General Characteristics of the District Begusarai is one of the thirty-eight districts in the state of Bihar. The district lies on the northen bank of the Ganga river. As an old saying ,the name of the district apparently comes from “Begum”(queen) and “Sarai” (inn). The Begum of Bhagalpur used to visit “ Simaria Ghat” ( holy place on the banks of the Ganges ) for a month of pilgrimage , which later took to the slang of Begusarai. Begusarai was established in 1870 as a subdivision of Munger District. In 1972, it was given district status . Page 3 of 25 BEGUSARAI- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY 1.1 Location & Geographical Area. Begusarai district occupies an area of 1918 square kilometer . The district lies on the northen bank of river Ganges . The Begusarai district is a part of Darbhanga division. It is located at latitudes 25 degree 15 minute NORTH to 25 degree 45 minute NORTH and longitude 85 degree 45 minute EAST to 86 degree 36 minute EAST.It is bounded on thenorth by Samastipur , on the south by the Ganga and the lakhisarai district, on the east by Khagaria and Munger and on the west by Samastipur and Patna district.Begusarai is the part of Darbhanga Division. • Page 4 of 25 BEGUSARAI- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY 1.2 Topography District Begusarai lies in the middle part of the NORTH GANGA PLAIN. In general, it is low flying fvflat terrain (MSL 45m-32m) having a southerly to southeasterly slope . This factor governs the flow of streams. Geomorphologically it is a part of the Gandak-Kosi inerfluve. The southern part of the district ,except those of low lying flood plains of Ganga, appears to be elevated landmass when Page 5 of 25 BEGUSARAI- DISTRICT INDUSTRIAL POTENTIAL SURVEY compared to the adjoining district of Khagaria and Samastipur. Hence, being a safer destination amidst the flood Drained region , it support the human activity in a better way.The district is drained by number of rivers viz. Ganga , Burhi Gandak, Bagmati and Balan rivers and in addition , small rivulets , dhars ,nalas which are originated locally and preserve rain water, mark the landscape. • District Profile Jamui Introduction
DISTRICT PROFILE JAMUI INTRODUCTION Jamui district is one of the thirty-eight administrative districts of Bihar. The district was formed on 21 February 1991, when it was separated from Munger district. Jamui district is a part of Munger Commissionery. Jamui district is surrounded by the districts of Munger, Nawada, Banka and Lakhisarai and districts Giridih and Deoghar of Jharkhand state. The major rivers flowing in the district are Kiul, Burnar, Sukhnar, Nagi, Nakti, Ulai, Anjan, Ajay and Bunbuni HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Jamui has a glorious history. Historical existence of Jamui has been observed during the Mahabharta period. Jamui was earlier known as Jambhiyaagram. The old name of Jamui has been traced as Jambhubani in a copper plate kept in Patna Musuem. According to Jainism, the 24th Tirthankar Lord Mahavir got divine knowledge in Jambhiyagram/ Jrimbhikgram situated on the bank of river Jambhiyagram Ujjhuvaliya/ Rijuvalika. Hindi translation of the words Jambhiya and Jrimbhikgram is Jamuhi which developed in the recent time as Jamui and the river Ujhuvaliya/ Rijuvalika changed to river Ulai . Jamui was ruled by the Gupta, Pala and Chandel rulers. Indpai is supposed to be the capital of Indradyumna, the last local king of Pala dynasty during the 12th century. It was earlier known as Indraprastha. Many archaeological evidences have been found at this place. Gidhaur, also known as Patsanda, is a small town in Jamui district. It was one of the 568 Princely States in India before the partition of British India in 1947. Kings of Chandel descent belonging to Mahoba of Bundelkhand region, ruled here for more than six centuries.
