Lyndall red.nds ire its very handy to the Dickson Hotel. .4 S * February, 1983 2 It Kosiusko National Park Despite the pressures on the NPWS/XNP fran without, the service have managed anongst other things to: - provide ranger guided tLks at Kiandra - temporarily reopen Yarrangobilly Caves - station a seasonal rancer at Coolamine Caves/Bluewater Holes. Grazing Pressure to reopen Kossi is gaining support fran areas renoved from the park and the NPWS neal your support to ensure that grazing in the KNP in fact stops. To date there has been grazing every year since it was officially stopped. One person found in the park recently with 1200 head of sheep had no property at all - he cot than cheaply and was using public land to make noney. The incidence of do; problems along the park boundaries is in proportion to the activities of the NWTS stock patrol - no patrol - no dogs! S Tunnel t. The proposed tunnel linking the Thredto Valley to Per isher has expanded from a $50 million tunnel to a $280 million coirplex including an internaltional class hotel, restaurants and shops, carpark for 7000 cars and 300 bises. It is now proposed to expand it to Blue Cow later to provide "spectacular sumter and winter access. Needless to say it is intended to alienate an area as large as the Thredto lease from the park near the junction of the Thredin and Little Thredto Rivers. Huts Rawsons hut has been rerrc.eJ by the NPWS. Constances hut was accidently destroyed by fire on 11th January. Pigs Pigs are causing significant damage in both the ACT and NSW and are likely to Lecare %crse. Eradication/ratoval must be on a regular basis to have any effect. In the Moree Pastures Protection district 400,000 were killed in four years. After killLn an estimated 70% of the population in the Macquarie Marshes, the NPWS were still able to destroy 1500 pigs in 18 hours helicopter flying. Pigs rrcved into the £1t Kcsciusko region in 1982 and are now noving down the Cascade Ridge (1983). They were not present there bof re. Baiting Dying 1080 baits green aears to reduce loses for non-target species when used for dogs. The use cf Metodcpramide with 1080 reduses poisoning of non-target species by their eating vartitus of poisoned species (e.g. pigs). It effectively increases efficiency. 1080 is the test of a bad Lunch - animals do suffer. Feral Cats A problem in all our parks and countryside. An interesting caiparision is:. made from recent service reports. Vic: feral cats are no different from dcnestic, i.e. sane size & weight WA: feral cats are ge-erally heavier, larger, tatby or ginger. Largest reported 112 an in body length, 50 an at shoulder. Probably larger spec inens but they s.ould be too large for the traps used! Craig Allen 1983 3 It "This is the sort of trip that the Club does test, really" The quote is from Hick. The trip is Rene Lays' Currawong Falls trip on 15-16 January. The official map for the trip, set by Bob, was Cobargo 1:100,000 But at IT collation on the Tuesday before, Rene couldn't find Currawong Falls on the Cobargo map. "There's another Currawong Falls down on the Snowy" scnelxdy suggested. "No, it's not that one, it's off the escarpnent" - Rene. On Friday the official map was changed to Numbla 1:100,000. "Never heard of it" - Pat. "It's near Jacobs River. We go via Delegate" - Rene. "That's near the Victorian lnrder" - Pat. "No, it's near Coana" - Ann. On Saturday we drove to Dalgety instead. That's south from Berridale. Feeling that we were now zeroing in fast on these Falls, nine of us ronped out along the ridge to Mt Wobbyong, intending to drop left (east) of f • the sunnit into Matong Creek and do a loop trip down the Snowy, past the Falls and back up a west ridge on Sunday. Once Philip was safely on ahead • and out of earshot, we sarehow veered right of f the ridge and kept on veering • right, dropping down through the typical pleasant open vco3land and cypress pines of the Snowy region. We cane out on a snelly muddy Snowy River, well downstream even of our intended exit point, in time for lunch. Recent flcois have turned the Snowy into a less than delightful area to visit. The water was nudy and undrinkable, the rotting flooi debris stank foully and the river bank was knee-deep black glutinous gaseous ooze covered with a veneer of golden firm-looking sand. Slowly we trudged upstream to the falls, which were dry, with a few muddy swims along the way. A family of black swans isproved the environrrent visually and entertained us. ALove the cascades the river was sonewhat better and we found reasonable drinking water in small rock pools. We dided that the test way to find Philip was to stay put and haul him in when he cane past. So we caiçed, drank tea, read tcoks, swam a little and worried a lot. And at 6 pn he duly cane tearing downriver searching for us. He did pretty well for a guy working of f the Cobargo map. Sunday n-orning we looked around the cascades-falls area, even extending ourselves to exploring the creek alxne Currawong Falls. It would be a pleasant spot to visit in a more normal season. A new-found passion to have pretty rocks for doorstops sent Rene and ne searching for round orange-speckled rocks, which we then loaded into our packs for the long haul up the hill. We had an after-lurch snooze, then the desire for a milkshake drove us to get our act tether and the navigation back to the cars was exsriplory. Yes, it was the sort of trip that the Club does test - a happy easy- going trip with good ccrpany. Pat Miethke .4 February, 1983 4 ,., It Chrisbnas at Ettrena Party: Mick Crofts, Brian Palm, Rod Peters, Reet Vallak Sat, Dec 25: Into Ettrema Ck from Quiera Clearing via Transportation Spur. This is a fast way in, taking airut 3 tours. Keep to the left towards the bDttan of the spur and drop into the side creek. Lunch. We then walked for two and a half hours downstream to the Tullyangela Cc junction where we camped for the first night. Ettrena was very dry with only a few shallow pools, so we made very rapid - - progress. The only pxl fit for swinning was at the campsite. Light drizzle set in during the evening and continued overnight with some heavy spells. Sun, Dec 26: Steady to heavy drizzle continued in the nvrning and we sat around trying to decide whether to do side trips based at Thllyangela rather than th go to Bundundah Cc.
