It again represents the wide range of “Septuagint and Cognate Studies”. It opens with the study by Jannes Smith, “The Text-Critical Significance of Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 5101 (Ra 2227) for the Old Greek Psalter” on a manuscript which was published in 2011 and which is most probably the oldest manuscript of the Greek Psalms which we have to date. Not so much a new manscript but rather a manuscript in a manuscript is analysed by Ken M. Penner, “Codex Sinaiticus Corrector Cb2 as a Witness to the Alexandrian Text of Isaiah”. This corrector evidently used a manuscript which, though no longer extant, belongs to the most important witnesses of the book of Isaiah and deserves attention, not just for the book of Isaiah. Jan Joosten, “A syntactic Aramaism in the Septuagint: ἰδού in temporal expressions” continues his studies on the Aramaic background of the Septuagint translators, and shows that it exerted its influence not only on semantics but also on the syntax. There follow studies of specific texts: Larry Perkins, “The Order of Pro- nominal Clitics and Other Pronouns in Greek Exodus – An Indicator of the Translator’s Intentionality” carefully analyses a specific grammatical feature in the book of Exodus. James Mulroney, “Rethinking Hab 1:12 in Light of Translation Style and the Literary Character Ambakoum” discusses the verse mentioned in the title but also several other verses, and draws conclusions about the intentions of the translator. Herbert Migsch, “Die griechischen Les- arten von Jeremia 42LXX, 11 und ihre Vorlage” meticulously discusses the variants of Jonadab ben Rechab’s answer to Jeremiah and its textual history. The articles are concluded by Alex Douglas “Limitations to Writing a Theology of the Septuagint” who takes up the discussion of a theology of the Septuagint and notes the pitfalls that need to be considered. In the dissertation abstract John D. Meade provides information about his work on “The hexaplaric fragments on Job 22-24”. The book reviews cover a wide range of works, both monographs and collected essays or Festschriften, yet only a sample of the apparently ever- growing number of contributions to Septuagint studies. At this point I want to say thank you to the authors and the book reviewers for their contributions to the Journal. I also would like to thank the coeditors 3 4 JSCS 45 (2012) for their support, both in scholarly and in organisational matters, especially to Cécile Dogniez who helped in organising the book review. And, I would like to mention my former assistant Dr. Jonathan Robker and my Wuppertaler Studentische Hilfskräfte, esp. Birte Bernhardt, Christina Kreiskott, and Nick Pioch who at different stages and in different ways helped to get things done. Last but not least I would like to draw readers’attention to two organisational features: 1) IOSCS has made an effort to make available the older issues of the Bulletin on the IOSCS homepage as pdf-files. There are now available all the issues of the Bulletin, starting from issue 1 (1968) (which was reprinted in issue 2) up to 33 (2000). (Some of the more recent issues may still be obtained from Eisenbrauns). 2) Eisenbrauns has made some modifications to the homepage, which make it easier to become a member and to pay the membership subscription. This may be a good opportunity to invite all the readers of the Journal who are not yet members to become members of the “International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies”. Siegfried Kreuzer The Text-Critical Significance of Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 5101 (Ra 2227) for the Old Greek Psalter JANNES SMITH Septuagint scholars interested in the Greek Psalter will doubtless welcome the recent publication of Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 5101, designated as Ra 2227 by the Septuaginta Unternehmen in Göttingen.1 Though relatively short and fragmentary, its editors’ observation that “This is probably the earliest extant copy of the Septuagint Psalms” will be enough to make one sit up and take notice.2 Equally intriguing is the scroll’s use of the Tetragrammaton in paleo- Hebrew characters in place of the usual ku/rioj. This paper offers a descript- tion of the MS and a preliminary assessment of its significance for the text of LXX Psalms.3 P.Oxy. 5101 (hereafter 2227) has four sections of text, labeled A through D, written in six columns, preserving parts of 56 verses of the Greek Psalter. The study was aimed at exploring the psycholinguistic background of Polish students of L3 Spanish. Two groups of students (B1 and B2) were asked to fill out a survey with questions related to proficiency, self-confidence, language identity, usefulness, prestige, stress, sound, and frequency of use. The last part of the survey included some questions about psychotypology, as well. In terms of foreign language anxiety, Spanish was ranked by most of the students as the most stressful language. A follow-up session was carried out with them in order to try to discuss the reasons behind their choices, and their feedback helped to shed some light on the topic and raised further questions about the role and impact of Polish teachers of Spanish in Poland. Keywords: sociolinguistics, stress, foreign language anxiety, L3 Spanish, third language acquisition, multilingual- ism, psychotypology. 1. Introduction The following study was aimed at exploring the psycholinguistic background of Polish students of L3 Spanish from a multilingual point of view. That is why, the study begins with a short sum- mary of the the situation of English both in Europe and, more precisely, in Poland in order to give a general picture of the linguistic situation in which the participants of this study grew up. The next section deals with the impact of positive attitudes on language learning and a short review of Dewaele’s (2010) findings in terms of foreign language anxiety (FLA).

    Notes on Amos 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE AND WRITER The title of the book comes from its writer. The prophet's name means "burden-bearer" or "load-carrier." Of all the 16 Old Testament writing prophets, only Amos recorded what his occupation was before God called him to become a prophet. Amos was a "sheepherder" (Heb. noqed; cf. 2 Kings 3:4) or "sheep breeder," and he described himself as a "herdsman" (Heb. boqer; 7:14). He was more than a shepherd (Heb. ro'ah), though some scholars deny this.1 He evidently owned or managed large herds of sheep, and or goats, and was probably in charge of shepherds. Amos also described himself as a "grower of sycamore figs" (7:14). Sycamore fig trees are not true fig trees, but a variety of the mulberry family, which produces fig-like fruit. Each fruit had to be scratched or pierced to let the juice flow out so the "fig" could ripen. These trees grew in the tropical Jordan Valley, and around the Dead Sea, to a height of 25 to 50 feet, and bore fruit three or four times a year. They did not grow as well in the higher elevations such as Tekoa, Amos' hometown, so the prophet appears to have farmed at a distance from his home, in addition to tending herds. "Tekoa" stood 10 miles south of Jerusalem in Judah. Thus, Amos seems to have been a prosperous and influential Judahite. However, an older view is that Amos was poor, based on Palestinian practices in the nineteenth century.

BROCK UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD [1] The three volumes, entitled The Hidden Pearl. The Syrian Orthodox Church and its Ancient Aramaic Heritage, published by TransWorld Film Italia in 2001, were commisioned to accompany three documentaries. The connecting thread throughout the three millennia that are covered is the Aramaic language with its various dialects, though the emphasis is always on the users of the language, rather than the language itself. Since the documentaries were commissioned by the Syrian Orthodox community, part of the third volume focuses on developments specific to them, but elsewhere the aim has been to be inclusive, not only of the other Syriac Churches, but also of other communities using Aramaic, both in the past and, to some extent at least, in the present. [2] The volumes were written with a non-specialist audience in mind and so there are no footnotes; since, however, some of the inscriptions and manuscripts etc. which are referred to may not always be readily identifiable to scholars, the opportunity has been taken to benefit from the hospitality of Hugoye in order to provide some basic annotation, in addition to the section “For Further Reading” at the end of each volume.     Technologies of Identity: The Language of the Incontinent Body in Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel DONNA PALMATEER PENNEE N AN ESSAY ENTITLED “Identity, Genealogy, History” Nikolas Rose explains the Foucauldian sense of “technology” that is signalled I in this paper: Technology, here, refers to any assembly structured by a practical rationality governed by a more or less conscious goal. Human tech- nologies are hybrid assemblages of knowledges, instruments, persons, systems of judgement, buildings and spaces, underpinned at the pro- grammatic level by certain presuppositions about, and objectives for, human beings.… Perhaps the insistence upon an analytic of human technologies is one of the most distinctive features of the approach, … an analysis which does not start from the view that the technologizing of human conduct is malign, but rather examines the ways in which human beings have been simultaneously capacitated and governed by their organization within a technological field. (132; emphasis added) Rose’s terms help to clarify something of what is meant by the “produc- tivity” of “power,” and, while “not start[ing] from the view that the technologizing of human conduct is malign” can permit a more complex view of the historical field than is usually available through cause-effect lenses, I want nevertheless to address the malignancy of technologies of the self. This hurtfulness of history is represented in the literal and figu- rative workings of the incontinent body in Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel, a novel that displays the armature of a self simultaneously capaci- tated and governed by the force fields of negative difference.
