With the growing cooperation of Luther and Northwestern Theological Seminary, he was elected as president of Northwestern in 1976.After some years of Maximal" Functional Unification"he urged merger of the two seminaries. In 1982 the seminaries joined to become Luther Northwestern Theological Seminary. He resigned in 1987 to become president of Augustana College in South Dakota, where he served until 1993. He was elected to the vice -presidency of the in 1981 and served on the committee for the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
