August 2010 INDIGENOUS AND EXOTIC: ARCHAEOZOOLOGY OF THE TE HOE SHORE WHALING STATION, I > NEW ZEALAND Tiffany James-Lee I: I ·1 ·/ A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts in Anthropology at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand \ '> \ Date: 30 June 2006 ,> Abstract Faunal analysis has long been a strength in the archaeology of prehistoric New Zealand, though its use in the interpretations of historic sites has been relatively recent. This thesis presents the results and interpretations of faunal analyses conducted on three early-mid, late prehistoric, and historic faunal assemblages from Te Hoe, the site of a nineteenth century shore whaling station on the North Island East Coast. Historic sources from the mid-nineteenth century are used to describe the shore whaling industry and lifestyle of whaling communities. Taxa utilised, habitats exploited, indigenous/exotic species focus and butchery unit analysis are used to provide a picture of resource use and dietary consumption at Te Hoe. These results are then compared between the three assemblages to examine temporal changes in the diet of the occupants at Te Hoe during these three periods. The historic faunal assemblage from Te Hoe is then compared with faunal assemblages from four other nineteenth century shore whaling station sites in New Zealand and Australia. This intersite comparison places the results from Te Hoe in temporal and spatial contexts. Finally, with the aid of historic resources, the emergence of the unique cultural identity of New Zealanders of European ancestry - Pakeha - is evidenced in the period of nineteenth century shore whalers, such as those that live at Te ) Hoe. ) /- iii Acknowledgements A big thank you is due to my supervisor, Ian Smith, for taking me on after four years away from anthropology. Traditional Knowledge Systems and Crops: Case Studies on the Introduction of Kūmara (Ipomoea batatas) and Taewa Māori (Solanum tuberosum) to Aotearoa/New Zealand A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of AgriScience in Horticultural Science at Massey University, Manawatū, New Zealand Rodrigo Estrada de la Cerda 2015 Kūmara and Taewa Māori, Ōhakea, New Zealand i Abstract Kūmara (Ipomoea batatas) and taewa Māori, or Māori potato (Solanum tuberosum), are arguably the most important Māori traditional crops. Over many centuries, Māori have developed a very intimate relationship to kūmara, and later with taewa, in order to ensure the survival of their people. There are extensive examples of traditional knowledge aligned to kūmara and taewa that strengthen the relationship to the people and acknowledge that relationship as central to the human and crop dispersal from different locations, eventually to Aotearoa / New Zealand. This project looked at the diverse knowledge systems that exist relative to the relationship of Māori to these two food crops; kūmara and taewa. A mixed methodology was applied and information gained from diverse sources including scientific publications, literature in Spanish and English, and Andean, Pacific and Māori traditional knowledge. The evidence on the introduction of kūmara to Aotearoa/New Zealand by Māori is indisputable. Mātauranga Māori confirms the association of kūmara as important cargo for the tribes involved, even detailing the purpose for some of the voyages.

The film follows the progress of the annual Cook Strait Whale Project, a New Zealand-based citizen science project for conservation biology. The written thesis explores the origins, popularity and success of the contemporary citizen science movement, and its role in conservation biology and informal science education. It also explores the physical and mental health benefits of participation (a key component of the citizen science movement), and the potential for citizen science to inspire hope in times of ecological crisis. The new fields of hopeful tourism and positive psychology in tourism are then explored for their parallels with citizen science, with discussion of how the movements might be merged to create citizen science tourism experiences. A survey of local travellers and international tourists to New Zealand provides a complementary empirical investigation, assessing current interest and thus practical potential for citizen-science based tourism.     terra australis 30 Terra Australis reports the results of archaeological and related research within the south and east of Asia, though mainly Australia, New Guinea and island Melanesia — lands that remained terra australis incognita to generations of prehistorians. Its subject is the settlement of the diverse environments in this isolated quarter of the globe by peoples who have maintained their discrete and traditional ways of life into the recent recorded or remembered past and at times into the observable present. Since the beginning of the series, the basic colour on the spine and cover has distinguished the regional distribution of topics as follows: ochre for Australia, green for New Guinea, red for South-East Asia and blue for the Pacific Islands. From 2001, issues with a gold spine will include conference proceedings, edited papers and monographs which in topic or desired format do not fit easily within the original arrangements.
