The - triumph of Love over Death: Orpheus, son of the muse Calliope, was 19.00 devastated by the death of his wife Eurudice. With his weeping lyre he achieved to move the king and queen of the dead, Hades and Persephone, and won himself a chance to claim the blossom of his heart back from the Kingdom of Silence. To do so, he had to cross the Acheron River, the watery border between Life and Death. River Acherontas passes through wonderful gorges, Day 6 proud and audacious precipices, endless landscapes of peace and handsomeness, and it forms some lakes here and there; and all that under the surveillance of age-old plane trees. And, of course, the habitat of such a unique place is a member of the Natura 2000 network. At a certain point the river narrows between green-clad steep high cliffs that seem to be forming an enormous gate through which the water of the river rushes fiercely; Here is the legendary “The Gate to the Underworld”. The travelers will visit the oracle of death "Nekromanteion" an ancient Greek temple of necromancy devoted to Hades and Persephone. According to tradition, it was located on the banks of the Acheron river, near the ancient city of Ephyra. This site was believed by devotees to be the door to Hades, the realm of the dead. The travelers will enjoy fascinating experiences.... Drive to the ancient town of Nikopolis (Preveza) to see where the Battle of Actium took place. The group arrives to Lefkada in the afternoon. 19.00 - Free time for dinner or relaxation and leisure or study 22.00 07.00Gr - Gr Greek Traditional Breakfast 09.00 09.00 Lesson 19 : Greek language course (Reading) (Theory - video - audio) - Lesson 20 : Greek language course (Writing) (Theory - video - audio) Day 7 15.00 Lesson 21 : Utterance - Common expressions - cultural communication codes - social and cultural habits - Greek language games 15.00 - Students will enjoy the sea and sun of Lefkada - Study - Free time 18.00 18.00 Lesson 22 : Greek language course (Reading) (Theory - video - audio) - Lesson 23 : Greek language course (Writing) (Theory - video - audio) 20.00 20.00 Dinner and Greek night out! Relocation of seismicity and preliminary inversion of geodetic data suggests the fault plane dips to east with an angle of about 70±5 degrees. The earthquake caused a lot of structural damage to the villages of Agios Petros, Athani, Dragano and Komilio. Environmental effects include liquefaction, extensive rock falls and landslides. No surface ruptures were found in the field. Road cracks are interpreted as secondary phenomena of gravitational nature induced by ground shaking. Preliminary inversion of geodetic data suggests that the upper part of the fault is offshore very close to the coast, and at very shallow depth (0.5±0.5 km), as constrained by the azimuth and amplitude of the motion at NOA GPS stations PONT (36 cm offset to the south) and SPAN.

  • The West Coast of Greece and the Ionian Sea
“He likes to enjoy the sea from up here. How much wider it is, that much more it steals the heart. So much that your mind chokes.” Aristotelis Valaoritis Welcome to the west coast of Greece and the Ionian sea Crystal clear waters and pure natural beauty are the symbols of the Ionian Sea. The sea was named after Io who, according to Greek mythology, was a priestess of the goddess Hera. Io had an affair with Zeus, king of the gods, and Hera’s husband. When Hera learned of the affair she transformed Io into a cow. Io fled around Europe trying to escape Hera’s wrath. Finally, Io plunged into the sea, which was named Ionian, after her. MAP OF EUROPE MAP OF PALEROS MUNICIPALITY MAP OF GREECE Welcome to Paleros Paleros, a picturesque town located on the west coast of mainland Greece, is evocatively situated in a breathtaking backdrop of beautiful and serene vistas and the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Olive trees, vineyards and pine trees extend down to the spectacular sandy beaches. Beachfront bars, restaurants and cafes are within walking distance. Ancient Paleros is a place of unrivalled beauty and grace, situated high in the mountains overlooking the Ionian sea and Vourkaria lake. The city had a population of over 10,000 people and was the location of one of the most important battles of antiquity. At nearby Aktio, Antony and Cleopatra were defeated in a sea battle by Octavius, who built the city of Nikopolis to commemorate his victory and moved the population of Paleros to his new city in 31 B.C.

Dep., Milan, Italy; 3Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens, 11810 Athens, Greece; 4Laboratory of Concrete Structures, National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece ABSTRACT This work describes the outcome of two field surveys in Lefkada Island, after the 17.11.2015 earthquake of Mw6.4 at its southwestern peninsula. Geo-environmental effects were observed throughout the western flanks of the mountain massif, parallel to the activated fault. Structural damage was mainly observed in the epicentral area where macroseismic intensity was assessed as VIII, based on registered damage and assumed vulnerability per building typology. Both modern and traditional buildings exhibited notable seismic performance. The distribution of the damage per building category present in the affected area is presented, based on site surveys and post-seismic usability characterization by the local Earthquake Rehabilitation Organization. The survey highlights the frequent presence of the so-called “pontelo” dual system at both ground floor and two-story stone masonry buildings at the western mountain villages. This structural type, unique within the Greek territory, revealed

Along with Evia, these are the only Greek islands that visitors do not need ferry to go, as they are easily accessible by road. The mountainous island of Lefkada is mainly covered with dense and verdant vegetation. This vegetation surrounds lovely waterfalls, traditional villages and many paths to hike. Nine satellite islands surround Lefkada, including the beautiful islands of Meganisi, Kalamos, Kastos, Madouri and Skorpios. Among these, Skorpios is the most famous as it was the private island of the Greek ship owner Aristotelis Onassis. Some of the most famous people ever have stepped foot on this lovely island, including Maria Callas and Jackie Kennedy.
