Kicking Off with Comedy Central's Roast of Rob Lowe
Media Release: Tuesday August 23, 2016 Get ready for a feast of Roasts on Foxtel Kicking off with Comedy Central’s Roast of Rob Lowe Tuesday September 6 at 8.30pm Express from the US on The Comedy Channel Hollywood heartthrob Rob Lowe is treated with his very own special Roast – and considering the skeletons in Lowe's closet, which include struggles with alcohol and an affair with Princess Stephanie of Monaco – the Roasters should have no problem finding topics to poke fun at. Comedy Central’s Roast of Rob Lowe will premiere Tuesday September 6 at 8.30pm Express from the US on The Comedy Channel. Known for his roles in St Elmo’s Fire, Wayne’s World, the Austin Powers franchise, The West Wing, Brothers & Sisters, Parks & Recreation, The Grinder and many, many more – Lowe has been a handsome fixture of our small and silver screens since the early 1980s. Get ready for Lowe’s dirty laundry to be aired when the Roasters spill the beans on his movie star lifestyle and brat pack antics. Comedy Central’s Roast of Rob Lowe will assemble a dais of comedians and celebrities, along with Roast Master David Spade (Saturday Night Live, Joe Dirt, Just Shoot Me!, Rules of Engagement), to take down the ageless sex symbol one burn at a time. The first round of Roasters confirmed include one of the UK's most distinctive comedians Jimmy Carr, Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson, actress and Lowe’s co- star Bo Derek, former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, comedic actor Rob Riggle, and Roast alumni Jeff Ross. -

How safe are they for pupils, let alone for teachers and other school staff? Are mums and dads putting themselves at risk by congregating around the school gate? Will asymptomatic youngsters spread the virus? And so on. In truth, however, most of us now realise that the only thing that would have been worse than re-opening schools, would have been to have kept them, mostly, closed. Many schools have worked heroically to provide online teaching. Millions of young people, though, have been missing out. Children from under-privileged backgrounds have suffered most of all. Parents with limited literacy or numeracy skills, themselves, are least able to support their offspring. The gulf between society’s ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’ has been widening. Is it going to be possible for pupils, of whatever background, to catch up what they have missed this year in terms of schooling? Pupils preparing for next year’s GCSE and A-Levels are most affected and their parents are justifiably concerned. -

The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21St Century Stand-Up

Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Dr. Katie Batza Dr. Henry Bial Dr. Sherrie Tucker Dr. Peter Zazzali Date Defended: August 23, 2018 ii The dissertation committee for Rachel E. Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness. -
