Alvin Luedke Professor of Rural Ministry THE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER STUDENT SPEAKER David Fredrickson is professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary, where he has been teaching since 1987. Peter Johnson He was ordained in 1980 and served as associate pastor Master of Divinity Candidate of St. John Lutheran Church in Janesville, Wisconsin. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from STUDENT MARSHALS and a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Seminary. He then earned Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy Jaime Benson degrees from before finishing work on his Master of Divinity Student Ph.D. in 1990. Frederickson is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and has published several articles, Seth Biwul including “Human Sexuality and the Christian Faith,” “Three Master of Arts Student Objections to Hamerton—Kelly’s Interpretation of the Eric Miller Pauline Epistles,” “Free Speech in Pauline Political ,” “Reading the New Testament,” and “Pentecost: Paul the Master of Divinity Student Pastor in 2 Corinthians.” Esther Sianipar Master of Arts Student THE STUDENT SPEAKER FACULTY MARSHAL Master of Divinity candidate Peter Johnson is a mission developer in the ELCA who formerly planted and served Kathryn Schifferdecker at Chicken Coop Church, a rural church plant in the Associate Professor of north woods of Wisconsin. Growing up experiencing economic poverty in rural Wisconsin and working as a road ORGANIST construction foreman and in other blue-collar positions, Mark Ertl Johnson is now pursuing his calling to ministry with ELCA ordination through Luther Seminary and assignment to the Luther Seminary Chapel Musician Minneapolis Area Synod. As a parent of a child with hearing loss, Johnson has grown in relationships and ministry CRUCIFER opportunities at Bread of Life Deaf Lutheran Church in Garth Englund Minneapolis, the Treacher Collins syndrome community, and the deaf and hard of hearing community. AWARDS FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Each year, several awards for excellence are given to students. The awards given this year are:

The Graduate Preaching Fellowship is given to an outstanding Master of Divinity degree graduate from the senior class. The fellowship provides financing for recipients to study preaching outside the to enhance their career in preaching and parish ministry.

The Children, Youth, and Family Prize is given annually to one or more students who demonstrate excellence in reflecting theologically, culturally, and pragmatically on the practice of children, youth, young adult, or family ministries.

The Frederick Buechner Prize for Excellence in Preaching is given to an outstanding Master of Divinity graduate. It is intended to help bring the words, ideas, and works of Frederick Buechner to a new generation of clergy, with a particular emphasis on enhancing preaching and writing.

The John Milton Prize in Old Testament is awarded to one or more students based on papers written by graduating Master of Divinity or Master of Arts students in the area of Old Testament.
