Under 18 Floodlit – Quickmovenow.com For Wootton Bassett Town safety from relegation has now been achieved and the squad can hopefully enjoy the remaining fixtures without the pressure. The win against Ascot United on Ladies – Aftech Sheet metal & fabrications and Tuesday night was well deserved and congratulations to Alex Green on his return to form and a bristol batteries hat-trick. Not sure why the Ascot fans and players were moaning about the last two Bassett goals, both were onside and good well taken goals but blaming linesmen seems to be a habit of late for our visitors. YOUTH SECTION Just a quick plug for next weeks Wiltshire County FA Youth Cup Final next week which sees Under 18 – Aftech Limited Wootton Bassett Town Under 18s take on New College Academy on Tuesday April 19th, 7.30pm kick off at Bremhill View, home of Calne Town. Firstly I would like to welcome the players, officials and supporters of Wantage Town to Rylands Way. We hope you enjoy your short stay with us and will join us all for a drink in the bar after the game.

It looks as if we have achieved our first objective of staying in this league. We have had three terrific results back to back just when we needed them most. Two gutsy wins over Ascot and Witney where we came from behind. But for me the best result was our 1-1 draw at Kiddlington. Not many people would have given us any chance there.

Today we welcome Wantage to Rylands Way. I have watched Wantage numerous times this season and in my opinion they are one of the best football teams in this league. They have had a terrific season and still have a lot to play for, so this afternoon is going to be a tough one for us. But that is what we all wanted when we joined this league.

We have five games to play over the next ten days and that schedule is going to push our small squad to the limit. Every player will have to play their part over the next ten days. Then we can all take a well earnt rest.

We have come a long way this season as a squad and a management team, and for the best part it has been great fun. The younger members of the team will be far better players next year for all the valuable experience they have gained this season. I have to say that I am really proud of the way such a squad has stuck together and matured this season.

On Monday the 25th we play our last game of the season against Pegasus Juniors. Ironically that was our first game of the season some 42 games ago. It would be great if we could finish the season with a win. Just as we started it way back in August.

After the game on Monday we all staying behind for a drink in the club. It would be great to see as many of you who can make it to the club after the game, the whole squad is looking forward to sharing a drink with you all and showing our appreciation for your support this year.

This time last week, Wootton Bassett Town were fighting for their Hellenic Premier Division lives. Now though they are sitting comfortably in 14th place as an Alex Green hat-trick paved the way for a come from behind 3-2 victory against Ascot United, meaning Dave Turners side have taken seven points from nine. 1902/03 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up Green struck the winner with virtually the last kick of the game, lobbing an advancing Chris Grace 1902/03 Advertiser Cup Runners-up from fifteen yards with a weighted effort after a perfectly placed through ball from youngster Adam Topping, who once again impressed off the bench. Although somewhat inconsistent during the year, 1903/04 Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up the former Shrivenham front man gave a clinic in assured finishing, with all three of his goals being 1905/06 Wiltshire County League Runners-up expertly taken. He would no doubt have applauded Ian Brooks opener for the visitors ten minutes in though. A looping cross from the left was not dealt with properly as Ethan Delaney, having missed a 1930/31 Calne & District League Runners-up one-on-one opportunity at the other end moments earlier, failed to clear his lines. Brooks, ready to 1931/32 Calne & District League Champions pounce on the edge of the area, then struck a searing volley, demonstrating perfect technique, into 1933/34 Vale of White Horse Cup Winners the top left corner past a despairing Stewart Thompson. The scores were then levelled midway through the period. Emphasising how far they have come this season, Bassett patiently built an 1934/35 Calne & District League Champions attack, and after a neat set from Sam Collier, Richie Carter provided an inch perfect pass into the Calne & District League Cup Winners feet of Green from near halfway. Controlled brilliantly, the forward turned his marker on the edge of the box and with his next touch tucked the ball past Grace into the bottom right corner. Parity would 1935/36 Calne & District League Champions last all of two minutes though. Brooks was again involved, this time acting as provider. His whipped Calne & District League Cup Runners-up in corner, placed dangerously underneath the crossbar, was fumbled by Thompson and Jessie Wilson 1938/39 Brotherhood Cup Winners was quickest to react, sweeping home the loose ball from close range. With quarter of an hour to go before the break, a jinking run from Delaney opened up the Ascot defence, and after his low cross 1953/54 Vale of White Horse Cup Winners was sliced, Green should really have equalised again. But he would make his only mistake of the 1957/58 Chippenham & District League Division 2 Champions match, somehow snatching at the ball and hacking it wide from eight yards. Moments before the half time whistle, Ascot were unfortunate not to have a third when their leading scorer Jon Bennett 1958/59 Wiltshire League Division 1 Champions muscled his way past three defenders before shooting low from ten yards, but Thompson was able 1978/79 Wiltshire County League Division 2 Runners-up to redeem himself for his earlier error and made an assured save on the dive. Wiltshire County League Subsidiary Cup Winners

It would be all Bassett following the restart, the visitors no doubt with one eye on their Floodlit Cup 1982/83 Wiltshire County League Division 4 Runners-up semi final encounter with Abingdon on Thursday. However their second half defensive performance 1983/84 Wiltshire County League Ghia Senior Cup Winners left a lot to be desired as Bassett controlled play and opened their visitors up with ease. The shrewd introduction of forward Topping for veteran defender Mark McMeeking tilted the games balance 1984/85 Wiltshire County League Division 2 Champions firmly in favour of the hosts. But it took them time to get back on level terms once again as both Wiltshire County League Ghia Junior Cup Runners-up Matt Bown and Delaney came agonisingly close. Then, with eighteen minutes left, expert hold up 1987/88 Wiltshire County League Division 1 Champions play for Collier and a weighted ball into the right channel set Green, having beaten the offside trap, loose. And after bearing down on goal, he coolly slotted beneath Grace at his near post. Pressure Wiltshire Senior Cup Runners-up continued to be applied, but Ascot appeared as though they were set to see it off and make the long 1988/89 Wiltshire County League Ghia Junior Cup Runners-up journey home with a point in the bag. Indeed, Bassetts luck seemed to have deserted them when a dangerous low Delaney cross, needing just a touch to guide it home, sailed across the face of goal 1989/90 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Winners and out of play. But from nothing, Turners troops found a winner with seconds remaining. Jon 1993/94 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Winners Beedens clearance out of defence was controlled fantastically by Topping, and after holding off his 1994/95 Hellenic League Division 1 Cup Runners-up marker he clipped the ball in for Green, having again breached a shaky offside trap, to provide the finishing touch. It was no less than Bassett deserved, and will give them extra confidence ahead of 1998/99 Wiltshire Senior Cup Winners Saturdays visit of title chasers Wantage Town. Victory would severely dent the Alfredians title 2000/01 Wiltshire Senior Cup Winners chances and mean Bassett would join the company of Slimbridge and Highworth Town as the only teams to do the league double over them this season. Hellenic League Reserves Division 2 West Champions 2009/10 Hellenic League Division 1 West Runners-up Scoops Man of the Match: Alex Green , in an impressive team display, Jon Beeden, Matt Bown and Matt Boucher all stood out, but Green topped the lot, producing three quality finishes to seal three well earned points.

Scoop Rating: 8/10, chances for the visitors were few and far between, especially in the second period, which Bassett controlled. Although the two goals conceded came in disappointing fashion, those isolated incidents aside, this was a great performance. The team again showed their character to twice come from behind before going on to win and deservedly shot up the table as a result. The result means Trowbridge Tn v Letcombe Easington Sports v Hook Norton we are nine points clear of our nearest rivals and two wins out of the next four will secure the first ever title for Winterbourne Utd v Headington Amat's Letcombe v Cheltenham Sar's the club at this level.
