Finally, I would like to thank all the innumerable friends and colleagues who have contributed positively during my academic journey. iv THE EFFECT OF SEMANTIC NEIGHBORHOOD DENSITY ON VOCABULARY LEARNING IN SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE AND SPANISH AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE By Marián Giráldez Elizo B.A., English Linguistics & Literature, University of Alcalá, 2006 M.A., English Linguistics & Literature, University of Alcalá, 2006 M.A., Hispanic Linguistics, University of New Mexico, 2014 Ph.D., Educational Linguistics, University of New Mexico, 2020 Abstract This dissertation reviews the results from an online survey created to identify and compare how second language (L2) learners and heritage language (HL) learners of Spanish, enrolled in beginning-level coursework at the college level, acquired and built vocabulary. A total of 451 participants completed the survey. The purpose of the online survey was to serve as a baseline for pedagogical purposes, since it provided information about participants’ language profiles and the way they build vocabulary based on sematic relatedness. Overall, the findings from the survey showed that HL and L2 learners differ in the way they build semantic neighborhoods and, in their meaning-making processes. HL participants produced a higher number of Spanish semantic associations for the provided Spanish categories, whereas L2 learners produced a higher number of English semantic associations for both the Spanish and English categories. Additionally, HL learners left more responses blank in both the Spanish and English categories. The findings support the idea that tailored vocabulary pedagogical practices and interventions v will benefit and enhance students’ vocabulary development and learning in the Spanish language classroom. Knowing how much they have lost, Colombians have tried to retain and Against this background, , a government institution, was granted the responsibility of promoting and developing the country s artisanal and craft sector, and the organisation's efforts have started to bear fruits with regard to one of Colombia s main crafts, the Sombrero Vueltiao, pictured below. The Sombrero Vueltiao is probably Colombia's best known and most popular craft. The hat comes from a tradition that can be traced back a thousand years, and uses particular colours, designs and weaving techniques. The hat is made of gynerium sagittatum, also known as , and its name refers to its particular characteristics - The Sombrero Vueltiao has long been part of Colombia s indigenous tradition, and is now preserved in the genuine products, but also damaged the economy of the reservation. Therefore, advised by Colombia reservation first protected the Sombrero Vueltiao by means of a denomination of origin, in 2010 (File No 10-033772, Certificate No 12), which delimits the zone in which the hat can been made, and regulates the technique used to produce the hat. The Sombrero Vueltiao was also registered as a collective trademark (File No 11-020241, Certificate No 436,800) to further specify and protect not only the unique and reservation. It seems that, in Colombia, the use of denominations of origin, collective trademarks and certification trademarks has become an ideal mechanism to protect the crafts, traditions and customs of the different intellectual property, such as the (File No 10-023430, Certificate No 8), the Mopa Mopa Barniz de Pasto (File No 10-031917, Certificate No 10), and the (File No 10-023423, Certificate No 11).

    Spanish Cuentos El sombrero vueltiao de Colombia A cultural paper craft www.spanishcuentos.com El sombrero vueltiao The sombrero vueltiao is a traditional hat from Colombia and one of its most important symbols. It is made out of a plant known locally as caña flecha, a type of cane that grows in the region. The word vueltiao is a Colombian regionalism from the northern Caribbean Region and the area surrounding the Magdalena River basin that originates in the word “vuelta”, Spanish for "lap" and the name started because of the way the way the hat is made. Vueltiao is correctly spelled volteado; however, the altered spelling reflects the actual pronunciation of the locals. The oldest known records of this hat are linked to the Zenú tribe of Colombia who are considered to be the original creators of this hat. The Colombian congress recently declared the Vueltiao a Cultural Symbol of the Nation and it is commonly used by Colombian athletes, singers and artists that represent Colombia. It boasts as many animal species as any country on Earth, hosting more than 1,889 species of birds, 763 species of amphibians, 479 species of mammals, 571 species of reptiles, 3,533 species of fish, and a mind-blowing 30,436 species of plants. Yet Colombia is so much more than jaguars, sombreros and the legend of El Dorado.
