She has subsequently worked in many roles in many branches of astronomy, working part-time while raising a family . She is now a Visiting Academic in Oxford, and the Chancellor of the University of Dundee, Scotland . She has been President of the UK’s Royal Astronomical Society; in 2008 became the first female President of the for the UK and ; and in 2014 became the first female President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . She was also one of the small group of women scientists who set up the Athena SWAN scheme . She has received many honors, including a $3M in 2018 . The public appreciation and understanding of science have always been important to her, and she is much in demand as a speaker and broadcaster . In her spare time, she gardens, listens to choral music, and is an active Quaker . She has also co-edited an anthology of poetry with an astronomical theme, Dark Matter; Poems of Space .

STUDENT SPEAKER Hsar Ree Ree Wei ’21 was born on the border of Burma and Thailand and has first hand experience of refugee migration and resettlements . With this experience, Ree Ree is passionate about immigration justice and committed to continue to advocate for the well-being of the community on a personal and institutional level . Majoring in Community and Justice Studies with a minor in Forced Migration and Resettlement Studies, she has learned the forms of oppression and ways to empower community members to use their voice . After graduation, Ree Ree will continue to work for Transplanting Traditions Community Farm as a Business Development Coordinator who conducts community assessments and determines what the needs are for the immigrant community .

ALGERNON SYDNEY SULLIVAN AWARD RECIPIENTS Moe Reh ’21, originally from Myanmar (Burma), grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand . In 2012 at the age of 14, he moved with his family to the U .S . and attended the Newcomers School where he learned American culture and the English language . About 18 months after his arrival in the U .S ., Moe auditioned for the Weaver Academy, an arts magnet high school . He was accepted and studied classical guitar his sophomore through senior years . Upon graduation, he attended Guilford College, where he was a double major in Education Studies and Music with the special honor of being a Bonner Scholar . Moe’s life came full circle when he started working at Newcomers School with immigrant and new-arrival families . His passion is teaching and mentoring children, and he says that his work within the Triad has offered him great insight into the needs of his community as well as his ability to give back through his musical gifts . This fall, Moe will attend UNC School of the Arts on a full scholarship . He also plans to teach part-time at Moore Music Company in Greensboro while directing music at his church . He says his time at Guilford has shaped him into the man he is today, and he is grateful for his time at the College .

Mike Weaver and his father, Herman Weaver, established the Weaver Foundation in 1967 to help enhance the quality of life and economic environment for citizens of the greater Greensboro community while developing a sense of philanthropy, civic education and commitment in current and future generations of the founders’ family . To date, the Foundation has invested in more than 500 organizations that are actively seeking to make positive change in the community, including Guilford College . More information about the foundation is available at weaverfoundation .com . ACADEMIC REGALIA The custom of wearing caps, gowns and hoods at college functions dates to the Middle Ages . In 1895, a commission of American educational institutions met to craft a uniform code of academic regalia that is still in use today . As a Quaker-founded institution, Guilford recognizes that some individuals may choose not to wear regalia as a matter of personal conscience . The style and color of cap, gown and hood indicate both the level of the wearer’s education and his or her field of study . The bachelor’s degree recipient wears an unadorned, straight gown with long, pointed sleeves . The master’s degree recipient wears a similar robe with shorter, less full sleeves . The doctorate-level robe is most elaborate, with velvet panels adorning the gown’s front and sleeves . The hood’s design is highly symbolic: The colors of its silk lining typically denote the institution granting the degree, its velvet border signifies the degree’s field and the overall size indicates the level of degree (bachelor, master or doctor) . The field of learning, rather than the department that governed the major work, determines the color of the velvet trim color on the hood . For instance, a master of arts wears a hood trimmed with a white border, irrespective of their major field . If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood reflect the highest degree attained . The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows: Anthropology - Dark Blue Engineering - Orange Music - Pink Arts - White English - White Philosophy - Dark Blue Business Administration - Light Brown Fine Arts - Brown Physical Education - Sage Green Communication - Crimson Government - Peacock Blue Political Science - Dark Blue Counseling & Guidance - Light Blue History - White Psychology - Gold Dramatic Arts - Brown Humanities - White Science - Gold Economics - Copper Literature - White Sociology - White Education - Light Blue Library Science - Lemon Theology - Scarlet Mathematics - Gold
