The Hamburg International Short Film Festival is not only one of the oldest festivals of its kind, but also one of the most distinctive: The festival screens the most exciting contemporary experimen- tal, documentary, animated and narrative short film productions from all over the world. Many of these films will move on to galleries, museums or other festivals, and some will even make the leap over the Atlantic Ocean. The international competitions juxtapose and contrast different short films with an eye for aesthetic interconnections and thematic trends. This year’s special programmes focus on the ›loop‹, which can mean a lot of things but at its core stands for irritations in a closed circuit. The festi- val moves into the ›Disco‹: a glittering place of longing and a pleasurable zone of freedom. This year’s national focus throws a spotlight on China. In spite of difficult production conditions, it is the home of a very lively video and film art scene which is filming tenaciously against pushbacks and censorship. All in all, Hamburg has every reason to be proud of this range of works from the world of film art and film politics. Let’s keep our eyes open and take a look!

The most refreshing element of McKenna’s film is the complexity of his characters, more specifically Marie Brassard who was amazing as Jeannette. This middle-aged woman was given more power and freedom to explore all types of relationships within the film, unlike films where we would normally see a woman of this age for a blink of a second. McKenna’s choice of casting such a strong lead pays off with depth to the plot and this film will not disappoint. His short films screened at the Berlinale Shorts Competition for three consecutive years. In 2012 Radwanski directed his first feature film Tower which had its world premiere at the 65th Locarno International Film Festival. The film went on to screen at many festivals including The Toronto International Film Festival, The Viennale, and New Directors/ New Films presented by MoMA. Most recently his second feature How Heavy This Hammer had its international premiere at The 66th Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the $100,000 prize for Best Canadian film of the Year by the Toronto Film Critics Association. Kazik Radwanski has availed himself of considerable success, having become a recent fixture of the Toronto International Film Festival, a favorite of domestic awards bodies, and a mainstay of local critics' year-end lists. His last feature, the uproarious loser-comedy Tower, premiered in New York as part of MoMA's New Directors New Films festival in 2013 but never found distribution; his latest, How Heavy This Hammer, may be fated to remain in the same limbo.

  • Meiermovies Short Films by Star Rating
MeierMovies Short Films by Star Rating Theatrically released motion pictures of 40 minutes or less For every great feature, there’s a great short, and this list attempts to chronicle just some of those tiny masterpieces – and their not-so-masterful counterparts. For films to make this list, they must have played in at least one film festival or showcase, or theatrical venue, for a paying audience. Films shown only on television (or available only on DVD, Blu-ray, video or online) are reserved for my Television list. Also not included here are student films and similar projects that have never been presented at a theatrical venue that charged admission to viewers. (Please note that this is slightly more lenient than the qualifications for the feature- film lists, which require that a film of more than 40 minutes play at least two major festivals, or have a limited or general release.) Theatrical newsreels (pre-television) and theatrically released trailers are not eligible for this list, although mini-documentaries and travelogues (typically playing alongside trailers and B-features in the 1930-1950s) are. Short films shown at theme parks and museums are eligible, but not if they rely on animatronic/interactive/live elements. Shorts produced for timed competitions, such as 48-hour or 24-hour projects, are not included here, unless those films were subsequently screened at a second venue. The ratings system is the same as that of the feature-film list, just with no half or quarter stars. That difference is due to simplification and also to the fact that it’s admittedly difficult, and perhaps somewhat unfair, to compare a 2-minute film to a 40- minute one using quarter stars.

PRESS INFORMATION 2 ANIMA 2020 The team at Anima, the Brussels International Animation Film Festival, is delighted to announce the programme for the 39th Festival. Once again this year, we will be taking up residence at Flagey from 21st February to 1st March. We will also be present at the Palace cinema where we will be screening some of the most emblematic features for kids as part of our focus programme. And we will be beaming across the whole of the country by decentralizing some of the programmes or feature films in different cinemas in Wallonia and Flanders. Anima is the festival for all audiences. Families can discover what's new this year, with 5 features and 20 little gems in competition, along with some of the best reruns. In the evenings, talented animators will be on display in the 7 competition programmes, Best of Shorts and the 3 It's Belgian programmes.
