LADIES AXD GEXTLEJIEK,— By long custom an annual address usually assumes the form of a summary of some sort, and most frequently that of a review of the status oi the object for the advancement of which the Society addres=ed exists, or of some particular branch thereof. In this wise I ventured last year to put before you some ideas concerning what evidences there might bo of evolutionary processes among the Mollusca, and to-night would invite your attention to what may be called the case of Malacology verms PalteoconchoW. Ihis title rather emphasizes a condition of affairs that certainly ought not to exist, but which, unhappily, does exist even yet, namely that the gulf between the students of the recent and of the fossil forms oi Mollusca is still far wider than of right it should be. Each goes too much his own way without taking account of the work of his iellow, at the same time complaining, and often with justice, that the other pays no heed to his discoveries or conclusions. Surely it is not asking too much of the morphologist that, though apparently endowed with a plethora of recent material to work on lie should nevertheless check the results of his investigations as to the phylogenetic relationships of the groups with which he maybe dealing by the corresponding work of his palteontological brethren so far as they will serve him. On the other hand, no condemnation is too strong for the palaeontologist who wilfully ignores the teaching of the morphologist and persists in classing together convergence forms, well-known at the present day (e.g. -

British Geological Survey, Keyworth, NOTTINGHAM, NG12 5GG Summary: Ground investigations for the A303 Stonehenge Tunnels revealed a unique and complex Chalk geology including the presence of the thickest (>20m thick), and previously unknown phosphatic chalks in England, partly filling fault controlled erosional channels. The use of natural gamma-ray borehole logs to determine the presence and thickness of the phosphatic deposits is of particular value and combined with the lithostratigraphy, macrofossil and nannofossil biostratigraphy from cores has, for the first time, accurately constrained the Coniacian to Santonian age and the lenticular geometry of such deposits. Four phosphatic chalk events between 88.5-86.5 Ma are recognised associated with synsedimentary faulting. We suggest a causal link between tectonics, subsidence and channel-formation, phosphatisation events, pulses of oceanic upwelling on a frequency of about 0.5 million years to mantle-controlled plate tectonic episodes. -

Development of the Turonian Conulus Lagerstätte in the Wielkanoc quarry, Miechów Upland (South Poland). Annales Societatis Geologorum Poloniae, 75: 199–210. Abstract: Turonian sandy limestones and organodetrital limestones exposed in the Wielkanoc quarry, Miechów Upland, South Poland, lie on Oxfordian massive limestones, truncated with an abrasion surface. The bed situated ca. 2.5 m above the abrasion surface contains a parautochthonous and monotypic assemblage of the species Conulus subrotundus Mantell, 1822; thus the concentration can be referred to as the Conulus Lagerstätte. The microfacies analysis of the Conulus Lagerstätte indicates its development to have been determined by the existence of eco-events producing an increased population of Conulus subrotundus, and of sedimentological factors, that is waning of the loose sediment from the sea floor and erosion of the consolidated deposit rich in the earlier fossilised echinoids. The episodes of material accumulation, its consolidation and erosion in high-energy environment (action of bottom current) led to the increase of amount of echinoids as the intraclasts according to the model of lag sediment deposition.
