Mit ein paar Impressionen von der Premiere des Kinofilms DIE KIR- CHE BLEIBT IM DORF, zu der wir am vergangenen Mittwoch ein- geladen waren, möchten wir uns in den Sommerurlaub verabschieden. S ist wie fast jedes Jahr: erst wenn alle Anderen ihren Urlaub schon absolviert haben, sind wir dran. Aber so ein richtiger Urlaub ist das eigentlich gar nicht. Nichts von we- gen faul am Strand liegen und sich Filme in HD auf dem Smartphone reinziehen! Das Fantasy Filmfest Fotos (c) 2012 by Wolfram Hannemann steht bereits vor der Tür und wird uns wieder eine ganze Woche lang von morgens bis spät in die Nacht hinein mit aktueller Filmware ver- sorgen. Wie immer werden wir be- müht sein, möglichst viele der prä- sentierten Filme auch tatsächlich zu sehen. Schließlich wird eine Groß- zahl der Produktionen bereits kurze Zeit nach Ende des Festivals auf DVD und BD verfügbar sein. Und da möchte man natürlich schon vor- her wissen, ob sich ein Kauf lohnen wird. Nach unserer Sommerpause werden wir in einem der Newsletter wieder ein Resümee des Festivals ziehen. The history of the character, which began in 1928, reveals that he has never fully lost his appeal to subsequent generations. The pictures of premiums that accompany the article are from Jon’s extensive collection of Buck Rogers ephemera. • • • Walt Needham, Member #1102, has been a popular contributor of BLT articles for nearly 20 years. His carefully researched articles provide details that most collectors don’t know about the characters in the Big Little Books. In this issue Walt takes us on a journey through the world of Jane Arden, one of the earliest comic strip characters who exemplified the changing role of women in the American Society. Although Jane appeared in just one BLB, her comic book life lasted for many decades – from 1927 through 1968. -

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew. -

They were often illustrated with highly stylized, full-page cover art and numerous line art illustrations of the fictional content. They were sold at a price the working classes could afford, though they were popular with all classes. The earlier magazines, such asAll-Story , were general fiction magazines, though later they diversified and helped solidify many of the genres we are familiar with today, including western, detective, science fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, and sports fiction. The first pulp, Argosy, began life as the children’s magazine, The Golden Argosy, dated December 2nd, 1882 and the last of the “original” pulps was Ranch Romances and Adventures, November of 1971. Despite the limited historical range of the pulpwood magazine form, the “pulp aesthetic” continues to influence popular culture today. With this in mind, we are calling for presentations for the National PCA/ACA Conference that discuss the pulps and their legacy. Magazines: Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, Wonder Stories, Fight Stories, All-Story, Argosy, Thrilling Wonder Stories, Spicy Detective, Ranch Romances and Adventures, Oriental Stories/Magic Carpet Magazine, Love Story, Flying Aces, Black Mask, and Unknown, to name a few. However, his millions of fans prefer to remember him as “Buck Rogers” from the Universal motion picture and NBC series, “BUCK ROGERS in the 25th CENTU- RY”. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Gil headed to New York in the summer of 1969 where he found a job as a taxi driver and began training with Phillip Burton at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. It wasn’t long before Gil found himself working in the “business”, however, when one of his fares told him he should audition for “Love Story” which was filming in New York at that time. He au- ditioned, got the job, worked on the film for about ten weeks and never looked back. Following “Love Story”, Gil began auditioning for and getting com- mercials for various national accounts, including Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Co., Procter & Gamble products such as Dristan, Loving Care, Campbell’s Soups, etc. All in all, Gil ended up starring in over 400 television commercials during the eight years he was in New York. Gil also joined the cast of the Emmy Award winning “The Doctors”. He played returned prisoner of war Dr. Alan Stewart for 3 and 1/2 years. During this time, Gil formed an independent production company with two partners and produced a low-budget feature film entitled, “Hooch” and a Broadway musical, “The Amen Corner”, based on GIL GERARD James Baldwin’s award-winning play of the same name. -

I was time-slipped to the front porch of my childhood Carver Street home, a stack of luscious comic books piled high, my behind on gray painted concrete, sneakers on the stoop, a hot humid day. (Yes, my mother absolutely threw a fortune away.) As I and my doppelgänger read and viewed, I knew that this encounter with comic books was the missing dimension for which I had been yearning. I continue to read and am mighty partial, not to the superhero books, but to the graphic editions that draw from and create true science fiction. Mystery In Space, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, Journey Into the Unknown, Planet Comics, Tales of Suspense, Out of this World, Unknown Worlds, the Buck Rogers.Flash Gordon and Brick Bradford newspaper comic strips, even in the name of all that has crumbled, Magnus Robot Fighter. The incomplete list does not even begin to contemplate any modern comic book attempts at SF. People ask me, “How do you find time to read?”As if that was a legitimate question. I answer, “How is it that you can’t find the time? Are you standing in a supermarket line, eating breakfast, waiting for the movie to begin, riding on the bus, sitting in your backyard, taking the dog for a stroll, mowing the lawn?” I do get a few peculiar looks while intent on the EC work of Wally Wood, Johnie Craig and Al Feldstein as I peddle the hamster running machine at the gym. -
