Scopesi NATURAL HAZARDS IN LIGURIA Floods Forest fires In the recent past the Liguria Region has affected by natural hazards, especially floods, inundations and landslides, with extensive damages and dramatic loss of people. 2010 GENOVA 2011 2011 VERNAZZA 2011 2011 MONTEROSSO 2011 2011 FIUME MAGRA 2011 2014 GENOVA 2014 Also forest fires and earthquakes had in the past and have nowadays serious impacts on the Ligurian territory with heavy damages for economic activities and local people. To face arising difficulties and scenarios the Regional Civil Protection in Liguria has been strongly reorganized with new regional laws and rules. Regional Civil Protection in Liguria – a new operational unit Regional Civil Protection in Liguria - new procedures to alert Regional Civil Protection in Liguria Forest fires: 1.800 volunteers organized in 175 local groups 2 Provinces Genova Savona 10 Municipalities Arenzano Campo Ligure Cogoleto Genova Masone Rossiglione Sassello Stella Tiglieto Varazze Beigua regional nature Park Beigua Geopark 8.715 ha 39.230 ha Unfortunately also the costal area of Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark has been affected by floods, inundations and landslides with heavy damages caused by the weather. 2010 VARAZZE 2010 Unfortunately also the costal area of Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark has been affected by floods, inundations and landslides with heavy damages caused by the weather. 2014 ARENZANO 2016 • In order to carry out new strategies to increase public awareness and background about geohazards, during the last years Beigua UNESCO Global Geopark presented several activities directed towards local communities and schools. • Some actions have been developed in collaboration and with a strong support by the Liguria Regional Department of Civil Protection, the University of Genoa (Geological Department) and the CIMA Foundation, a scientific international centre on environment monitoring in Savona. INVOLVING AND TRAINING LOCAL VOLUNTEERS GROUPS VALLE STURA SASSELLO MELE ARENZANO VARAZZE INTER-REGIONAL DRILL Liguria – Piemonte - Lombardia 14 - 15 maggio 2016 • discussing about the existing territorial action plans (Civil Protection, Hydrogeological Basin, etc.) • sharing information about the communication channels of alerting and the possible expected sceneries • introducing the new EVANDE web platform for e-learning • planning a calendar of seminars and workshops just to implement their skills and to promote the EVANDE web platform for training courses • popularizing the self-protection rules to apply according to the various conditions due to the different kinds of hazard • spuring local community to create stronger and stronger links with Civil Protection services and volunteers • sensitizing local schools and community to the hazards by natural and anthropic factors; • The Liguria Regional Department of Civil Protection participated in local initiatives showing their proper rules, activities and equipments. • Several School Departments of the Beigua Geopark’s area have been involved. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Supporting educational activities «Le scatole di Zoe» promoted by the Municipality of Genoa and the local Civil Protection Group EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES • promoting a specific game about Geohazards and Civil Protection which has been created by the local students under the supervision of the Geopark’s educational staff and experts from the Liguria Region Civil Protection staff • this game is now travelling through all the Educational Centres of Liguria as a good practice to share at a regional level. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES Piano Protezione Civile Comunale del Comune di Mele Meetings and workshops have been organized in the Beigua Geopark’s Municipalities, explaining the local rules and organization to face emergency situations and hazard’s conditions. Also working by local TV network. • riconstructioning of the knowledge framework about natural hazards in Liguria Region and in the Beigua Geopark’s area • broadening the knowledge of the causes of geohazards (especially floods, inundations, landslides), the criticality and vulnerability of the territory • making aware local communities of the existence of available documents and know-how about civil protection role and actions on natural hazards self protection measures CONCLUSIONS The good results obtained during the project is considered only the first step of a continuous learning route the Beigua Geopark is going to consolidate at a local level, (also cementing the alliance with the Liguria Regional Department of Civil Protection, the local Municipalities, Volunteer Groups and School Departments) and with our EVANDE project’s partners..
