JSNA Health and Wellbeing Profile 2021/22 Crime Summary points • The total recorded crime rate (all crimes) in Bristol for 2020/21 was 101 crimes per 1,000 of the population, significantly lower than the previous year. • 15.7% of Bristol residents said fear of crime affects their day-to-day life, the same as the previous year. All Crime Trend The total number of recorded crimes in Bristol in 2020/21 was 46,821, significantly lower than 2019/20 (53,270), likely as a result of lockdowns related to the pandemic (Figure 1). Violence against the person represented 33% of all recorded crimes in 2020/21 with 15,379 offences, followed by 7,545 ‘theft’ offences (16% of all crime) Figure 1: Number of all recorded crimes in Bristol. All Crime by ward The crime offence rate (all crimes) across Bristol for 2020/21 was 101 per 1,000 of the population. The all crime rate (per 1,000 population) within the wards (see Figure 2) ranged from; Westbury-on-Trym & Henleaze (43.9 per 1,000) and Redland (47.1 per 1,000) to Hotwells & Harbourside (190.7 per 1,000) and Central (234.8 per 1,000). In regard to actual numbers of all crimes by ward, they range from; St. George Troopers Hill (284) and Cotham (574) to Lawrence Hill (3,291) and Central (5,109). When comparing the percentage change from last year, 25 wards experienced decreases in crime whilst 9 experienced an increase. Hotwells and Harbourside had the biggest decrease in crime (-40.3%) followed by Central (-39.9%) whilst Southmead had the biggest increase (13.2%) followed by Hillfields (12.2%). Source: Avon and Somerset Police 2020/21 Violence against the person (VAP) and Hate Crime As the largest contributor to total crime (of all the crime types) VAP consists of a number of categories including murder, manslaughter, assault, threats to kill and harassment. There were 15,379 recorded VAP crimes in 2020/21, a decrease of 4.9% on the previous year, equal to 795 less crimes. Equalities data: Police data for 2020/21 shows an almost equal split between male (48.4%) and female (51.6%) victims. This is Police data where gender is known / recorded. Data is based on a count of victims (i.e not multiple violence against the same person). There were 1,940 recorded hate crimes in 2020/21 a slight increase of 1.3% when compared to the previous year. Over three-quarters of hate crime in 2020/21 was recorded on the basis of racial prejudice (75.6%), followed by sexual orientation (10.2%), disability (5.9%), religion (4.1%) and gender (1.8%). www.bristol.gov.uk/jsna Page | 2 JSNA Health and Wellbeing Profile 2021/22 Theme: Wider Determinants Quality of Life Survey In 2020/21, 15.7% of residents across % residents whose fear of crime affects Bristol said fear of crime affects their day- their day-to-day lives to-day life, the same as the previous year. Nuisance incidents (e.g. rowdy or inconsiderate neighbours) accounted for 90.1% (12,311) of reported ASB. Personal ASB incidents (e.g. vandalism, begging, street drinking) account for 6.3% of incidents and Environmental ASB incidents (e.g. littering, rubbish dumping) account for nearly 3.6% of incidents (Figure 5). Source: Avon and Somerset Within Bristol, the highest level of reported ASB incidents was in Central ward which accounted for 15% (2,048) of all incidents. Lawrence Hill (922) and Hartcliffe & Withywood (793) had the next highest number of incidents whilst the lowest number of incidents were recorded in St George Troopers Hill (89), Redland (120) and Bishopston and Ashley Down (148). Further data / links: • Open data: Crime and Policing in England, Wales and Northern Ireland Covid-19 impact: The pandemic has had a notable effect on trends and pattern of crimes that occur in public spaces and those linked to the night-time economy. There is a correlation with levels of incidents/ crimes and changes to government guidance on social isolation and lockdown arrangements.
