Plant diversification in agrosystems is reported to enhance useful biodiversity and provide ecosystem services. Thus, agroforestry, which consists in co-planting trees and crops, is assumed to be a possible way to ensure regulation of pest outbreaks by phytoseiid mites. This paper investigates the effect of trees (Pinus pinea and Sorbus domestica) within vineyards on Phytoseiidae communities. Five experimental plots were considered, two where vines were co-planted with P. pinea and S. domestica, and three monoculture plots: vines, P. pinea and S. domestica. Sampling was carried out on vines and trees in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2010 and 2012. A higher Phytoseiidae diversity was observed in agroforestry plots than in monoculture plots. Kampimodromus aberrans (replacing T.[ T.] exhilaratus) seemed to colonize these plots 15 years after its plantation, especially when vines were co-planted with P. pinea. Factors affecting these faunistical changes are discussed. Effects on Phytoseiidae densities differed depending on grape cultivar- tree species associations. Factors affecting these interactions are discussed; plant diversity does not simply lead to a higher density and diversity of natural enemies. This concerns the pres- ence of both main kinds of dormancy (diapause and quiescence). The great importance in the seasonal control of life cycles in some parasitiform mites, like in acariform mites, belongs also for combinations of diapause with non-diapause arrests, particularly with the post-diapause quiescence (PDQ). This type of quiescence evoked after termination of diapause and enabling more accu- rate time-adjustment in recommencement of active development, is characteristic of both lineages of the Parasitiformes — Ixodida and Mesostigmata (particularly Gamasida). The available data show that in ixodid ticks the PDQ may be resulted similarly after developmental and behavioral diapause. Reproductive diapause combined with the PDQ is characteristic of some gamasid mites (particularly the family Phytoseiidae), while most gamasid and uropodid mites with phoretic dispersal reveal the dormant state (apparently of diapause nature) at the deutonymphal stage. The uncertainty between diapause and non-diapause dormancy is retained in some many cases (even in ixodid ticks and phytoseiid mites), and the necessity of further thorough study of different forms of diapause and non-diapause arrests in representatives of the Acari is noted therefore.

LEWIS USDA-ARS, 5230 KONNOWAC PASS Rd., WAPATO, WA, UNITED STATES 98951 ABSTRACT Densities and types of arthropods overwintering on common mullein, Verbascum thapsus L., in a fruit-growing region of Central Washington were determined. Over 45,000 arthropods were collected from 55 plants (5 plants from each of 11 sites), dominated numerically by Acari and Thysanoptera. Insects representing 8 orders and 29 families were identified, distributed both in the basal leaf rosettes and in the stalk material of the plants. One specialist insect herbivore of mullein, the mullein thrips, Haplothrips verbasci (Osborn), was abundant at all sites. Several pest and predatory taxa that commonly occur in orchards were also collected, suggesting that mullein may be a source of overwintered pests or predators moving into orchards in early spring. Pest taxa included primarily western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)), Lygus spp., and tetranychid spider mites. Common predators included phytoseiid mites and minute pirate bugs (Orius tristicolor (White)). Sites that were geographically close to one another were not more similar (in taxonomic composition of overwintering arthropods) than more distantly separated sites. The relative abun - dance of mites was compared across young healthy leaves, mature healthy leaves and mature leaves damaged by the citrus leafminer, Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton, on grapefruit in Florida and Texas. The spider mite Eotetranychus sex - maculatus (Riley) (Tetranychidae) was significantly more abundant on mined leaves in Florida, whereas in Texas tetranychids were found sporadically. Iphiseiodes quadripilis (Banks) (n= 139), Typhlodromalus peregrinus (Muma) (n= 122) and Euseius mesembrinus (Dean) (n= 18) were the most abundant phy - toseiids in Florida; E. mesembrinus was the dominant species in Texas [>90% of identified specimens (n=13)]. Although relatively high numbers of predaceous stigmaeid mites (Stigmaeidae) were found in some occasions in Florida, they had a patchy distribution, resulting in no significant differences between mined and unmined leaf types in most sampling dates.

Here we present the results of four experiments conducted in vineyards where the effects of chlorpyrifos, thiamethoxam, indoxacarb, flufenoxuron, and tebufenozide were evaluated on the generalist predatory mites Typhlodromus pyri Scheuten and Amblyseius andersoni (Chant), key biocontrol agents of herbivorous mites on grapevines. Results show that indoxacarb and tebufenozide had a low impact on the predatory mites considered here, while a significant impact was observed for chlorpyrifos, flufenoxuron, and thiamethoxam. The information obtained here should be considered in the design of IPM strategies on grapevine. Approaches followed different degrees of intervention: short-term practices (mowing regime and weed maintenance, cover crops), establishment of durable ecological infrastructures (perennial flower strips, hedgerows) and re-design of the crop system (intercropping, agroforestry). Although short-term practices did not always target the nutrition of natural enemies by flowering plants, living conditions for them (alternative prey, provision of habitat) were often improved. Perennial flower strips reliably enhanced natural enemies and techniques for their introduction continuously developed.

Introduction Predatory mites constitute a highly significant beneficial group on account of their vital role in the maintenance of pest population below the economic injury level. The species of Phytoseiidae are potentially important as a biotic factor in the control of phytophagous mites (Ewing 1914). Mass multiplication methods have been developed to use these predators in commercial scale on a variety of crops (Lo et al. 1979, Krishnamoorty 1982). Phytoseiidae contain 168 species under 12 genera (Gupta and Arun Gupta 1999). However, the reports on occurrence of new species are scanty from peninsular India. Hence a systematic survey was undertaken to unravel the occurrence of new species of Phytoseiidae from various districts of Kerala. The present new species was collected during this survey. The occurrence of phytoseiids in stored products is a very rare phenomenon, though isolated examples exists for the occurrence of members of Amblyseius and Neoseiulus in stored grains (Hughes 1976, Smiley 1984). Materials and Methods The predatory mite fauna harbouring on various stored commodities were collected by making extensive surveys in Kerala. Random samples of 100gms were collected in separate polythene bags and brought to the laboratory.
