Junto a ellos, para Ruth Fuentes (cartografía), Pedro Paniagua (invertebrados), Patricia Barberá (botánica), Judith Muñoz (vertebrados y arácnidos), Pablo Galán (botánica), Sara Gayoso (médico, viróloga), Ana Belén Muñoz (enfermera) y el nutrido grupo de colaboradores que, por motivos político-burocráticos no pudieron realizar trabajo de campo, muchas gracias por la entusiasta participación en las expediciones. José Nguema y Pelagio Mangue, científicos guineoecuatorianos, colaboraron de modo activo en la preparación y logística local de ambas expediciones. Guías, porteadores, macheteros, cocineros, curanderos, etc., y así hasta más de medio centenar de habitantes de las aldeas cercanas a la Caldera, todos ellos de etnia Bubi, representados por Cirilo Riaco (jefe de guías y porteadores), Momo Siabú (jefe de macheteros) y Bernardo Siabú (cocinero), gracias por vuestro imprescindible esfuerzo. Óscar Rodríguez de Rivera, Isabel Angulo y Nacho Arizmendi prestaron desinteresadamente su colaboración en la preparación del material recolectado en ambas expediciones. Además, Nacho Arizmendi y Diana Martín, durante la intensa revisión de las colecciones del MNCN ayudaron en la preparación y etiquetado de ejemplares, así como a la elaboración de la base de datos. Este intenso trabajo fue posible gracias a las constantes facilidades que nos proporcionó Mercedes París y, junto a ella, Amparo Blay y Mercedes Hitado. Isla de Bioko (Guinea Ecuatorial). 153 RESUMEN El área de estudio se localiza en la Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Lubá, sur de la isla de Bioko y única muestra de bosque monzónico de Guinea Ecuatorial. El presente trabajo muestra la lista preliminar de los ropalóceros colectados en la Caldera de Lubá. De las 70 especies citadas, 14 son las primeras citas para Bioko (Graphium ucalegon ucalegon, Nepheronia argia argia, Pentila fidonioides, Cymothoe althea, Cymothoe capella, Cymothoe consanguis, Lachnoptera anticlia, Amauris vashti, Bicyclus golo, Bicyclus neustetteri, Coeliades forestan, Ceratrichia phocion camerona, Celaenorrhinus plagiatus and Semalea pulvina). Los resultados obtenidos tras aplicar diversos índices de diversidad (riqueza, dominancia, equidad) y funciones de acumulación, podemos inferir que los Rhopalocera de la Gran Caldera de Lubá constituyen una comunidad extraordinariamente diversa, de gran equidad, sin presencia de taxones amenazados a nivel general o restringido a Bioko y, a nivel general, muestra una estructura de alta estabilidad. Los resultados obtenidos pueden contribuir en futuras medidas de conservación, así como al asentamiento de la Reserva Científica como almacén de recursos genéticos. La vinculación histórica de España y sus zoólogos a Bioko es muy extensa y, por ello, la colección de ropalóceros depositada en el Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid (MNCN) alberga una enorme cantidad de ejemplares (alrededor de 2000). La revisión íntegra de esta colección, ha permitido la identificación de 172 especies (14 Papilionidae, 18 Lycaenidae, 29 Pieridae, 94 Nymphalidae, and 17 Hesperiidae), de las cuales 33 son nuevos registros para la isla de

Vasconcelos Abstract One new subspecies of Sevenia amulia (Cramer, 1777) (Nymphalidae, Biblidinae) is described from Príncipe Island and compared with the previously known subspecies. Two faunistic novelties are reported from São Tomé Island and for the country: one species of Lycaenidae (Polyommatinae), another of Nymphalidae (Heliconiinae). The presence on Príncipe Island of another species, an endemic Hesperiidae (Hesperiinae) not reported from the country for almost a century, is confirmed and commented. SHEPPARD Departments of Medicine and Zoology, University of Liverpool Received23.V.59 1.INTRODUCTION WHENBatesputforward the mimicry hypothesis which bears his name, Darwin (1872), although accepting it, had some difficulty in explaining the evolution of the mimetic resemblance of several distinct species to one distasteful model by a series of small changes, a require- ment of his general theory of evolution. He said "it is necessary to suppose in some cases that ancient members belonging to several distinct groups, before they had diverged to their present extent, accidentally resembled a member of another and protected group in a sufficient degree to afford some slight protection; this having given the basis for the subsequent acquisition of the most perfect resemb- lance ". Punnett (1915) realised that the difficulty is even more acute when one is dealing with a polymorphic species whose forms mimic very distantly related models. Knowing that, in those butterflies which had been investigated genetically, the forms differed by single allelomorphs he concluded that the mimicry did not evolve gradually and did not confer any advantage or disadvantage to the individual. He argued that an allelomorph arises at a single step by mutation and that therefore the mimicry also arises by chance at a single step. Goldschmidt (x) although not denying that mimicry confers some advantage to its possessors also maintained that the resemblance arises fully perfected by a single mutation of a gene distinct from that producing the colour pattern in the model, but producing a similar effect in the mimic.

    The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators.

The biological diversity on these islands is unknown and so a rapid assessment was conducted in January 2014 as part as a region wide assessment to determine the butterfly diversity on two of these islands, Biobio and Agbasiagba. Diversity indices were computed for both islands using the Shannon-Weiner index, Margalef’s index for richness and Whittaker’s index for comparison of diversity between the two islands. A total of eight hundred and eighty-one (881) individual butterflies representing forty-five (45) species belonging to eight (8) families were recorded during the study. Thirty-nine (39) species of butterflies were recorded on Biobio island whiles twenty-eight (28) species were recorded on Agbasiagba. This was expected as the larger islands are expected to support more species than smaller ones, with Biobio island being relatively bigger than Agbasiagba. The shared species of butterflies on both islands were twenty-two (22) representing 48.9% of the total species accumulated. Indicator species like Junonia oenone, Danaus chrysippus and Papilio demodocus were also recorded indicating the degraded floral quality of the Islands.

KIELLAND Oslo, Norway ABSTRACT. — Three new species of Tanzanian Rhopalocera are described: Baliochila pseudofragilis sp. n., Castalius stempfferi sp. n. (both Lycaenidae) and Coenyropsis carcassoni sp. n. (Satyridae). Acraea vuilloti Mabille (Acraeidae) is considered to be a distinct species. INTRODUCTION In the following lines three new species of butterflies will be described, and some attention will be given to a fourth species. The material originates largely from Tanzania. Most of it is collected by myself, but some specimens have been taken by Dr. R. H. Carcasson and Dr. A. H. B. Rydon. Baliochila pseudofragilis sp. n. (Lycaenidae), figs. 1—7 Extremely alike Baliochilafragilis Stempffer & Bennet, 1953. Male: Upper side fore wing orange yellow with dark, brown markings; costal border extending from base to about 2A of winglength, with two orange dots between costa and margin, one near distal end of cell and one beyond; the bar at the distal end of the dark costal margin is slightly less extended than in fragilis; there is only a trace of a fuscous bar at the discocellular; there are some fuscous scales invading the basal part of the cell; this is not normal in fragilis\ apex broadly dark-brown and tapering towards tornus; there is a notch of the ground colour cutting into the dark border in the middle of space 3; this is present in all the specimens before Fig. 1—4.     Biosearch Nyika: Malawi 2004 Edited by Marianne J Overton FOREWORD Peter Overton It is ten years since the Biosearch Nyika project was first mooted and agreement with the Director of National Parks and Wildlife obtained for our exploration of the remoter parts of the Nyika National Park. Over this period the teams have focused mainly on the northern part of the park where patrolling has been very limited and our gathering of intelligence has been most helpful to the Nyika management. In 2004 we undertook the most challenging expedition to date, launched from the extreme north of the park at Uledi, a four-hour drive from Thazima. The team‟s first challenge was to cross the unbridged North Rukuru River with all their supplies. They then had to climb up the western escarpment of the Mpanda ridge to a point on the Mpero River, where they set up a Base Camp, from which to launch out on their surveys. The greatest achievement was to climb both Mpanda and Kawozya and discover the remote Bleak House, now derelict but offering stunning views over Lake Malawi and far beyond. At this point they could certainly claim to be in remote country since this old site is much talked about but very rarely seen by visitors. We have yet to have clear information about who built it, when and why. Perhaps it was a holiday „retreat‟ for Livingstonia or a staging post for missionaries who conducted business on the west of the Nyika National Park and into Zambia. In many ways this expedition was the pinnacle of logistical achievement.
