Abstract The term globalization is too often defined by the results it produces, both positive and negative, as opposed to being defined as a socially engineered device naturally occurring as civilization progressed. It is a mechanism to manage the affairs of human beings as they provided for their mutual, but not always equal, attainment of satisfaction. It is therefore a universal instrument that emerged out of the ordered exchange process and is to be found in all cultures. Its growth and maturity were fueled by com- mon denominators of value that are shared across and between social groups around the world and act as a trade agent, bridging and bonding alien territories. As such it began in ancient times and continues into the present, where its prevalence has resulted in a more borderless world with increasing interdependence of nations. The historic commercial activities used in the past form the platform of principles still evident in its modern-day structure. They also lacked an appreciation of the impact of the commercial imperative on the development of civilization. As most of them were born in the era of modern globalization, with product choices and common brand names for everyday goods coming from a broad spectrum of foreign sources, the assumption that the world marketplace was created in their time was a commonly held conviction. The notion that globalization is a recent occurrence with a decidedly prejudicial depiction as a United States, no less European-inspired event, permeates the presentations of many educators, books and articles, authors, and the public. The idea that such a system evolved over time and that today’s business management principles were birthed in antiquity were concepts my students never considered. I decided that I would open every class with a presentation on the roots of globalization, the emergence of the exchange imperative, and trade as a prime initiator propelling and contributing to societal growth and development. All cultures through- out history at one time or another engaged in cross border trade—what we today call globalization. It is an economic system with overtones of social and political ramifications that links all of us together. Many years later my continuously updated lecture notes for such sessions, coupled with a private research fascination on the contribution of the commercial imperative to civilization, have resulted in this book. Beyond the impetus provided by my students to investigate the subject matter, I remembered vividly my global executive experiences when an understanding of the history of global commerce would have well served my world manage- rial responsibilities if only such an introduction was given to me during my academic years.     Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks.

One could say, in a rather schematic way, that after the image of a China of Marvels introduced by the medieval travellers, there came the China of Enlightment praised by the Jesuits and 18th century French philosophers, followed at the time of European expansionism and "break down of China", by China of exotics, still much in favour to this day. It may look a paradox that among these three approaches, only the earlier one has been fair enough to China, which for several centuries, especially under the Song and Yuan dynasties, was truly much advanced in most fields, compared to Western countries. It is from the Opium War onwards that the prejudices against China have been the strongest, just at the time when travels being easier to undertake, scholars had found a renewed interest in the study of faraway countries and undertaken new research on the manuscripts left by the numerous medieval travellers who had gone to China.

    Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

    RUSSIA COUNTRY REPORT: MULTICULTURAL EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION Leila Salekhova, Ksenia Grigorieva Kazan Federal University (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) Abstract The Russian Federation (RF) is a large country with the total area of 17,075,400 sq km. The RF has the world’s ninth-largest population of 146,600,000 people. According to the 2010 census, ethnic Russian people constitute up to 81% of the total population. In total, over 185 different ethnic groups live within the RF borders. Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism are Russia’s traditional religions. Russia is a multinational and multicultural state. The large number of different ethnic groups represents the result of a complicated history of migrations, wars and revolutions. The ethnic diversity of Russia has significantly influenced the nature of its development and has had a strong influence on the state education policy. The article gives a detailed analysis of the key factors determining educational opportunities for different RF ethnic groups. A complicated ethnic composition of Russia’s population and its multi-confessional nature cause the educational system to fulfill educational, ethno-cultural and consolidating functions by enriching the educational content with ethnic peculiarities and at the same time providing students with an opportunity to study both in native (non-Russian) and non-native (Russian) languages. The paper provides clear and thorough description of Russian educational system emphasizing positive features like high literacy and educational rates especially in technical areas that are due to the results of the educational system functioning nowadays. Teacher education is provided in different types of educational institutions allowing their graduates to start working as teachers immediately after graduating.

Most of this supplement will focus on the Aztec conquest, but I include some information on the other New World empires as well. Most (if not all) of the terms used to describe the weapons, armor, geographic places, and culture of these New World empires definitely do not roll off the tongue, but I will attempt to help as much as possible. The Spanish certainly had many technological advantages over their New World opponents, such as gunpowder and crossbows; however, these were not the decisive advantages. The Conquistadores were mercenary veterans of years of warfare in Italy and elsewhere. Conquistadores were known for their excellent swordsmanship. Also, one must add that skill with blades (and armor) of Toledo steel to the shock and awe of the horse and war hounds when looking at how the Conquistadores brought down their foes. 1 For victory, the combat experience of the Conquistadores alone was necessary but not sufficient.
