Student Handbook 2019 – 2020 Sunnydale Adventist Academy Student Handbook 2019 – 2020 Mission Statement Sunnydale Adventist Academy’s purpose is to fulfill the Gospel Commission while providing academic excellence. “Go throughout the whole world and preach the gospel to all people.” Mark 16:15 Purpose Sunnydale Adventist Academy, a Seventh‐day Adventist secondary boarding school, seeks to provide a safe, Christian environment in which students may grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. Through Christ‐centered teaching, Sunnydale educates students to choose service as a way of life and to be active members in God’s service. Philosophy Our goal is to team with the home and church in the salvation of young people. Our desire is to cultivate within each student a desire to worship God, to be a contributing member of society, and to serve humanity in the Great Gospel Commission. “Every human being, created in the image of God, is endowed with a power akin to that of the Creator – individuality, power to think and to do. The people in whom this power is developed are the people who bear responsibilities, who are leaders in enterprise, and who influence character. When a student enrolls at Sunnydale, they become a representative for Sunnydale Adventist Academy. The student’s life style choices are to be in harmony with Seventh‐day Adventist/Christian principles. By enrolling at Sunnydale, the student is agreeing to follow and cooperate with Sunnydale’s standards and regulations. Sunnydale does not discriminate based on race, color, or national origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, and other school administered programs. Sunnydale authorization by Federal law to enroll international students. An international student needs to complete the steps to enrollment and receive an I‐20 from Sunnydale, then apply with the proper authorities to receive an F‐1 student status before registering for classes. Steps to Enrollment 1. Obtain an application packet from Sunnydale or download the application and recommendation forms from www.sunnydale.org. 2. Submit an application form. 3. Confirm that Sunnydale receives three recommendation forms from: a. Teacher of applicant (from last school attended) b. Pastor / Sabbath School Teacher / Pathfinder Leader c. Employer / Adult family friend (non‐relative) 4. When the application, recommendation forms, and transcript (for grades 10‐12) are on file, then the admissions committee will review the applicants file and render a decision. 5. Paperwork that needs to be completed immediately after receiving acceptance: a. Sunnydale consent for medical treatment form signed by parent/guardian b. Photo copy of medical insurance cards c. Updated immunization records or signed exemption forms are required for a student to attend class (Missouri Revised Statutes, Chapter 210, Section 210.003) d. Current student physical examination (within 90 days of school starting) e. Health Assessment form f. Financial agreement forms 6. Applicant must complete the admissions process before registering for classes. 5 | Page General Information Sunnydale Adventist Academy, a co‐educational boarding secondary school, operated by the Iowa‐Missouri Conference of Seventh‐day Adventist, opened to students in 1946. Sunnydale provides a comprehensive educational program that includes spiritual, academic, and social development.     Joss’s Jesus: Christ-figures in the Whedonverses Joss’s Jesus: Christ-figures in the Whedonverses Melody Cook Deans’ Distinguished Essay Award recipient Abstract In the fifth season finale ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer (2001), Buffy sacrifices herself to save her sister (and the world) by leaping into a portal with her arms outstretched. In the final scenes of The Cabin in the Woods (2012), Marty refuses to die in order to save the world, instead watching as it crumbles around him. In the former, Buffy is an obvious Christ-figure, while in the latter Marty subverts the trope in his refusal to be a sacrifice. This paper explores the prevalence, meaning, and evolution of the Christ-figure trope in the works of Joss Whedon. Drawing from research in the fields of both Whedon studies and religion and popular culture, I define and set parameters for identifying Christ-figures before exploring the use of the Christ-figure in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Finally, I briefly reflect on the question, what can we learn from the conflicted religiosity of the Whedonverses?.     Lewis Call "Sounds Like Kinky Business to Me": Subtextual and Textual Representations of Erotic Power in the Buffyverse [1] Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel have done a great deal to promote tolerance of alternative sexualities. The two programs are especially well known for their positive depictions of gay and lesbian sexuality. However, Buffy and Angel have also brought about another intriguing revolution in the representation of unorthodox sexual practices. Throughout the twelve seasons which comprise the Buffyverse narrative, Buffy and Angel have consistently provided positive portrayals of sadomasochism (S/M) and erotic power exchange. In the early seasons these representations were, of necessity, largely subtextual. As the two shows progressed, however, they began to provide bolder, more explicit depictions of S/M. Thus the Buffyverse's discourse of erotic power gradually moved out of the subtextual and into the realm of the textual. As representations of erotic power exchange became more open and explicit at the textual level, these representations became increasingly available to the Buffyverse's audience. In the later seasons of Buffy and Angel, the two programs did not merely depict S/M, but actually presented it as an ethical, egalitarian way in which participants might negotiate the power relations which are an inevitable part of their lives. Buffy and Angel brought S/M out of the closet and normalized it. The two programs thus offered their audiences a positive and practical model of erotic power exchange. The Buffyverse has already secured for itself a prominent place in the history of narrative television. By endorsing the ethical exchange of erotic power, Buffy and Angel may earn an important place in the history of sexuality as well.
