before the break. The teams see-sawed from there, trading goals throughout the second period – James van Riemsdyk scored 2:36 into the frame but saw that answered by Nick Jensen just 29 seconds later, and then a goal from Nolan Patrick at the 5:47 mark was offset by one from Alex Ovechkin on the power play with 6:50 left before the break. Nic Dowd scored the eventual game-winner 4:25 into the third, making it 5-2; the Flyers clawed within a goal on a power play tally from Shayne Gostisbehere with 6:53 left followed by an extra-attacker goal from Claude Giroux with 2:57 to play, but they could not quite find the equalizer. Brian Elliott started and made seven saves on 10 shots in 23:05 before stepping aside for Carter Hart, who was assessed the loss after making 11 saves on 13 shots over 33:40 of play. Ilya Samsonov earned the win with 28 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Alex Ovechkin; 2 – Nic Dowd; 3 – James van Riemsdyk.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers have played seven games of 17 scheduled in the month of March, and the friction point for the team has been the first period of games. They have been outscored 12-5 in the first period over that timeframe, with the 12 GA being the most allowed by any team in the league. They had outscored their opponents 17-12 in the first period of the first 18 games of the season before then.

The Flyers have risen to third overall in team faceoff percentage in the NHL at 53.6 percent. They were 18th in the league on Feb. 23 after their first 15 games at 50.2 percent, but since then they have gone 58.7 percent over a nine-game stretch, which is best in the league by nearly three full points during that timeframe.

Joel Farabee is second on the roster with 11 goals. All of them, however, are at even strength, which ties him for second in the league in that category.

James van Riemsdyk leads the team with 12 goals and 28 points in 25 games. His 1.12 point-per-game average is a career-best pace; his current career high for a full season is 0.76 points per game, done twice with Toronto.

Scott Laughton has seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 22 games. He is picking up where he left off last season, where he had 27 points in 49 games and was five short of his career high of 32 over a full 82-game season when the 2019-20 campaign was paused last March.

Claude Giroux and Scott Laughton have led the charge for the Flyers in that timeframe. After going 56.5 percent on draws over his first 13 games, the Flyers captain has jumped to 66.2 percent in his last 10 games, going 102 for 154. Laughton is at 67.3 percent in that timeframe (37 for 55), which for him covers nine games. Since Feb. 23, the two are first and third in the NHL among 133 players who have taken at least 50 faceoffs.

The Flyers have had at least 32 shots in nine of their last 10 games. During that timeframe, which dates back to February 24, they are second in the league with 35.0 shots per game behind only Colorado. From the start of the season through Feb. 23, the Flyers were last in the league by more than a three-shot margin with an average of just 23.3 shots per game.
