CHAPTER 7 The Enduring Hopi Peter Iverson “What then is the meaning of the tricentennial observance? It is a reaffirmation of continuity and hope for the collective Hopi future.” The Hopi world is centered on and around three mesas in northeastern Arizona named First, Sec- ond, and Third. It is at first glance a harsh and rugged land, not always pleasing to the untrained eye. Prosperity here can only be realized with patience, determination, and a belief in tomorrow.1 For over 400 years, the Hopis have confronted the incursion of outside non-Indian societies. The Spanish entered Hopi country as early as 1540. Then part of Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s explor- ing party invaded the area with characteristic boldness and superciliousness. About twenty Spaniards, including a Franciscan missionary, confronted some of the people who resided in the seven villages that now comprise the Hopi domain, and under the leadership of Pedro de Tovar, the Spanish over- came Hopi resistance, severely damaging the village of Kawaiokuh, and winning unwilling surrender. -

southwestlearning.org TONTO Lower Cliff Dwelling FACTOVERVIEW SHEET Construction Sequence ARCHIVES SERVICE PARK NATIONAL Tonto National Monument, established in 1907, protects several cliff dwelling sites and numerous smaller archeo- logical sites scattered throughout the highlands and allu- vial plains within the Tonto Basin, Arizona. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is one of two large sites accessible to the public, and is the primary site visited in the Monument throughout the year. Background The Lower Cliff Dwelling consists of an approximately 20- room masonry and adobe village built within a natural al- cove above a side drainage of the Salt River called Cholla Canyon and overlooking Cave Canyon, where there is now an active spring. I am not sure which archaeologist first used that word. It seems that the first documented but unpublished use is from 1874 or 1875 (Haury 1976:5). In any case, since around then archaeologists have used their methods to define and explain the origin, development, geographic extent, and end of the Hohokam culture. This article is not about the archaeologists’ Hohokam, but about the stories and explanations of past peoples as told by the three Native American tribes who either grew from or replaced the archaeologists’ Hohokam on former Hohokam land. These are the O’odham, of course, but also the Maricopa and Yavapai. The Maricopa during European times (since about 1550) lived on lands previously occupied by the Hohokam and Patayan archaeological cultures, and the Yavapai lived on lands of the older Hohokam, Patayan, Hakataya, Salado, and Western Anasazi cultures – to use all of the names that have been used, sometimes overlappingly, for previous cultures of the region. The Stories The O’odham word huhugkam means “something that is used up or finished.” The word consists of the verb huhug, which means “to be used up or finished,” and the suffix “-kam,” which means “something that is this way.” Huhug is generally, and perhaps only, used as an intransitive, not a transitive, verb. -

Hopi and the Grand Canyon
The Hopi Landscape and People The current Hopi reservation occupies but a small portion of the Hopi’s ancestral territory. Completely surrounded by the Navajo, the Hopi Reservation sits near the center of an area commonly called Hopitutskwa [Hopi toots-kwa]. The term means “Hopi lands” and refers to the entire landscape over which Hopi’s ancestors migrated. In recent times, in part do to land claim cases, Hopitutskwa has come to be applied to a much more restricted geographic area. Beyond this area is a much broader region over which the Hopi and their ancestors lived, traveled, and interacted with the other groups in the southwest. Because Hopi ancestors (histatsinom [hee- sat-see-nom]) came to the Hopi mesas from many different directions, they each brought unique knowledge, customs, and understandings of their past. Hopi is made up of many different clans that still retain this individuality; clan knowledge and history is not shared between clans. Hopi and Öngtupqa (the Grand Canyon) Öngtupqa [oung-toop-ka] plays an ongoing central role in many aspects of Hopi culture and history: Origin – many Hopi clans identify Öngtupqa, specifically the Sipapuni I [sea-pa-poony], as the origin point for people. It is here that the peoples of the earth emerged from the Third World into this, the Fourth World. Migrations – Upon emergence into the Fourth World, the Hopi ancestors entered into a spiritual pact with Ma’saw, the guardian of the Fourth World, to become stewards of the earth. In fulfilling this pact, the Hopi ancestors were instructed to travel to the corners of the land, leaving their “footprints” as evidence of their passing, as they searched for the center of the universe, the Hopi Mesas. -

The Guidelines have been derived from the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treat- ment of Historic Properties and are specifi cally crafted to meet the needs of the City of Manitou Springs, Colorado. The Guidelines require reasonable application. Their purpose in the design approval process is to maintain and protect: • The historic integrity of individual structures and historic features in the District • The unique architectural character of the different sub-districts • The distinctiveness of the city as a whole The Guidelines provide a tool for property owners and the Commission to use in determining whether a proposal is appropriate to the long-term interests of the District. The parameters set forth in the Guidelines also support opportunities for design creativity and individual choice. Our application of the Guidelines encourages a balance between function and preservation, accommodating the needs of property -

One of these, called in the legend, Presidio dcl Paso, is situated where Juarcz, in Chihuahua, now stands, just opposite El Paso. The other four arc designated on this map as 1 Mision d 5" Lorenzo, Mision d Cenecu, Mision d la Isleta, and Mision del Socorro. Each is indicated by a picture of a church building, with surrounding lines representing irrigation canals, as the legend "riego de las misiones" states. All of these lie on the right bank of the river, or in what is now the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. It is known Crom historical sources that Indians speak. ing at least four different dialects, and probably comprising three distinct stocks, inhabited these fi\•e towns. The Mansos lived in El Paso, the Suma in San Lorenzo, the Tiwa in Ysleta, and the Piros in Senecu and Socorro; there were also other Indians - Tano, Tewa, and Jemez - scattered through some of these set tlemen-ts. -

Teacher Resource Set Title Cliff Palace, Mesa Verde National Park Developed by Laura Douglas, Education ala Carte Grade Level 3 – 4 Essential Questions How can primary sources help us learn about the past and how the people lived at Cliff Palace in what is now Mesa Verde National Park? What natural resources were used by the Ancestral Puebloan people that lived at Cliff Palace? How did the natural environment effect the way in which Ancestral Puebloan built their shelters? Why did the Ancestral Puebloan people migrate from Cliff Palace? Contextual Paragraph Mesa Verde National Park is located in Montezuma County, Colorado in the southwestern corner of the state. As of its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 it had more than 800 archaeological sites recorded or in the process of inventory. Today there are nearly 5,000 documented sites including about 600 cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde, which means, “green table” was inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans, a branch of the San Juan Anasazi Indians, from about 580 CE to 1300 CE. Today it is the most extensive and well-developed example of prehistoric cliff dwellings. Archaeologists have identified distinct periods during Mesa Verde’s habitation based on artifacts and ruins discovered there. The Cliff Palace was constructed during the Pueblo III period. According to dendrochronology (tree-ring dating), Cliff Palace construction and refurbishment happened from 1190 CE – 1260 CE, although most was done during a 20- year span. -

Sediments of the Fruitland Formation in northwestern New Mexico represent a delta plain that prograded northeastward over the retrating strandline of the. North American epeiric seaway during the late Campanian. Fruitland fossil · vertebrates are fishes, amphibians, lizards, a snake, turtles, crocodilians, dinosaurs (mostly h adrosaurs and ceratopsians) and mammals. Autochthonous fossils in the Fruitland ' Form ation represent organisms of the trophically-complex Para saurolophus community. Differences in diversity, physical stress and life-history strategies within the ParasaurolopllUS community . fit well the stablllty-time hypothesis. Thus, dinosaurs experienced relatively low physical stress whereas fishes, amphibians, small reptiles and mammals experienced greater physical stress. Because of this, dinosaurs were less likely to recover from an environment al catastrophe than were smaller contemporaneous vertebrates. The terminal Cretaceous extinctions selectively eliminated animals that lived in less physlcally -stressed situations, indicating that the extinctions resulted from an environmental catastrophe. LUCAS AND ANDREW B. HECKERT New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, 1801 Mountain Rd. NW, Albuquerque, NM 87104 ABSTRACT.—A nearly 3-km-thick section of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks is exposed at Durango, Colorado. This section con- sists of Upper Triassic, Middle-Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous strata that well record the geological history of southwestern Colorado during much of the Mesozoic. At Durango, Upper Triassic strata of the Chinle Group are ~ 300 m of red beds deposited in mostly fluvial paleoenvironments. Overlying Middle-Upper Jurassic strata of the San Rafael Group are ~ 300 m thick and consist of eolian sandstone, salina limestone and siltstone/sandstone deposited on an arid coastal plain. The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation is ~ 187 m thick and consists of sandstone and mudstone deposited in fluvial environments. The only Lower Cretaceous strata at Durango are fluvial sandstone and conglomerate of the Burro Canyon Formation. Most of the overlying Upper Cretaceous section (Dakota, Mancos, Mesaverde, Lewis, Fruitland and Kirtland units) represents deposition in and along the western margin of the Western Interior seaway during Cenomanian-Campanian time. Volcaniclastic strata of the overlying McDermott Formation are the youngest Mesozoic strata at Durango. INTRODUCTION Durango, Colorado, sits in the Animas River Valley on the northern flank of the San Juan Basin and in the southern foothills of the San Juan and La Plata Mountains. Beginning at the northern end of the city, and extending to the southern end of town (from north of Animas City Mountain to just south of Smelter Moun- tain), the Animas River cuts in an essentially downdip direction through a homoclinal Mesozoic section of sedimentary rocks about 3 km thick (Figs.
