A Look Back To Our First Ever FA Cup Game

From the Mental Hospital to Portsmouth Shrivenham on Tuesday Night Saturday 17 September 1938 It was a disappointing night on Tuesday but we were our own worst enemies at times. Individual errors at the back were The Wiltshire Gazette, Thursday 22nd September 1938 responsible for all three goals conceded and then young Rhys’ indiscretion, which resulted in his sending off, certainly didn’t When Wootton Bassett visited the Wilts County Mental Hospital in the preliminary round help the cause, especially when we already had a player in the of the FA Cup on Saturday, they were soundly defeated by 6-0. Yet, at the start of the sin-bin at the time. Rhys reminds me of former player Geoff game, it seemed as though the home team were in for a evenly-contested match, and at Swatton, who played under Pete Yeardley and Mick Byrne, always playing on the edge but a fantastic player who always knew where the net was. first Wootton Bassett were undoubtedly playing the better quality football. In the first half People need to remember that Rhys is still a youngster and still, in my view, trying to work the Mental-Hospital lacked co-operation and team work, and although their play was not out where that edge is. On Tuesday he stepped over it but he more than anyone will so greatly improved in the second half, it appeared that Wootton Bassett absolutely went know he let his team mates down and will be keen to put it right as soon as possible. He to pieces. will be punished for his misdemeanour by the FA in due course. What he probably needs now is one of the more experienced players on the pitch to give a little bit of guidance, The game at the beginning was closely contested, and Wootton Bassett opened the attack, metaphorically put his arm round him and steer him in the right direction. From what I saw on Tuesday the team has some fantastic individual players but we seem to be missing so that Blagden, in the Hospital goal was kept hard at work. When the home team got a good leader/organiser, someone like Mark Vaughan or Tony Maciek or Mick Byrne when away with the leather they missed several fine chances, including shots at an open goal. he played, who can give that guidance and support to our talented youngsters from the Eventually Offer put the Hospital one up. There were plenty of free kicks for each side pitch. This does not have to be your captain, hopefully a player will step up into that role during the game. Wootton Bassett took the ball away once to give the home defence a today in what is the most prestigious competition in which we play. busy ten minutes, but luck was not with them. Play in the middle of the first half was fast, but indecisive, and it might have been anyone's game. Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup Eventually the Hospital began to get the better of the play, and were almost continually The draw for the Second Round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup has now been made and we have been drawn away against Stonehouse Town with the game scheduled to be attacking, although finding difficulty in penetrating the visitors' defence, which worked played on Saturday 17th August 2019. Stonehouse are in their first season in the Hellenic hard. When they at last succeeded, Fielding added to the home score. So, at half time, the League and play in Division One West having been promoted from the Gloucestershire score was 2-0. County League last season, having finished in 3rd place in that league. They opened their first season in the Hellenic League with a 3-1 defeat at Clanfield 85, never an easy place to In the second half there were numerous corners, and most of them at the Wootton Bassett go as we found out two season’s ago when we scraped a 1-0 away win courtesy of a goal from a certain Sam Collier. Anyone wishing to travel to support the lads at Stonehouse the end. At the start Rose had bad luck for the Hospital with an excellent shot, but play became address of the ground is as follows, Oldends Lane, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire GL10 sluggish. Palmer, of the Hospital team, was cautioned by the referee after a charging 2DG.. incident. Winchcombe for the home team, was as usual working hard, and put some fine Finally I hope you all enjoy today’s encounter in the prestigious FA Cup, neither side passes across the Bassett goalmouth, opportunities which were not always taken by the playing here today will make the final at Wembley but you can be sure both will be keen other forwards. Drury and Marsh, the Wootton Bassett backs, were working like Trojans, to go as far as possible in this season’s competition and I am sure you are in for a good but corners came all too often. From one of these Palmer made the Hospital's score up to game. three with a finely judged shot, which with the combination of the wind and the turn on Mark the ball, made it just into the visitor's goal. 44 5

From The Governor

Good afternoon to all and welcome to our first league game of the season. I would like to welcome [Away Team] management players and supporters to the Gerard Buxton Stadium, I hope they enjoy there day out at our ground. Matt and I have been busy over the summer months and are really pleased with the players we have been able to get for this coming season. Callum Parsons and Jonny Davoile have both been key players in getting their former clubs promoted out of the Hellenic League and are big signings for us this season. As are the two further players we have picked up from Newbury. Danny Langford showed last season what a handful he can be at this level and we expect him and Brad to link up well this season. Sam x

Youth Section Opponents In Focus

With Aylesbury having dropped down from the Southern League at the end of last season it is hard to judge whether they have assembled a side to bounce back at the first attempt, subject to meeting ground grading requirements. It is interesting to note that they have played three sides from the Uhlsport Hellenic League in pre-season. They opened their pre- season campaign with a 4-0 win over our opponents on Saturday, Holmer Green. They then met southern League Premier Division opponents Beaconsfield Town, going down 2-0 to higher league opposition. Their second Hellenic League opponents were another Premier League side, Ardley United, with Aylesbury winning 2-1 making it two wins out of two against sides from our division. Next up were Division One East side Risborough Rangers, a side who have moved over from the Spartan South Midland League Division One for this coming season. On the same sweltering night that we met Chippenham Town, Aylesbury went down narrowly 1-0. Their final pre-season game was against Spartan South Midland side Berkhamstead.

Saturday saw them open their Spartan South Midland league campaign with a trip to Leighton Town. On what can best be described as a “difficult pitch” both sides sought to get the ball forward as quickly as possible looking for knock-ons rather than playing through Quiz Answers the midfield. Whilst the home side had the better of things in the first half there were few 1. Abba 2. Lloyd Cole 3. Earth Wind & Fire 4. XTC 5. Gary Lineker 6. Raith Rovers 7. Everton chances created until Aylesbury went in front on the half hour mark, midfield player Bruno 8. El Darado 9. North Dakota Mystery Player: Alex Green Brito firing in with a powerful left foot shot. Leighton got themselves back in the game when a cross from the right to the far post was headed in. Aylesbury went back in front three minutes before the break when tall centre half Dan Wilson came up for a corner and rose above everybody to head powerfully into the net to make it 2-1. Before the break Aylesbury lost one of their centre backs Lewis Strafford after he landed badly and had to be assisted off the pitch. Second half saw limited chances for either side but Leighton ended the game with just 9 men (one sent-off and one in the sin-bin) and were unable to get the elusive equaliser as Aylesbury opened their league campaign with a win. Tuesday night saw them win 2-0 at home, Bruno Brito with his second of the season and young Abu Khan with the other goal that saw Aylesbury gave 3rd in the table . 11

Match Report v Shrivenham (H) The Non-League Paper

Bassett present Shrivy a derby gift So here we are again, the summer is finally done and competitive football is back for us all Gerard Buxton Ground, 6th August 2019 to enjoy. As a football fan this is the time of year that we all love. It is the moment where anything seems possible, a battle for the play-offs or maybe even a push against all the Royal Wootton Bassett Town 2 Shrivenham 3 odds for promotion. Nothing beats that feeling on the season’s opening day. Watching a raft of new signings take to the pitch, reconnecting with old friends after a long summer Ill-discipline and costly errors – two recurring problems for Royal Wootton Bassett Town – away and of course, tucking into a pre (and sometimes even post-match) pie. Personally, I combined to gift wrap a 3-2 victory to local rivals Shrivenham in Bassett's home opener as feel as though this excitement at the start of the season is amplified in Non-League, more their sluggish start to the 2019-20 campaign continued. There is a reason why the overall conclusion of every single when chasing a two-goal deficit as was the case when overplaying at the back enabled Sam league is so hard to call, from down at the bottom of the pyramid to right up in the Ockwell to score a well-taken third for his team ten minutes after the restart. National League. Of course we go to great lengths to preview the leagues and over the past few weeks we have brought out a lot of material looking ahead to the upcoming Although Callum Parsons' late penalty got his team to within a goal and the visitors' own campaign but in truth there are just so many aspects which make the new Non-League sloppy discipline saw numbers evened up, it was all too late for Bassett who, again, were season so unpredictable. With unproven new signings, previously unknown managers and the instigators of their own downfall. Ultimately, Shrivenham didn't really have to work that even entirely new squads taking to the field, nothing can beat the start of the Non-League hard for the three points. You'd assume that scoring three goals in a derby victory away season for excitement! from home would be the consequence of an excellent attacking display. Yet, aside from their three goals, they only really had one other chance of note in the game – after just Another Channel Island club! seven minutes when Ollie Rejek dragged a shot straight at Declan Lehmann after Josh It was brilliant to see new Step 6 side Jersey Bulls take to the field for their first ever Morse had teed him up.
