Beyond Philology No. 14/3, 2017 ISSN 1732-1220, eISSN 2451-1498 Pet or food: Animals and alimentary taboos in contemporary children’s literature JUSTYNA SAWICKA Received 8.07.2017, received in revised form 16.09.2017, accepted 21.09.2017. Abstract In books for pre-school and early school-age children (4-9 years of age) published in Poland between 2008 and 2014 it is possible to observe a new alimentary taboo. Though statistics show that we consume more meat than ever, we seem to be hiding this fact from the children. The animal is disconnected from the meat, which becomes just a thing we eat so that there is no need to consider animal suffering or to apply moral judgement to this aspect. The analysed books, written by Scandinavian, Spanish and American and Polish authors, do not belong to the mainstream of children’s literature, but, by obscuring the connection between the animal and the food we consume, they seem to testify to the problem with this aspect of our world that the adults – authors, educators and parents. The exhibition’s origins In 2007, the exhibition “Europe is our history! 50 years of European construction”, designed and produced by Tempora SA at the request of the Museum of Europe, was presented in Brussels on the occasion of the anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. The exhibition was quite naturally addressed at all Europeans, but in particular, with it being presented in Brussels, was aimed at an audience drawn from the founding Member States of the European Union. In 2009, at the request of the Municipality of Wroclaw, the exhibition was presented in Poland in a version adapted for a Polish audience. The Cardinal Kominek (1903-1974) was part of this adaptation which enabled us to discover his initiatives for reconciliation in Europe. This gave rise to the itinerant exhibition which, after Italy (The Vatican), Germany (Berlin) and Poland (Wroclaw), is today presented in Brussels: it allows us to discover the initiatives, of which most Belgians are largely unaware, of this Polish prelate in favor of reconciliation that was long thought impossible, between Germans and Poles. And therefore, more extensively between Europeans. 2. The essence of the first, the one most familiar to generations of the poet’s readers, was captured most saliently by Tomasz Lisiewicz in his 1894 painting Apotheosis of the Wieszcz. There is nothing remarkable in the concept itself: the figure of an author surrounded by various prod- ucts of his literary imagination.1 What is remarkable is Lisiewicz’s rendering of the author. Mickiewicz is depicted lying on his deathbed, his face modeled on august Préault’s 1867 funerary medallion of the poet’s head that Préault had in turn mod- eled, ostensibly, on the plaster cast of Mickiewicz’s face taken a few hours after his death in 1855.2 I say ostensibly, because the French sculptor reworked the features of a prematurely aged fifty-six-year-old’s death mask to resemble those of a much younger—one might say eternally young—Mickiewicz. By affixing his own render- ing of this “rejuvenated” face onto a depiction of Mickiewicz dying among charac- ters from Forefathers’ Eve, part 2, Grażyna, Konrad Wallenrod, Forefathers’ Eve, part 3, and Pan Tadeusz,3 Lisiewicz is suggesting not only that Mickiewicz’s life was coextensive with his poetry, but that it in effect ceased in 1834, after he had completed his major poetic works (never mind that he continued to compose verse until the end of his life—most notably, the so-called Lausanne lyrics—much less that he lived another twenty very eventful and very productive years).
