It might apply to the weight of your take on the blues, as with Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin. It might mean the originality of Jethro Tull or King Crimson. It might equally apply to an individual- to Eric Clapton, for example, The Beatles are the saints of the 1960s, and George Harrison an especially "heavy person". This year, heavy people flock together. Clapton and Steve Winwood join up in Blind Faith. Steve Marriott and Pete Frampton meet in Humble Pie. Crosby, Stills and Nash admit a new member, Neil Young. Supergroups, or more informal supersessions, serve as musical summit meetings for those who are reluctant to have theirwork tied down by the now antiquated notion of the "group". Trouble of one kind or another this year awaits the leading examples of this classic formation. Our cover stars The Rolling Stones this year part company with founder member Brian Jones. The Beatles, too, are changing - how, John Lennon wonders, can the group hope to contain three contributing writers? The Beatles diversification has become problematic.

  • Fingerstyle Guitar Solos
Fingerstyle Guitar Solos from the playing of DaveyGraham, Blind Blake, Stefan Grossman Bert Janschand John Renbourn using standardtuning transcribed by Peter Billam and some pieces by Peter Billam ©Peter J Billam, 2017 This score is offered under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence; see creativecommons.org This edition 7 September 2021. www.pjb.com.au Finger-style Folk-guitar Instrumentals These scores are something I always wished I had when I was fingerpicking steel-strung guitars in the the folk clubs of London in the late 1960s. Included are instrumentals for solo guitar, all in standard tuning, including a couple of my own, but mostly from the early albums of Davey Graham, Stefan Grossman, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Everyone trying to play the folk guitar must own those albums ! not to mention those by Al Stewart, John Martyn, RoyHarper,Dando Shaft, the Incredible String Band . it was a moment of great creative flowering. Theyplayed often with a Capo on second or third fret, and mostly in triplet-rhythm, which I have notated in 12/16 and 9/16 to makethe beats clearer by grouping them under the same beam. An ascii-tab tablature edition of these pieces is also available. Davey Graham was playing jazz standards - tune, chords and bass - just as a piano trio could. And not so much by brute virtuosity, asbyintelligence: by letting the arrangement growout from the guitar.Just consult Cry Me a River on youtube to see hownaturally the playing lies on Davey’s six strings. Blind Blake, star of Piedmont blues, recorded more than 100 sides in Chicago in 1927-1932, and was one of the great influences on Gary Davis.

  • Tell Tale Signs
I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really. You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them. There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing,… remember when that Napster guy came up across, it was like, ‘Everybody’s gettin’ music for free.’ I was like, ‘Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway. Bob Dylan 2006 A compilation of bits and Bobs from last 30 years? That'll be $129.99. Sony 2008 --- Introduction: I wrote this very soon after the release of Tell Tale Signs. Although I was presuming ISIS would be delayed in order to allow a more considered take on the release, my own work commitments demanded an early response in any case. I have presented it as a dialogue that highlights – if not exaggerates – trends I have felt in myself and in discussions amongst Dylan fans at large. I have taken the liberty of framing the dialogue in a setting plagiarised brazenly from a classic as Bob does with many an out of copyright source as Dylan Cynic would say or, if you are aligned to Dylan Enthusiast rather than Dylan Cynic, the framework of the dialogue alludes intriguingly to a past literary master in much the same way Dylan binds his own work artistically to Ovid in Modern Times. I won’t mention the play it comes from as the fun is surely always in the searching and then deciding if it is just rip-off or a deeply thought allusion that adds to the whole.

  • Eric Clapton

DAVE RAY: Dave "Snaker" Ray, whose ambition is to be a doctor, started playing guitar while a sophomore in high school. He origin ally began with blues (Leadbelly) to keep his fingers nimble fo r what he thought would be a classical-flamenco guitarist career. "After an adagio by Sor and a hacked-up Farruca, I began playing Led better's stuff exclusively, " Dave reports. He began playing the 12-string guitar when a senior in high school, and lists as early influences, Elvis' Sun label recordings, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, early Chicago, and, of course, Leadbelly. " I sing the blues because it's a medium not as demanding as literatu re or serious music, and free enough to permit a total statement of personality and. self, " Dave states. "I play blues because 1 feel it's important to me to express myself and because I feel it's a significant form of music which hasn't had enough dispersement. As far as white men playing blues, that's all who do play blues. the new Negroes are too busy (doing other things). " Discography: Blues, Rags and Hollers (Elektra EKL 240). Dave Ray may soon be heard, with John Koerner and Tony Glover, on Elektra EKL 267. ERIC VON SCHMIDT: E ric w rites: "B orn 1931; began singing in 1948; first influences were Leadbelly, Josh White and Jelly Roll Morton — then Library of Congress material and field recordings. Worked as magazine illustrator, then painter until 1952... two years in the army, and then to Florida, where I worked as a frame-maker and built a 27-foot ketch which was almost called the 'John Hurt'.
