Exploring the Musical Traditions of Co. Leitrim & Co. Fermanagh
Exploring the Musical Traditions of County Leitrim & County Fermanagh In May 2020 Irish Arts Foundation launched a pioneering research programme. It centred on specific regional playing styles and influences within Irish traditional music originating from rural communities around the border counties of: Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland and Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Themes 1. Regional identity. 2. Local musical traditions in Co. Leitrim and Fermanagh. 3. The families and individuals who kept the music alive, and their legacy today. Regional Identity In the time of the horse and cart - the ‘candle to bed’ age - each village, town and county had its own tunes and dances; a musical accent and dialect. This was due to relative rural isolation. So despite the close proximity of Co. Leitrim and Fermanagh, distinct regional identities - musical, religious and political – formed. When talking about regional identity and style there will always be generalisations; tunes do not carry passports and music has never been constrained by borders. Despite this, we will look at what can be widely termed, a Leitrim and a Fermanagh musical tradition. County Leitrim Leitrim is in the province of Connacht and part of the Border Region. Its largest town is Carrick-on-Shannon with a population of 3,134. Although one of Ireland’s smallest counties, Leitrim has a distinct musical tradition of flute and fiddle music. We will look at some of the individuals and groups who have shaped the Leitrim style of traditional music. Leitrim Flute Music “Co. Leitrim has preserved a distinct musical identity and tradition based largely on the flute. -

Se trata de una época muy importante para Galicia y para Irlanda en el aspecto cultural, político y social. No se podría entender la actualidad de ambos países si no se tiene en cuenta ese crucial período. Palabras clave: cultura popular; gaélico; gallego; música; tradición Abstract This study takes a contrastive approach to the situation of Galician and Irish Gaelic in the first third of the twentieth century, and to traditional music in particular. It is a period of significant interest in both Galiza and Ireland in terms of the cultural, political and social climate. Indeed, the current situations of the two countries can hardly be understood without taking these crucial years into consideration. This article is written by a piper for pipers, in particular, those pipers who would like to extend their skills or knowledge by exploring the range of rhythm possibilities on the chanter. It is intended as a practical exercise. It assumes some level of experience with the formal system of music notation. To aid in this respect, future parts of the article will include sound clips. The introduction will give readers an insight into my approach to music and piping leading them, hopefully, to an understanding of where I believe the more specific information presented later fits into the larger context of Irish traditional dance music. Introduction. What is piping? What is piping ? I have been asking myself and others’ versions of this same question for some years now. The question, when put to others, elicited some strange responses typically ranging from instantly-induced catatonia to answers like “It is impossible to describe” from those who retained the faculty of speech! I think part of the problem was the version of the question I was using, along with a virtuoso- focused assumption of piping. We have all heard performances which may have been on the ‘acceptable’ rather than ‘inspirational’ end of the music spectrum (and yes, I know, the question “what is music?” opens up major areas of study which I will deal with briefly in the text), yet which caused us to say “There’s some nice piping there”. -

Many of those fans know that the song denounces sectarian violence by evoking the events of January 30, 1972. Some of those fans know that on that day 13 civil rights protestors were killed during a march held in Derry, Northern Ireland. Very few of those fans have actually been to Derry — or Ireland. U2 shows that Ireland is more than the home of Guinness — much more. It’s the home of Celtic traditions, astonishing scenery, unique landscapes, trag- ic history, political tribulations, folklore, Gaelic culture and a spirited people who create music and are captured through music. I didn’t know what a session was like, and I didn’t understand why tunes sounded painfully lame when I played them verbatim off the page. One lazy summer day, I Googled “Boston Irish session” and found out about the early session at the Green Briar in Brighton. After mustering up my courage, I showed up and sat there, ears open and flute in my lap, every week for months until the tunes started to sink in and I saw what other players did to breathe life into them.
