These programs are subject to change. The information here is in no way binding upon LSTC. Rules, regulations, and academic procedures of the seminary are briefly described. Each has distinctive delights and concerns, ideas about what to retain or improve. I was surprised this year when one of our new students asked what gives me joy and hope. No one ever asked that before. Though at rst thrown by the question’s candor, there was no hesitation in my answer. “Students,” I quickly replied. “It’s you who ll me with joy and hope.” Maybe that’s just the kind of corny response you’d expect from someone like me, but at our seminary, I am not alone in saying that students impel what we do. Sometimes, one’s day is consumed with the ordinary tasks of keeping a school running. We monitor nances, grade assignments, maintain records, repair facilities, seek donations, and so forth—stu that surely fails to inspire. But these are only partial activities, penultimate tasks. What truly excites us are people like you discerning afresh whether some form of ministry is right for you. You come to us with diverse lives, remarkable experiences, amazing stories, inventive plans. In a world where many are cynical and disheartened about the church and the power of the gospel, you show calm condence there is still something worthy of pouring out your life. That’s astonishing—and it lls us with joy and hope. As you read this catalogue and review your choices, I hope you’ll consider how the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is a distinctive place for your formation to ourish. We’re not yesterday’s school attuned to bygone days. Instead, we form leaders called into the world, bearing witness to the good news of Jesus Christ in many di erent ways. That involves risk—and if you want to join in that venture, we could be the place for you. Vision LSTC seeks to build up the Body of Christ and work for a world of peace and justice that cares for the whole creation. Values LSTC is • Christ-centered—Strives by God’s grace to follow Christ’s call to loving service. • Responsive to context—Embraces its diverse urban setting and exciting academic environment that enable learning from and ministering to the community. Welcoming Statement LSTC strives to offer a community and academic experience that is grounded in the good news of the gospel and shaped by our urban, multicultural, ecumenical, global, interfaith and university-related context and commitments. Our primary mission is to prepare women and men for a complex, pluralistic world in need of faithful and courageous ministers to serve in a variety of contexts. Although a large percentage of students come to LSTC to prepare for ordained or lay rostered ministries in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, LSTC is also enriched and transformed by ecumenical and interfaith students in our various master’s and doctoral programs, as well as ecumenical and interfaith colleagues. As a Reconciling in Christ seminary, LSTC seeks to offer hospitality and welcome to all who enter LSTC’s academic programs. Following Jesus Christ, whose reconciling love bridged barriers and made strangers friends, we seek to welcome and learn from one another’s particularity—including but not limited to one another’s race, national or ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, physical ability, social status and theological diversity.

By John H. Tietjen. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1990. There is an advantage often in reviewing a book after it has received other reviews. There is also a bit of guilt involved in procrastinating so long. In the present case I am glad, because the reviews I have read of Dr. John Tietjen's Memoirs have not been kind or fair to him nor empathetic to his struggles and situation; and, with the exception of a review by Leigh Jordahl, they have shown little understanding of what was happening before, during, and after his tumultuous administration as president of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. With this review I wish to give John Tietjen and his many colleagues, friends, and followers a fairer hearing and a fairer commentary on his memoirs. I am well qualified to do this because I was his colleague and next-door neighbor while he led the seminary and because I know the background and all the principals, all the issues and events of those turbulent years (1969-1974) which changed more than most realize-ar might care to admit-the LCMS and the lives of Tietjen and all of us involved.

    Beyond the “Plastic Text”: the Plot Thickens John Warwick Montgomery Abstract: A new approach to textual criticism is being advocated by a New Testament professor at the Concordia Seminary, St Louis, one of the two theological centers for the training of pastors in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). It is the conviction of the present essayist that this approach amounts to the destruction of the denomination’s commitment to scriptural inerrancy; returns biblical scholarship to the subjectivism of the higher criticism; and, if pursued, could cause that conservative church body to face again the theological difficulties that came close to destroying the LCMS in the Seminex controversy of the 1970’s. Readers may well recall my critique of Jeffrey Kloha’s “plastic text” essay.1 I have learned (unofficially) that church authorities have met with Dr. Kloha, that he admitted to no doctrinal problems, that the authorities agreed, but that a revised version of his essay was to be prepared. Almost a year has passed, but that revised version—if in fact prepared—does not seem to have been made available to the general or to the scholarly public. The seriousness of the issues involved for the historic doctrine of the inerrancy of the Holy Scriptures therefore requires additional, though brief, examination of Dr. Kloha’s biblical orientation. This will focus on his contribution to the Festschrift for his mentor, Professor J. Keith Elliott,2 with additional comments on Kloha’s “plastic text” essay and a reaction to his paper entitled “The Authority of the Scriptures,” delivered at the 2010 Concordia Seminary St.

Kurt Marquart is the author of the Statement of Policy on page 4 of every issue. Trinity has at times been mentioned in Christian News. It began in the basements of Trinity’s parsonage and church. Had it not been for the volunteer work of many informed members of Trinity, it may not have survived (see pages 1,2,6,7,). The publication had its beginning when Marquart and Herman Otten, the future Christian News editor, were roommates at the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod’s Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, during the 1950s. This history is told in the 10 volume Marquart’s Works completed last year by Christian News. During their student years, Marquart and Otten opposed some liberal faculty members, who denied the inerrancy of the Bible, the historicity of Genesis and Jonah, the immortality of the soul, the vicarious satisfaction of Christ, direct messianic prophecy, and other scriptural doctrines. The liberal professors promoted such destructive notions of higher criticism as the J-E-D-P source hypothesis, Deutero Isaiah, etc. Since the liberals still claimed to be faithful to the Lutheran confessions, Marquart and Otten recognized the need for a 20th Century Formula of Concord, which reaffirms the ancient creeds of Christendom and the Book of Concord of 1580 but also speaks to the issues of the day: evolution, higher criticism, abortion, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, etc.
