1989 . The Journal of Arachnology 17 :374 BOOK REVIEWS Ono, Hirotsugu. 1988. A Revisional Study of the Spider Family Thomisidae (Arachnida, Araneae) of Japan . National Science Museum, Ueno Park 7-20, Tokyo 110, Japan (Unpriced) . This is a coherent and critical treatment of the Thomisidae found in Japan. Based on a solid background of painstaking genus-by-genus revisionary work extending over the past nine years, the book provides workers with the taxonomic knowledge needed to identify 22 genera and 53 species of Japanese crab spiders . It is noteworthy that Ono has studied material and literature from regions beyond the confines of his own country, thus presenting a broad treatment that will interest arachnologists the world over . On opening the book the reader is greeted by three strikingly beautiful color photographs. One shows Xysticus croceus with its fangs buried in the thorax of a lycaenid butterfly, another a pair of Oxytate striatipes suspended in copula on a thread . The body of the book is illustrated with high-quality line and stipple drawings showing the habitus, the male palpus in two views, and the epigynum in external and internal views . These are supplemented by a table of anatomical terms which Ono uses in a sense different from that of other workers . The range maps show only collection localities within the country itself, though range statements give the world distribution . There is no attempt to illustrate intraspecific variation . For illustrations of eight of the species the reader is referred to earlier papers by Ono . The descriptions and synonymies are quite full. The inclusion of nomina nuda is a dubious practice, however, and there are no references to the world catalogues of Bonnet, Roewer, Brignoli, or Platnick . -

PREFACE This brochure is a second one in a series of annual additions to the Catalogue of the spiders of the territories of the former Soviet Union. The basic structure of the main catalogue has not been changed in the present addition (for details, see the Methodology chapter). The checklist includes only species with revised distribution data (giv- en bold). Other novations, like generic affiliation of certain species (especially in the former Lepthyphantes), new synonymy, are to be checked completely in the revised edition of the main catalogue. I am deeply obliged to my colleagues Drs. Yu.M. Marusik (Ma- gadan), A.V. Tanasevitch (Moscow), D.V. Logunov (Novosibirsk), S.L. Esyunin (Perm), Mr. E.M. Zhukovets (Minsk), Mr. A.V. Gromov (Alma-Ata), and to numerous other persons for supplying me with all necessary publications. Several reviews of my catalogue printed during the last year were also taken into consideration. 3 METHODOLOGY Each spider species included in the checklist is supplied with an attribution both to main physiographical areas and to post-Soviet republics. Past records were compiled and four new surveys of spiders in Ulleungdo Island were conducted from May to September 2019. The surveys were conducted at 18 sites in seven of the nine major administrative districts. A total of 114 species from 84 genera in 26 families were identified from 958 individual spiders. The 21 spider species belonging to 10 families were added to the known spider fauna on Ulleungdo Island from the present study. The survey results were combined present results with previous records showed there were 242 species from 143 genera in 32 families on Ulleungdo Island. The species richness in each family was high, in the order Araneidae, Theridiidae, Salticidae, Linyphiidae, Tetragnathidae, Thomisidae, Gnaphodidae and Philodromidae. Four Korean endemic species, Coscinida ulleungensis Paik, 1995, Steatoda ulleungensis Paik, 1995, Drassodes taehadongensis Paik, 1995 and Phrurolithus pennatoides Seo, 2018, found only on Ulleungdo Island. In addition, the following six indigenous species that inhabit only in Ulleungdo Island: Euryopis octomaculata (Paik, 1995), Porrhomma montanum Jackson, 1913, Piratula knorri (Scopoli, 1763), Cladothela parva Kamura, 1991, Cladothela unciinsignita (Bösenberg and Strand, 1906) and Clubiona tongdaoensis Zhang, Yin, Bao and Kim, 1997. -
