Most successfully, ABC Family uses Twitter to promote the teen drama Pretty Little Liars through the use of hashtags and celebrity interactions. This study analyzes Pretty Little Liars’ use of hashtags created by the network and by actors from the show. It examines how the Pretty Little Liars’ official accounts engage fans about their opinions on the show and encourage further discussion. Fans use the network- generated hashtags within their tweets to react to particular scenes and to hopefully be noticed by managers of official show accounts.

IDENTITY AND SOLIDARITY IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES: QUEER IDENITIES AND GLEE Katie M. Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. By reading the blogs as a digital archive and interviewing the bloggers, I show the positive and negative effects of an online community and the impact this show has had on queer girls, allies, and their worldviews. iv This work is dedicated to any queer human being who ever felt alone as a teenager. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my greatest thanks to my teacher and advisor, Dr. Meizel, for all of her support through the writing of this thesis and for always asking the right questions to keep me thinking. I would also like to thank Dr.

  • American Television, Drama by Nathan G
American Television, Drama by Nathan G. Tipton Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Despite a steady increase in the number of "big screen" queer characters and queerly-themed movies, the overt presence of gays and lesbians on the American small screen has been (and continues to be) far more limited. As Suzanna Danuta Walters has explained, while film has long dealt with gay subjects (albeit in often stereotyped or "tragic" ways), television's explicitly family-centric format appeared to mandate that glbtq persons were simply not a part of families that made up "typical" family audiences. After all, Walters continues, the intense intimacy and centrality of television in the personal space of family life provides a particular type of viewing experience that is fundamentally distinct from the relative anonymity of movie theaters. Not surprisingly, this family-centrism is displayed most prominently in programs shown by the five broadcast television networks, ABC, CBS, NBC, The CW, and Fox. These networks have historically been reticent about tackling homosexuality in its multifarious forms, preferring instead to leave these programming decisions to the proliferating number of cable networks. Still, long before the advent of cable, broadcast networks were tentatively exploring homosexuality by vicariously inserting into dramatic television series stereotypically gay characters. Â Early Representations From 1968 to 1974, as Edward Alwood has explained, homosexuals on television were recognizable in programs such as Kojak, M*A*S*H, Police Woman, and Hawaii Five-O because of their routine representation as limp-wristed, effeminate drag queens who walked with a swish and talked in high-pitched voices.

  • Portrayals of Teenagers in Media
Evans-Jenkins 1 Teenagers Portrayals in Modern American Television Drama by Jesse Evans-Jenkins Evans-Jenkins 2 Abstract In this paper, I will be taking a look at the television show Pretty Little Liars and will be using Media Logic category of media-centered analysis. I will be more specifically looking at character analyses, relationships, and common themes mentioned throughout the episodes. Then, I will be looking at how the show uses commodification and amplification and reduction through Media Logic. Introduction Before the 1990’s, teenagers in America would sometimes find it difficult to watch television shows on television. When television shows became popular, they were mainly targeted to families and adults. Then, shows were created for children. It took a few decades however for television shows to be created for teenagers that were too old for children shows, but too young to fully understand shows for adults. With the success of Beverly Hills, 90210, the first American Teenage Drama, television networks began to notice the need for a program dedicated to the teenage market. Television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dawson’s Creek began to appear, and soon enough, there were teen dramas on almost every major cable network. With teenagers tuning in every week to see these shows, many advertisers saw a money making opportunity. If teenagers feel connected to these characters on a television show, they would probably eventually want to do what their doing. Therefore, product placement became a huge part of this genre of television. Additionally, current issues and other topics would be covered in the show.

  • Abc Family Debuts the World Premiere of up and Coming Singing Sensation Zz Ward’S Track "Til the Casket Drops" in New “Pretty Little Liars” Music Video Exclusive
ABC FAMILY DEBUTS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF UP AND COMING SINGING SENSATION ZZ WARD’S TRACK "TIL THE CASKET DROPS" IN NEW “PRETTY LITTLE LIARS” MUSIC VIDEO EXCLUSIVE In anticipation of the upcoming season premiere of original hit series “Pretty Little Liars,” Tuesday, June 5th (8:00 – 9:00 PM ET/PT), ABC Family is debuting an “A” themed music video for “Til the Casket Drops,” the first song off the much anticipated new EP “Criminal” from rising star ZZ Ward. Fans can visit the Soundbooth on ABCFamily.com to see the video beginning today. The song is also available for download and streaming for free for 24 hours. ZZ recently made a splash with her free mixtape, Eleven Roses, on which she offers her interpretations of recent tracks by Freddie Gibbs, Childish Gambino and Tyler, the Creator. Her signature style, dubbed “dirty shine,” is a combination of the bone-deep wail of old-fashioned blues crossed with the big-city gloss of cutting-edge hip-hop. It instantly made an impression. Among the accolades: “2012‟s Artists to Watch… I don‟t know of any other blues singer bold enough to belt over the beat of Tyler the Creator‟s „Yonkers.‟” - Esquire.com “Whether her bluesy belting is accompanied by hip-hop beats or, as here, [“Last Love Song”] a gently plucked acoustic guitar, the palpable heartbreak in her voice will raise goose bumps down your spine.‟” - Marie Claire “The chanteuse‟s „dirty blues with beats‟ sound has gathered its fair share of buzz and she seems to have the poise and the chops to become a star.” - San Francisco Bay Guardian A tremendous array of artists are collaborating on ZZ‟s forthcoming album including: Ryan Tedder, Pete Rock, Theron “Neff-U” Feemster, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (of A Tribe Called Quest), Ludwig Goransson, Blended Babies and Fitz (of L.A.‟s Fitz and the Tantrums), while her four song EP, Criminal, is now available on iTunes.
