Good Evening and Welcome back to all players, staff, officials and supporters of Westfields FC I hope you enjoy your visit to Kayte Lane this evening for what promises to be an entertaining league encounter.

Following last week’s 3-2 win over tonight’s opponents we continued our progress in another cup competition on Saturday winning 3-0 away at Shortwood in the rearranged tie following the abandonment last time. Watts 2 and Liam Wright were the scorers on what was a disciplined performance.

Tonight is what seems a rarity these days a league game!!! And with it being a clash of the top two then it is sure to be built up as a “big game” it is important that we look to continue our good home form in the league but it is only 3pts on offer and there is plenty of football left to play regardless of the outcome.

Player wise we are in a good position with only Harrison Iddles (ankle) and Elliott Kennedy (hamstring) missing – Ieuan is back from suspension, Steve Davis and Ben Maguire missed Saturday due to work commitments and Kai Mahon is finally available again as we aren’t in cup competition tonight – all this means is that my headache over selection is a big one but that is how it should be.

With a full league programme over the next two nights I'm sure like always there will be one or two results that make you think “didn’t expect that” which is why from our point of the view the next two back to back home league games it's important we look to get positive results in both.

As mentioned we host Flackwell Heath on Saturday so after tonight's game is done and dusted dust yourselves down and lets go again Saturday

As always, your support is invaluable to us and so Thanks again for your support

Enjoy the Game

BISHOPS CLEEVE FOOTBALL CLUB BRIEF HISTORY

Founded 1905 County Members Gloucestershire Football Association Southern League History 2006 – present day Hellenic League History 1983 – 2006 Principal honours 2011/12 & 2015/16 Glos. Senior Challenge Trophy Runners-Up ===== In their long history Bishops Cleeve have led a much more nomadic existence than many clubs, but have now been settled in the impressive Kayte Lane ground since 1997. For many years the club played on a ground in Stoke Road – with facilities rebuilt and reopened in 1971 by the then secretary of , Ted Croker. The enforced move to Kayte Lane came about due to the old ground being sold by the landlord. The club enjoyed a brief period of success in the late 60s – gaining promotion from the Cheltenham League and winning four Championships in their six seasons in the Glos. Northern Senior League. After dropping back to the Cheltenham League, Cleeve gained promotion into the Hellenic League in 1983, quickly becoming a force in that division, finishing fourth in their first two seasons in Div. One. This great start was followed up with a third place finish, then winning the Championship and gaining promotion to the Premier Division at the fourth attempt, and winning the ‘double’ by adding the Glos. Amateur Cup. A fantastic achievement. The five seasons in the Premier Division proved to be a struggle for the Club, although the team followed up their Cup success by adding another trophy to their collection, winning the Premier Cup at the first attempt. The return to Division One proved the catalyst for a period of rebuilding, on and off the pitch. The Club needed to enter into a number of ground share agreements to preserve their League status – Forest Green Rovers, Moreton Town, Wollen Sports and Highworth all allowed us to use their grounds. This difficult period galvanised our club members, and the club was kept running by the dedicated efforts of a few stalwarts – notably Cheltenham Town legend, Dave Lewis, whose efforts were recognised by Carling Brewery, awarding him their ‘Clubman of the Year’ accolade (and a year’s supply of beer!) After approval for the Kayte Lane site was given in 1997, club members started the building of the clubhouse and changing rooms – using materials kindly donated by Smiths Aerospace (now GE Aviation) There followed a great transformation in the team’s fortunes, and they duly secured another promotion in 2001 back to the Hellenic Premier Division. In order to take this opportunity the club entered into another ground share at Evesham United! 2003 & 2004 proved to be a landmark period for the club – returning to ‘The Lane’ after the new Stand and floodlights were approved, achieving FA Charter Standard for Football in the Community, and the completion of the building and facilities. In 2006 the team gained promotion to the Sothern League, joining the Midland Division before being moved to the South & West Division a few seasons later, where the club currently reside. The club has enjoyed mixed fortunes in their Southern League time, generally enjoying mid-table security, with the highlight being season 2011/12 when the club finished with their best ever points haul (in a creditable 11th) and reached the Gloucestershire Senior Cup final, played at Bristol City’s Ashton Gate ground, where we unfortunately succumbed to a Bristol City side featuring two Full Welsh Internationals! With the departure of to County rivals Shortwood United, the ex-Cheltenham Town professional John Brough took the helm but left towards the end of the season to join Cinderford Town. 2013/14 saw local lad Stephen Cleal take charge with Derek Lightstone, as his assistant, both had a long history with the club and they forged a close link with our Second and Third teams – as well a community tie to Bishops Cleeve Colts Youth section – the future of the club seemed much more secure on and off the field of play. After surviving relegation in their first season they put together a competitive team finishing 12th in the league and losing 1-0 to Forest Green Rovers in the County FA Senior Cup. 2016/17 saw another first for Steve winning the club’s first FA Trophy game. 2017/18 saw the arrival of Matt Jeynes to the management team another who had played for the club in recent years and they later joined by Alex Lumsden Unfortunately a number of players left the club and the season didn’t get off to a good start. The team did rally towards the latter part of the Season but were relegated after losing the last game. So after 12 years the club looked for a speedy return to Step 4 of the NLS. However, having retained most the players, the team had a few slip ups on the run in to the end of the season and finished, they also were runners-up in the County Trophy

HISTORY – Westfields F.C

Westfields Football Club enter the new 2019/2020 season as members of the UHL Hellenic Football League. Westfields have been laterally moved by the Football Association to the Hellenic Football League following a reorganisation of non-league football at Step 5 and Westfields will now enjoy a new challenge, entering new grounds and a new era as they face life going down the M4 as opposed to going up the M5, M6 and M1. Whilst in recent seasons they have often met Bishops Cleeve, Lydney Town and Fairford Town in either pre-season friendlies or cup competitions the league generally will be a completely new challenge for Westfields who have been a dominant force in Midland football since they entered the West Midland League Division 2 back in the 1978/79 season. Westfields go into the new season with a new management structure with Phil Glover as the Manager, Paul Willetts as the Assistant Manager/Head Coach, Scott Jackson as Assistant Coach and Rory Hollingshead as Goalkeeping Coach as the Westfields management team try and continue the historic rise of Westfields Football Club from the heady days of 1966 when the club was formed. During the last 52 years Westfields have enjoyed a meteoric rise throughout West Midland League football leading up to the and along the way they have finished runners-up twice, narrowly missing out on promotion from the Midland Football League into the Southern League South & West, having finished runners-up to Gresley Rovers and Stratford Town in recent seasons. Westfields celebrated their 50th anniversary year in 2015/2016 with an amazing giantkilling run in the FA Cup which saw them go through to the First Round Proper before losing in the First Round to Curzon Ashton following a Match of the Day game at allpay.park in the First Round tie which also featured Westfields’ appearance on Football Focus and prior to that the Chief Executive Andy Morris had appeared live on the FA Cup First Round Draw as a studio panel guest in Manchester. In fact 2016/2017 also saw Westfields celebrate their 50th anniversary with a celebratory dinner at The Three Counties Hotel, Hereford and Andy Morris was also a guest at the Non-League Paper luncheon at Chelsea football ground where he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for 50 years’ service as Secretary of Westfields Football Club. Other accolades were received during this season as presentations were made by the Football Association, the Midland Football League, Ladbrokes and the Emirates FA Cup Committee to celebrate the tremendous season that Westfields had enjoyed in their FA Cup run which gave them wins over Stourport Swifts, Tividale, St Ives Town, Highgate United, Walton Casuals and Leiston before they drew Conference North side Curzon Ashton at home and then lost in the replay 3-1. Westfields have enjoyed tremendous support financially by being sponsored firstly by their ground sponsors allpay Ltd who for the first 15 years were also the shirt sponsors at the club and have given financial help to the club for which Westfields are indebted to Tony Killeen from allpay and his group of Directors for their financial support over many years. Westfields have also received tremendous support from Metclad of Nottingham and the Hereford Times, Hereford along with Life Member Ron Marshall who continues to support the club as he did from the early days in 1966. Westfields are a club geared up for success with a very strong committee which has been well established over many years and with a ground with an E certificate for higher-graded football. The Hellenic League will certainly be a new challenge for Westfields but the team from Hereford are ready and waiting for the challenge ahead.

Fines don't tackle racism: how Millwall's "action plan" reflects FA's new approach

While a £10,000 penalty for racist chanting may appear an insufficient punishment, behind the scenes a considerable investment has been made into confronting the issue at The Den On September 5, Huddersfield Town were fined £50,000 for breaching the Football Association’s rules on shirt sponsorship in a publicity stunt set up by bookmakers Paddy Power. While some form of punishment was always likely following such a flagrant flouting of the laws, Paddy Power took umbrage at the decision. In a series of social media postings and press ads, the bookmakers highlighted the disparity between the Terriers’ fine and the one given to my team, Millwall, a month earlier for racist chanting in an FA Cup tie against Everton in January. Paddy Power’s response to the FA sanctions became a major media topic and led to accusations that the football authorities were not taking the problem of racism seriously. Among the several high-profile figures to offer an opinion, former England international Eni Aluko tweeted that racism was “an accepted culture” at Millwall before dismissing the fine as neither “a deterrent or solution… a £10,000 fine actively encourages racist chanting to happen again”. In fact the fine was part of a laudable new approach to tackling racism at football grounds. Seeking to find a more effective way to help clubs rather than simply impose a hefty fine and wash their hands of the matter, the FA has changed the way it deals with such incidents, making a clear distinction between the clubs and the fans responsible. An action plan was devised with the full co-operation of Millwall, who had already independently taken a number of measures. So far, the club have spent around £600,000 adhering to the plan, including implementing an improved CCTV system and increased stewarding. For a club of Millwall’s size, this represents a considerable outlay, the equivalent of a new signing. The Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel, not known for his love of Millwall, agreed with the FA’s decision, acknowledging the club’s good work in “fighting the good fight” while pouring scorn on the Terriers’ decision to get into bed with a “publicity-hungry bookmaker”. By contrast, the size of Huddersfield’s fine took into consideration the club’s complicity in the stunt, particularly chairman Phil Hodgkinson’s attempts to convince referee Martin Coy to ban the kit for extra publicity, having been previously warned by the FA they would be in breach of the rules. Yet despite being punished for contravening FA regulations, the club made a huge profit regardless of their fine, having initially received around £350,000 as payment for their partnership with the betting firm. By dragging Millwall into their spat with the Football Association, Paddy Power have successfully achieved what they set out to do, diverting attention away from themselves and onto the FA. However, despite the sympathy and support they received from many, their attempt to take the moral high ground looks shallow, especially when their track record on racism is put under scrutiny. In 2017 a Paddy Power advert promoting the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor boxing bout was banned by the Advertising Standards Agency for “racist” content. Similarly, a campaign targeting immigrants on the side of a lorry in 2015 was deemed to be racially offensive and also banned. On that occasion the company responded by saying it was just “a bit of fun” but in a BBC report last year it was accused of purposely using “racist” content to generate publicity, aware of the outrage it would create, particularly on social media. Sadly, on this occasion they were not alone in using the situation for commercial gain. At the time of writing, Paddy Power have not apologised to Millwall, although they were forced to remove a crass press release from their website. The Mirror, meanwhile, had to recant an embellished claim that “hundreds of fans” were involved in the racist chanting at The Den, rather than the true figure of a handful out of a crowd of over 14,000 home supporters. The tenth instalment of Non-League Day was a roaring success – now let’s make sure the event’s legacy continues!

The annual occasion was celebrated up and down the country in soggy but high spirits last weekend.

There was no shortage of media publicity or promotion by the country’s top clubs to encourage their fans to turn out for their local clubs during the international break.

Big names from the game led by Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson also lent their support with the former England manager recording a special video message to fans for Non-League Day’s official charity Prostate Cancer UK.

Premier League Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Southampton were among the top flight clubs tweeting their support. Championship representatives included Preston North End as Saturday’s downpours failed to dampen spirits.

Of course there were plenty of fantastic schemes and offers delivered by Non-League clubs to draw in the crowds too.

We must now encourage our friends and ‘non-regulars’ to come back again throughout the season after having a taste of the Non-League experience. Non-League Day doesn’t have to be just once a year!

It’s that time of year when chairmen and owners start getting a bit twitchy over the trigger.

Last week we saw three National League managers axed within the same amount of days.

First, left Hartlepool United on Thursday and within a few hours Garry Hill was on his way at Ebbsfleet United.

Managerial departures come with the territory these days and nothing surprises anyone in football.

But many of us were caught off guard when Fylde made it a hat-trick on Saturday by parting company with Dave Challinor.

It was only in May that the Coasters were celebrating FA Trophy glory at Wembley having missed out on promotion to the Football League in the play-off final the week before.

It shows how quickly things can change in football following a bad start. Challinor can probably feel a bit hard done by that their game was called off last weekend because of Sutton’s travel problems. As it happened he ended up out of a job. He’ll have plenty of suitors.

With most leagues having already played a healthy (or unhealthy depending on how you look at it!) amount of games, the picture of how a club’s season might play out is starting to become clearer.

Those in charge will be asking themselves, ‘stick or twist?’
