Name, Last name: Çiçek Coşkun Signature : iii ABSTRACT SOCIAL CHANGE IN TURKEY: AN ANALYSIS THROUGH SELECTED FILMS Coşkun, Çiçek Ph.D., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Assoc.Prof.Dr. Mustafa Şen September 2014, 241 pages This study aims to contribute to the research literature through the comparative examination of selected field studies and cinema films on social change in Turkey between 1950 and 1980. The study derives from the argument that it is possible to develop an alternative/contribution to the current research methods through the use of visual sources by means of the suggestions of the ‘sociological imagination’ and ‘sociology of affect’. Depending on sociological imagination and sociology of affects, it is claimed that the use of cinema films in sociological research enables fast and effective analysis of the social issues and their fast and effective transfer to the audience. The individual can comprehend social issues effectively and faster through films relevant with the subject since she/he can identify with the story and characters of the film with the effect of visuality. Contents of sociological field studies and cinema films that were chosen for the present study are compared in terms of their examination of social change in Turkey. In order to make this comparison, five field studies and eight cinema films were selected. Afterwards, depending on the issues the sociologists focused on their field studies, six concepts were determined, and the films’ approach towards these concepts are analyzed. iv Study progresses with the examination of socio-economic developments and developments of empirical studies in sociology discipline in Turkey between 1950 and 1980. Then, it focuses on the classical narrative structure, character structure, representations of social types and development of Turkish cinema. Finally, the study aims both to analyze how field studies and cinema studies focus on the issue of social change; and to indicate that cinema films can be used in social researches through the sociological imagination and sociology of affects. Çalışma “sosyolojik tahayyül” ve “duygular sosyolojisi”nin önerdiği şekilde görsel kaynakların kullanılması ile var olan araştırma yöntemlerine bir alternatif/katkı geliştirilebileceği düşüncesinden yola çıkmaktadır. “Sosyolojik tahayyül” ve “duygular sosyolojisi”ne dayanılarak, iddia edilmektedir ki, sosyolojik araştırmalarda sinema filmlerinden yararlanmak, sosyal meselelerin izleyiciye hızlı ve etkili biçimde aktarılabilmesini ve analiz edilebilmesini sağlamaktadır. Sinema filmlerinde kişi, anlatılan hikâye ve karakterle görselliğin etkisi ile hızlı biçimde özdeşlik kurabileceği için, sinema filmlerinde anlatılan sosyal meseleler izleyiciye hızlı ve direkt bir biçimde aktarılabilir. Bu amaçla çalışma için seçilen sosyolojik alan araştırmaları ve sinema filmleri içerikleri ve Türkiye’deki sosyal değişimi inceleyişleri açısından karşılaştırılmıştır. Bu karşılaştırmanın yapılabilmesi için beş tane alan araştırması ve sekiz tane sinema filmi seçilmiştir. Ardından, sosyologların alan araştırmalarında odaklandıkları konulara dayanılarak altı tane kavram belirlenmiş ve filmlerin bu kavramlara yaklaşımları incelenmiştir. vi Çalışma Türkiye’de 1950-1980 arasındaki sosyo-ekonomik değişimlerin ve sosyoloji disiplini içinde ampirik araştırmaların gelişiminin incelenmesi ile ilerlemektedir. Ardından, sinemada klasik anlatı yapısına, karakter yapısına, sosyal tiplerin temsillerine ve Türk sinemasının gelişimine odaklanmaktadır. Son olarak, çalışma alan araştırmalarının ve sinema filmlerinin sosyal değişim konusuna nasıl odaklandıklarını incelemeyi ve sosyolojik tahayyül ve duygular sosyolojisi üzerinden sinema filmlerinin sosyal araştırmalarda kullanılabileceğini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır.     SURVEILLANCE, SUBJECTIVITY AND RESISTANCE AT THE FRONTIERS OF EUROPE: A MATERIALIST ANALYSIS OF THE GREECE-TURKEY BORDERS by Özgün Erdener Topak A thesis submitted to the Department of Sociology In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (November, 2014) Copyright © Özgün Erdener Topak, 2014 Abstract The Greece-Turkey borders have become one of the main points of undocumented entry into the European Union since 2009. The borders operate through complex elements: historical processes that shape their structure, ideologies that legitimize their violent existence, techniques and technologies that allow them to be practiced over migrants, and migrants complying with or resisting these structures, ideologies, techniques, and technologies. In order to provide a comprehensive analysis of these complex elements of the border, this dissertation critically engages with Althusser’s aleatory materialism, Foucault’s analytics of power and other complementary theories, and it analyzes the four aspects of the border in individual chapters. 1. Structural-decentred aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes the historical material processes of colonialism and racism and the contemporary material processes of neoliberal globalization and post-politics that enable the EU borders to function as a decentred totality and to exclude certain peoples and not others. 2. Practical aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how the border operates in practice with specific surveillance technologies (such as radar systems and EUROSUR mechanisms at the borderzones) and techniques (such as everyday racist violence in urban contexts) that produce specific biopolitical effects on migrants. 3. Subjective aspects of the border: The dissertation analyzes how migrants develop diverse subjectivities when confronted by the border’s material violence, including stranger subjectivity, abject subjectivity, religious subjectivity, nomadic subjectivity, and dissident subjectivity.

    Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character.

Though contemporary sources reflect these shifts in many ways , this period’s rich corpus of invective verse , centering around the poet Nefʿī , has been understudied as a historical source. This dissertation rectifies this neglect by examining this invective corpus as a locus of rivalries and enmities revealing how those involved agonistically defined and were defined by their others, thus necessarily defining themselves in the process. Observing this process of definition and self-definition in the light of contemporary historical developments and sources, the dissertation examines invectives produced against both patrons ( i.e., vertical invective) and fellow poet/clients ( i.e., horizontal invective) in such a way as to demonstrate how the ferocity of the period’s invective verse, and reactions thereto, laid bare how Ottoman elites’ imaginary of themselves was in fact a marginalizing construct.

There were numerous events in the city – concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, panel discussions and so forth. From outside, everything looked fine; Istanbul 2010 seemed to mesh in a perfect way with the city’s acceleration on the list of the hip cities of the world. On the other hand, things were not that positive for those who were being pushed out of a rapidly gentrifying city centre. Neighbourhoods such as Sulukule were being removed from the memory of the city, rents and flat prices were getting higher and higher, while in numerous neighbourhoods, people were living in anxious expectation of urban transformation projects. This made me think about these people who were suffering the most because of the drastic changes, as Istanbul was competing in the race to become a global city: these people living in poor neighbourhoods in the city centre, or in ex-shanty-towns which were whetting the appetites of building contractors.

Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962).

    The Environment and Early Influences Shaping Political Thought of Niyazi Berkes in British Cyprus, 1908-1922* Şakir Dinçşahin Yeditepe University Abstract Niyazi Berkes was born on 21 September 1908 in Nicosia/Lefkoşa, the capital of Cyprus. Naturally, his intellectual personality began to be shaped by the social and political context on the island as well as the empire which was in the process of imperial change. As a result of the turmoil created by the British rule, the Young Turk Revolution, the First World War, and the Turkish national struggle, the Greek and the Turkish identities for the Orthodox and the Muslim communities, respectively, were constructed. Niyazi Berkes, who was born and raised in this turbulent period, developed the Turkish national identity that laid the foundations of his patriotism among the Muslim community. But in the early years of his long life, the social and political context of Cyprus also planted the seeds of his liberal-mindedness. Özet Niyazi Berkes 21 Eylül 1908’de İngiliz idaresine devredilmiş olan Doğu Akdeniz’deki Osmanlı adası Kıbrıs’ın Lefkoşa şehrinde dünyaya gelmiştir. Niyazi Berkes’in çocukluk ve yetişme döneminde entelektüel kişiliğini belirgin bir biçimde etkilemiş olan üç temel olgudan bahsedilebilir. Bunlardan birincisi Kıbrıs’taki özgür düşünce ortamı, ikincisi Kıbrıs’taki Müslüman ve Ortodoks cemaatlerin uluslaşma sürecine girmeleriyle beraber ortaya çıkan etnik gerilimdir. Sonuncusu ise Birinci Dünya Savaşı (1914– 1918) ile Anadolu’daki bağımsızlık mücadelesinin Kıbrıs’taki Müslüman- Türk ahali üzerinde yarattığı travmadır.
