Thomas Print out a form and register for the meeting now! Trilobites, phylogenetic context, and the Palaeozoic Evolutionary Fauna JONATHAN M. ADRAIN Department of Palaeontology, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD Trilobites represent the dominant component of Sepkoski's (1981, 1984) Cambrian Evolutionary Fauna. As a clade, they reached peak taxonomic diversity from the Late Cambrian to the Middle Ordovician. Their subsequent history reflects crisis at the end-Ordovician mass extinction followed by continuous reduction until their end-Permian disappearance. Conventional interpretation of this pattern recognizes a transition near the base of the Middle Ordovician (Whiterockian), involving a shift in marine communities from earlier trilobite-dominated assemblages to articulate brachiopod- rich faunas of the rapidly radiating Palaeozoic Fauna. The actual mechanisms remain controversial (e. g. passive dilution v. active displacement), but there is little question that trilobites as a whole became relatively minor components of many mid-Palaeozoic communities. The overall pattern of Ordovician-Silurian trilobite decline is, however, misleading. While the clade as a whole was in quantitative taxonomic decline, no single natural subgroup of trilobites has a diversity history corresponding to this cumulative pattern. In addition, the best available estimates of trilobite alpha diversity (Adrain and Westrop, 1996) indicate stasis in within-community trilobite species richness from Upper Cambrian to Upper Silurian. This disparity is accounted for in part by a new phylogeny-based compilation of trilobite generic abundance. When post-Ordovician trilobites are resolved as suprageneric monophyla, these clades may be traced to encompass their Ordovician origins. -

VENUS 65 (1-2): 27-49, 2006 Review New Outlook on the System of Chitons (Mollusca: Polyplacophora)* Boris Sirenko Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Universitetskaya nab.1, St. Petersburg 199034, Russia; [email protected] Abstract: In order to build a natural classification of the chitons, a new approach is proposed that uses not only the shells, as usual, but also other suitable features including aesthetes, girdle, radula, gills, glands, egg hull projections, spermatozoids etc. Several previous classifications are discussed. A brief review of the evolution of the Polyplacophora is given and a new classification of the chitons is proposed. The roles of the articulamentum and the reductions in the tegmentum in chitons are discussed. The evolutionary line of the reduction of slits is shown for the superfamily Cryptoplacoidea. Specifically, the genera Hemiarthrum, Weedingia and Choriplax, which have unslitted valves, have been removed from the order Lepidopleurida and reassigned to the order Chitonida within the Cryptoplacoidea. Affinities of these and other genera within the Cryptoplacoidea are discussed. The described natural system is a reflection of our ideas about affinities, expressed with the aid of a hierarchy of taxa. In the words of Darwin (1873): “...that Natural System is founded on descent with modification; - that the characters which naturalists consider as showing true affinity between any two or more species, are those which have been inherited from a common parents...all true classification being genealogical; - that community of descent is the hidden bond which naturalists have been unconsciously seeking...” For the early classifications of chitons, naturalists usually used a single or a few characters and their classifications were thus artificial. -

Both of them possess a complete Paleozoic geological succession ranging from Cambrian to Permian. Type sections and type localities have been studied and designated to both areas. Some limestone units of both geoparks have formed an outstanding feature of spectacular beautiful karst morphology. The geological international significant can be classified into 4 categorizes. 1) The Tarutao Group type stratigraphic section at the Tarutao Island, where many Cambrian-Ordovician index fossils and new genus are found. Furthermore, brachiopod and conodont fossils identified Cambrian-Ordovician boundary. Recently, absolute dating of ash layers found between the index fossil layers at the Cambrian- Ordovician boundary has been studied and this may bring to another indication of absolute age of the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Points (GSSP).
