After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in1867, Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace for a while before being donated to the city and opened up to the public as a historic site. Its palace buildings are arguably the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan’s feudal era, and the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994. Next visit, Heian Jingu Shrine which has a relatively short history, dating back just over a hundred years to 1895. The shrine was built on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the capital’s foundation in Kyoto and is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who reigned from the city, Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867). Heian is the former name of Kyoto. Today’s hands-on experience is “Surikomi Yuzen (brush dyed Yuzen)”. Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a handkerchief you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time. Lastly, we visit Kiyomizu Temple (literally “Pure Water Temple”). In 1994, the temple was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Day 3: CHITOSE - LAKE SHIKOTSU - NOBORIBETSU ONSEN. After breakfast we head out for a full day Day 9: SOUNKYO ONSEN - KITAMI - ABASHIRI. This morning, we’ll enjoy a visit to Ginga Ryusei of sightseeing. Lake Shikotsu is located in southwestern Hokkaido, west of the city of Chitose. It is a Waterfall. The word “Ginga” means “the Milky Way” and the word “Ryusei” means “a shooting crater lake that was formed over 40,000 years ago by volcanic acitivity, and it has a maximum depth of star”. It was peppermint that built Kitami’s economy in the early days. During the peak production in 363 meters, making it the second deepest lake in Japan. Next we stop at a local restaurant and enjoy a 1938/1939, Kitami’s peppermint accounted for approximately 70% of the global market and became Salmon Teppanyaki Lunch. We continue our journey to the town of Shiraoi, visiting Porotokotan globally recognized as a special produce of Kitami and of Japan. Heian Ferry is the former name of Kyoto. At high tide, the vermilion torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine looks like it’s floating in the middle of the sea. Day 3: Fri, June 03 – NAHA. After a sumptuous buffet breakfast at your hotel, we embark on a full day of discovery! First stop this morning is Shuri Castle, the most important castle of the Ryukyu Kingdom, serving both as the central government office and royal residence. The present buildings are beautiful reconstructions from 1992. Shurijo is the only castle in Okinawa that has been reconstructed. Only ruins remain of all the other castles. After a shopping stop at AEON Mall we enjoy a “Soki soba teishoku”. Okinawa soba with stewed soki (stewed pork spare ribs, with the cartilage still attached) on top. The soki are prepared by first boiling to remove excess fat, then stewing in a mixture of awamori (to soften the meat), soy sauce, and sugar for three to four hours. They are then placed in a bowl of Okinawa soba. Next we visit Himeyuri Peace Prayer Memorial Museum & Park. Near the end of World War Two, Okinawa Honto became the site of one of the war’s bloodiest battles, when the US forces invaded and occupied the island. An estimated 200,000 people, including Bus more than 100,000 civilians and 12,500 Americans were killed in the battle, which lasted from April to June 1945.
